I do love songs based on or suggesting some relation to literature. So here's a double handful of my favorites, with snippets of whatever they might be drawing from. pedro the lion, "of minor prophets and their prostitute wives" [ buy ] This is looking farther back than most of the other literary-based songs in my collection; the title refers explicitly to the book of Hosea, and the song modernizes the constant call of the original work quite nicely. Its persistent beat and [...]

There are days when I LOVE being a music blogger. Saturday was one of those days. Because Kris Delmhorst's outstanding PR person sent me these tracks off of Kris' upcoming album " Shotgun Singer " (due out on April 21 – Signature Sounds). The album was produced by one of Josh Ritter's bandmates/producer Sam Kassirer . I've seen Sam jam on the keys with Josh live, which makes me even more " keyed up " to hear the entire album. Because I am so freaking excited about [...]
The best seat at the Green River Festival is in the shade along the ridge by the side stage, watching the motionless kiteflyers staring at the outfield sky. Because every year, there's that one sidestage artist that comes out of nowhere, a voice and style fully formed, and -- where did HE come from? -- blows you away. You have no idea who you just missed at the main stage, and you don't care. Such was the year I discovered Jeffrey Foucault . Foucault (pronounced foo-kalt) is a scruffy, [...]

Thursday features take the week off… Since this is like the first full week you have probably worked in a while, I figured you might be in need of some party music by today. I made this mix at the tail end of '03, made up of songs that came out that year. 1. Andrew Bird ~ Skin 2. Zwan ~ Baby Let's Rock! 3. Ben Harper ~ Bring The Funk 4. [...]

NYC : For lunch, wander north into the perpetually shrinking Little Italy (which is surrounded by the perpetually growing Chinatown) for some real New York pizza. It's best to avoid Little Italy's restaurant-laden main drag, Mulberry Street—unless you like over-priced, unsatisfying Italian-American food. Instead, try Lombardi's (on Spring Street between Mulberry and Mott Streets). The pizzas are cooked in an ancient coal oven and are arguably the city's best. ( gayot ) Nola : Creole soul food is Praline's much-applauded specialty, and it's considered by many locals to be the best in the city. Originally [...]

Liberty is the possibility of doubting, of making a mistake,... of searching and experimenting,... of saying No to any authority - literary, artistic, philosophical, religious, social, and even political. - Ignazio Silone , The God That Failed, 1950 " Acoustic Wednesday No. 51 " 01. Foundry Field Recordings : Battle Brigades Part II (Daytrotter Session - SXSW, 2007) 02. The Innocence Mission : Brotherhood of Man , We Walked in Song (Badman Records, 2007) 03. Fink : [...]

I wanted an excuse to post Guillemots ~ Trains To Brazil because it is a great song and more people need to hear it. And I "tracked" down a few others for ya (in no real order): Eliza Carthy ~ Train Song (Which was the other song I REALLY wanted to post, and I owe Bruce some Velvet Love . Thanks, B!) Ryan Adams ~ Trains (live) Hem ~ Betting On Trains (live) Sonya Kitchell ~ Train [...]

Eilen Jewell's joined in on the fun with this report from SXSW. For a very short time Eilen Jewell ( here ) was one of the best unsigned acts in the country. Then the great New England folk label Signature Sounds decided to pick up distribuion of her self released disc, then they wised up and signed her to a full fledged contract. Her new record, Letters From Sinners and Strangers , is due out in June. Here's a great video of the band. And here's her song "Back [...]

Kris Delmhorst makes some kickass folk/bluegrass music for a woman from the North East. I don't really recall how I found myself on her website , but I did a year or two ago. There I found a song called "East of the Mountains" and fell in love. The song is a modern classic in the bluegrass tradition. It reminds me very much of a mix between Dolly Parton and Gillian Welsh. A tale of a lovelorn girl who was denied the man she loved because of her family. It's got a fun little beat to it as [...]
