Vermont dweller Kris Gruen is a poet, songwriter and musician. Son of famed photographer Bob Gruen , Kris grew up in NYC accustomed to hanging in the hearth with musical icons. As a grown young man with his own family now, Gruen spins beauty from metaphorical, sometimes cryptic, poetic stories just as the fair maiden transformed straw to gold in goblin tales of yore. Gruen's allure lies in spacious simplicity. Softly, quietly, Kris Gruen paints a lovely world. His voice carries the serene feeling of early Beatles ala McCartney's Blackbird. Perhaps there was a sort [...]
Vermont-based Kris Gruen paints an intriguing black-and-white portrait of a love song with Nuschka, a semi-cryptic fortune-speak kind of story that resides next door to Sufjan Stevens and down the street from Bright Eyes. Stripped to guitar and his inviting voice, you wouldn't mind this neighbor knocking on your door for a few fresh eggs or a cup of sugar on a Sunday morning. Kris Gruen Website
2007 marked a year of touring for Montpelier-based (by way of NYC) singer/songwriter Kris Gruen . In addition to numerous stops up and down the east coast, Kris started playing Nashville regularly and opened for Sean Lennon . It'll be interesting to see if Nashville has had any impact on his chamber folk sound as he starts work on his new album. Gruen is currently working on the album in the NYC studios for Mother West but there isn't any release date set. It'll also be interesting to see if his [...]
I think I've seen Brian Clark perform more this year than any other musician. Between his work with Kris Gruen 's band and a recent modified I See Hawks lineup, I saw Clark play three or four times in 2006. And while I wasn't in Austin last spring, Clark played down at SXSW with Gruen. It's always good to have some SXSW representation in the year end survey. Clark said he has been saving money to get some recording equipment which has cut back on his CD consumption but still came up with a [...]
The Bowmans / Kris Gruen show this past Friday ended up being one of the best shows that I've attended all year. Outside Montpelier's cooperatively owned coffee house was the first snow of the year. Inside was warm, comfortable, and exciting. I caught only the last two songs by The Bowmans, but little was heard as the time was spent talking to friends and settling into my first Organic Oatmeal Stout. Soon after Kris took the stage along with a full 4 piece band. The music was much fuller and expressive then his debut album, Lullaby School , [...]
Next Saturday, Aug 19th, Kris Gruen will kick off an East Coast tour with a show at The Black Door (9:30pm). Kris will be playing with a band and is out supporting his release from earlier this year, Lullaby School . A few months ago, I reviewed Lullaby School for Seven Days. You can read the review here . Or I can save you the suspense and just say, "I liked it." I've seen a few bands at The Black Door but I've [...]

Kris Gruen | Coming to Langdon Street | Oct 20
Do you remember a few posts ago when I was talking about all of the fun things going on this weekend? Well, add another one to the list. On Saturday night, Kris Gruen will be bringing his brand of Americana folk rock to Langdon Street Cafe . Since Langdon Street and Charlie-O's are just two blocks from each other and the weather looks pretty good this weekend, you could jump back and forth between Kris Gruen's and The Starline Rhythm Boys' shows . Not exactly CMJ but it's still fun to [...]

The "Brooklyn" of the Old North Woods
One last post from me, Murf of False 45th , before I'm out of here. I thought I'd share some good indie bands from the Burlington (VT) area with you NYC music lovers. So, here's a quick rundown of the indie bands that are pushing their way through the choking sea of jam bands in VT. The Jazz Guys The Jazz Guys are the most popular band going in Burlington scene these days. Their [...]
