In a world where the expression "mixtape" is commonly used for a bunch of mp3s put together in a zip file, !K7 records tapes series gets back to the old-school way. After The Rapture and The Big Pink , it's time for math-rock band Foals to release their own two-sided compilation on July 24th featuring tracks and remixes by Nicolas Jaar , Blood Orange , Dorian Concept , Bibio and many more. Fresh off the plane from a three month work stint in America I was asked by The Recommender if I wanted to cover Field Day in their absence. I figured that this would be a suitable reintroduction to London and it's diverse music scene. Besides, half the people in the audience looked like they thought [...]

Elokuussa Flow-festivaalin päälavalla yleisön hurmannut kongolainen Konono N°1 saapuu maaliskuussa vihdoin ensimmäisille omille keikoilleen Suomeen. Yhtye esiintyy Helsingin Korjaamolla perjantaina 4. maaliskuuta ja edellisenä iltana Tampereen Klubilla. Kongon demokraattisen tasavallan pääkaupungissa Kinshasassa 60-luvun puolessavälissä likembe- eli sormipianomestari Papa Mingiedin perustama Konono N°1 on nauttinut vahvaa uutta suosiota 2000-luvulla yhtenä maailmanmusiikin rajoja rikkovista yhtyeistä.

I was given the opportunity to spend a week with Ghanaian legend Obo Addy during his stint at a show I engineered a few weeks ago, and in between stories of gigs in Nigeria with Fela Kuti and skirts with Sammy Davis Jr. , he introduced me to the beauty of Konono N°1 . The group was formed in Kinshasa, DRC in the late '702s, where they combined electric likembés with traditional rhythms and instruments made from items [...]
Konono Nº1, "Mana Na Bana" (2010) find it on Assume Crash Position It's hard to decide what kind of tunes should soundtrack whiling away the days of the heatwave. Do you want something as slow and lazy as the feeling of being overheated, or do you want that overwhelms the heat with heat of its own? "Mama Na Bana" is definitely the latter. It starts with a nice African jump feel, shared vocals, and the ubiquitous thumb pianos of Konono Nº1, but just before [...]

Kongolainen Konono N°1 liittyy uusimpana kiinnityksenä Flow'n sunnuntain esiintyjäkaartiin. Odotetun Suomen-debyyttinsä tekevä kollektiivi korvaa ohjelmassa aiemmin julkistetun etiopialaisen Mulatu Astatken esiintymisen. Astatke on peruuttanut kaikki kesän esiintymisensä sairastapauksen johdosta. Kongon demokraattisen tasavallan pääkaupungissa Kinshasassa jo 1960-luvulla perustettu Konono N°1 on nauttinut vahvaa uutta suosiota 2000-luvulla eräänä luontevimmin maailmanmusiikin rajoja laajentavista yhtyeistä.

Next Thursday Konono no1 will be playing at the Santa Monica Pier as part of the annual Twilight series. These guys take DIY to a new level. They have built all their instruments out of whatever they could find and come straight off the streets of the Congo. This music hits right in your soul and forces you to dance. It's well past 1:00 a.m., the Lakers lost game four, Andrew Bynum may be out for the rest of the playoffs, and my brain is wobbling like a 504 Boy punching Glen Davis' gut. Also, I may never recover from seeing the sight of Brian Scalabrine in a suit - it was like putting lipstick on a pig that vaguely resembles a jumbo-sized El-P. The last thing I want this blog to be is a compendium of links to my stuff at the Times, but I am overworked and underpaid, and....I'll stop now - I have been listening to the [...]

100. Green Day American Idiot Punk bands don't normally look to make concept albums, but then defining Green Day as a punk band is kind of an iffy take on things. The band has managed to go from a group of kids that were mad at their parents, to a group of adults that guide misguided teens through their adolescence. American Idiot was the transition point and will probably stand as the band's magnum opus throughout the rest of their career. Green Day - "Jesus of Suburbia" [...]

It's Sunday again; today we huddle together, join hands and receive mass. And by "mass" I mean massive amounts of good music, from yours truly. Is "receive mass" even proper English? I don't know the answer to that question because I am Das Juden. Also, I've been throwing back mimosas and Jim Beam/Coke ever since I got off work at seven o'clock. We squeezed in a game of Apples to Apples before True Blood and Hung tonight. Watching those shows made me pine for the days when Sopranos and Six Feet Under [...]

Is everybody sober yet? Did you enjoy your holiday with family, loved ones and friends? Mine was pretty disappointing, seeing as how for the first time in my life I didn't know what my "plans" were until the middle of the afternoon. I guess as long as there is a barbecue at the destination things can't be too bad, but it certainly felt a lot different from past July 4ths. I think next year maybe we'll have a Swan Fungus party with fine beers and a room filled with despicable elitists. This website should have a massive enough audience by [...]

When Vampire Weekend released their debut album back at the start of the year, it had many critics reaching for words like High-Life. I wonder how many of the people talking about these words actually knew what they meant. I couldn't claim to know, so for me to start talking about High-Life and whatever other African genres were being name-dropped would have been a bit fake. But now I've think I've got a better idea, mainly through the excellent new compilation Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump , which was recently released on the rejuvenated Strut Records . [...]
Tulsa, Oklahoma: Where cows run scared and women resemble the cows in the looks department. I'm not sure why I chose to cease driving early today instead of continuing straight through to Amarillo, maybe it had something to do with the combination of miserable weather and sleepiness. Whatever it was, fate conspired to bring me back to Tulsa for the second time in my life. Not much has changed here. It's still not the best place to "hang out" or meet any interesting characters (unless gang violence is hip these days. Is it? What about in an ironic way?). After [...]
Monday: Rock Central Plaza @ Mercury Lounge 9pm $10 Rock Central Plaza started the year off great getting a load of press and buzz built up over their release Are W e Not Horses but some how that buzz has tapered off a bit lately. I don't know why that is as the album is terrific and I hear their live show is something worth seeing. Seems like a good way to spend a Monday evening. Rock Central Plaza - "My Children Be Joyful" Tuesday: [...]
