I know, I know. Lists are annoying and trying to assign rankings and value to art is subjective at best. That's why these records - 25 from releases that really made an impact on me in '11 - aren't branded with any type of distinction other than "favorite." These are records, not songs, that warmed my heart, eased my pain, inspired my creativity or simply helped tap my toe or nod my head. They never asked for anything more than a listen, and I was more than happy to oblige. That being said, there [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

by teepoo Since my site was down this week and last week's chart was missing, this is a combination of 2 weeks. Enjoy! Keep hyping up your favourite single song posts, so that they can make the chart and somebody else can fall in love with it too
by teepoo Sorry for the lack of posts. I've been busier than I thought I would be with Canadian Music Week. Lots of reviews and pictures of shows and conferences will go up soon! Here are this week's popular single song posts. Keep sharing your favourite tracks with people to keep them on the charts.

by teepoo Calgary artist released their debut No Man's Land few days ago on their Bandcamp . It's a collection of beautifully orchestrated tracks under the most delightful vocals. The 15 track album is quite a deal for $7 . Kris' will take you on a journey through folk-blues, piano ballads full of colour and passion. November Steppes is one of the tracks they offered up for free and it's been on repeat lately. 2011 just started and I think I'm quite [...]

Today marks the digital release of Kris Ellestad's fantastic LP, No Man is Land . Last year this record consumed me. For weeks, even as I'd review other records, I'd find myself pining for Kris' warbles and beautiful melodies. Thankfully, the rest of the world now has a chance to hear his work. The plan is to have a physical release later in the year (assuming Kris gets the cash to put this out on vinyl.. hint hint folks), but until then, just know these fifteen songs need to be heard. To celebrate release day, I'm re-running [...]

Click here to download the compilation. Anyone loving the Christmas season? If you are in the holiday spirit, Canadian indie style. You should check out Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada Deux from Oh! Canada (aka The Line of Best Fit). Its their second compilation and features a slew of great Canadian talent. From the likes of Great Lake Swimmers , The Zolas , Basia Bulat , Leif Vollebekk , The Russian Futurists , Evening Hymns , Snailhouse and many [...]

If herohill had any influence and wasn't comprised of readers that only unite on their hatred of Robin Williams , I'd start a label just to press and put out Kris Ellestad 's work. Hopefully in the next few months, a label will take a risk and agree to put out No Man is an Island . I guess for now all you need to know is that it's as captivating a record as I've heard all year; one that could choke Pete Campbell with it's ambition. Somehow [...]

Ever wonder what the band Women would sound like...as a different band? Me neither, but now we don't have to! Church Of The Very Bright Lights , out of Calgary, is James Cullen, backed by Chris Reimer on drums and Matt Flegel (of Women) on bass. Church Of The Very Bright Lights recently finished up a new album, titled Gang Crimes , that Cullen is releasing entirely for free download. Gang Crimes was actually sent over to us by Kris Ellestad, formerly featured in one of our artist profiles way back when [...]

Frank Yang If you were at The Garrison on Friday night and felt a sense of deja vu, it was with good reason. Though the occasion was the third anniversary party for Toronto label Out Of This Spark , you might have also been at the second anniversary party a year ago at The Tranzac which featured 3/4 of the same performers in The D'Urbervilles , Forest City Lovers and Jenny Omnichord , or maybe the Evening Hymns release show in December , or perhaps at the [...]

I know, I know, it sounds inconceivable!! But could it be true? We got a lovely and personable email from one Kris Ellestad , a Canadian from the prairies of good ol' Calgary ( S man, where you at? ) Ellestad is a special treat for all of us, because well, he is into this whole digital age mp3 download thing that spurs artists to fame, and he really gets it: I've been writing and recording songs for about 8 years now, though I wouldn't say I began to write songs I enjoyed [...]

My recent obsession with hand claps doesn't look like it has faded much, so here's another handful of songs to celebrate it. Included are brand new tracks from Beck, Bent, Black Lips and Blockhead. Kris Ellestad and Shout Out Out Out Out supply some claps all the way from Canada, while the local "one man band" Scott H. Biram brings it on home. Kris Ellestad - "The Secret" ( más ) Black Lips - "Veni Vidi Vici" ( más ) [...]

I am off to Germany for a few days so here is a condensed look at some of the bands I have come across recently: Je Suis Animal are Norwegians who claim to take influences from The Shop Assistants, Pastels, Joy Division, Talulah Gosh, The Sugarcubes and my Bloody Valentine to name but a few. They have three songs for streaming/download on My Space , two of which are pretty good. These are former single Fortune Map and a track called Labyrinth Game which [...]
