A couple of years ago, it really looked like Komakino might break through. Appearances on an NME backed tour, tour support for Bloc Party and a hyped single released on Drowned In Sound Recordings were promising signs. Sadly, it didn't quite work out. But there could yet be a happy ending. After Komakino split, some of the existing members went onto form You Animals . While Komakino were clearly influenced by post-punk (the name was derived from a Joy Division track), they weren't afraid of pop as the brilliant single 'Say Something Else' [...]
April. I hate April. I've detailed my reasons why before, I'm not getting into those past pains again. I will tell you though that so far this month I've had five of my fish die, pulled my abdominal muscles and faced something so weird I'm not even getting into it here. The sad thing is that the month isn't even halfway over yet. I really gotta look into getting that April/Nuclear shelter built in my basement, stocking it with 12'' singles, a TV and an Xbox and just sitting this whole month out next year. [...]

Last Friday Mixtape of the year, and it's NOT the "best of..." that I expected to put up. I'm still reviewing all the tracks posted this year in the Friday Mixtapes, and trying to find a way to narrow the list to something that won't resemble a top-100 list. It's a long weekend for me, so I'll have pleanty of time to debate the best songs with myself, and hopefully, will publish the list next week. Instead, I've put together a regular Friday Mixtape with that awesome Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip track I mentioned in a [...]

Komakino were named after a rare Joy Division flexi-disc. The band are already in my good taste books. Their edgy guitars and anxious vocal style all seem to fit together. They seem destined for big things in 2008 having recently toured with the likes of Bloc Party and Editors. Steve Lamacq invited them to do an Evening Session on his BBC Radio1 show (which is downloadable on their Myspace). If you look at the bands Myspace they have shared a stage with the who's who of indie music. As a live act they have earned rave reviews the future [...]
I found a pile of old magazines in my room the other day and plucked from it a copy of The Fly [ link ], a rather good free publication that I suggest you seek out. This issue happened to have a feature on new bands, "2006. The New Breed" and considering I did a feature on 2007 new bands, I thought I would do a bit of appraisal of The Fly's choices. My choices haven't done great by the way (apart from Jack Penate), although I did mention the likes of Jamie T, Klaxons and Kate Nash as being [...]
Few bands have inspired in as widespread a manner as Joy Division. From musical influences, to image and style, Joy Division's affect on modern music is undeniable. Komakino have one of the more obvious influence traits, they are named after a Joy Division song... But unsurprisingly, they are perfect capable of holding their own ground. As I travelled to see them in Spilsby last weekend at new night, White Hart Indie , I imagined an Editors-esque barrage of mournful yet energetic vocals, mechanical bass lines, sparse affected guitar. But before Komakino took to the stage I was treated to [...]
