Finnish alt-country act The Latebirds report that they recently recorded a Kris Kristofferson composition with the man himself lending some guest vocals. Look for said track to appear on the band's next album, due out in 2009.

There's been lots of music going on around the house the past few days: We've been family air-guitaring around the living room to Foxboro Hot Tubs . The kids are preparing for their Christmas concerts. My wife is sitting in bed next to me telling me about Esperanza Spaulding (who is a Portland native and apparently dropped out of high school but ended up teaching at Berklee at age 20). The band is practicing (and getting marginally above complete suckiness). If we could only get all three [...]

Here's my weekly reminder to tune in to Sinking with Sylvia and Todd (and Matt Dwyer) Friday from Noon to 2:00 PM on Little Radio . Tomorrow their guests will be Adeline and the Philistines . The Philistines features Jim Putnam (Radar Bros.), Aaron Kyle (Le Switch) and Stevie Treichel and Brian Cleary from the Movies. It should be a lot of fun. Each week on the show, the hosts are cool enough to play an official You Set the Scene pick. My pick this week is Kris Kristofferson 's "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down." The [...]
. In the second installment in what promises to be a long series of lesser-known originals, we look at a couple of traditional folk songs which became rock classics, a couple of songs recorded by others before the composers scored a hit with them, an influential group that only ever released four songs, and a soul classic that never became legendary because its cover was even greater. A big thank

I've been listening to 'Legend - The Best Of Willie Nelson' and "Whiskey River" just came on. I love that song - and hearing it brings back so many memories of back home in the States. There was a group of us that on special occasions would pull out the ol' Willie Nelson CDs, late night, after a few beers - and just sing along to his classic songs like "On The Road Again", "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain", "Always On My Mind" and of course, our favorite, "Whiskey River". Luckily [...]

One of the miracles of popular music is when a songwriter expresses a feeling or a moment in a very specific way that rings true on a personal level. Not just the feeling of missing someone, or the joy of payday, but something very specific. Like being alone in a new town, sitting in a park on the weekend and wishing you just could go back to work already so that you wouldn't have to be alone with your thoughts. I love songs about disappointment and broken dreams (why, no, I'm not in therapy - what makes you [...]

Kris Kristofferson: Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down [ purchase ] This is Paul from Setting The Woods On Fire . Good luck with the new format. Here's one of my favorite day-of-the-week songs. Most people are familiar with the Johnny Cash version, but this song was originally composed and recorded by the great songwriter Kris Kristofferson, who also wrote Me and Bobbie McGee.

Of course I'm sitting here having woken up after only 4 hours of sleep and questioning whether or not I was over the top. I didn't make out with anyone. But I did show off some cleave. At one point I stood on top of a chair and yelled, "I'm Justin Noble's coworkahhhh-rrrrrrrr!". I think I also admitted my brief sortie with cutting, being gay and thoughts of suicide to people I've never met before as an attempt to break the ice. I don't know. It was a weird bar. Too bright and too many chairs. The music wasn't loud [...]

My parents were responsible for turning me on to a lot of music as a child. I'll often talk about my Mom turning me on to The Beatles or my Dad introducing me to the Beach Boys, but there are so many artists that go unmentioned. Take Kris Kristofferson for example. I wouldn't have though about him had I not received the following e-mail with information about his acoustic tour. I'm glad I received it. My Dad used to own a '67 Mustang with an 8-Track player in it. We listened to a lot of music in that [...]
Forget all the bouncy, poppy perkies for now, their sparkly guitar teeth grinning at you even as their shiny eyes (dare we say their bright eyes) gaze at their trendily torn-up tennis shoes, as their lithe vegetarian bodkins bop across the stage, as their mealy-mouths mouth random lovelorn/pseudo-political pablum. Give me grizzled (dare we say haggard) old men anyday, gruffly telling life's ragged long-term truths, kicking dust down your throat with their tattered cowboy boots, planting said boots squarely in the seat of fashion store denim via their concise chords and plain, well-chosen words. [...]

While getting last week's Homonym ready, while tracking down a picture of The Duchess in her wedding dress, I remembered our wedding song: Zeppelin's "Thank You". I realized there are oodles of different songs with this title. Hence this week's Homonym. Led Zeppelin Kris Kristofferson Dido Charlotte Kendrick (or dos?) Michael Franti And Spearhead Mad Professor & Lee Perry Pale Fountains [...]
No Holy Mountain screening tonight, because I could not convince anyone to join me on my adventure. How tragic. I guess I could always rent it, or Nat could dub me a copy (I think he still owes me for the Can DVD). Either way, I've been pretty exhausted all weekend so it's not a complete letdown. I can sleep a bit longer tonight. I don't have any exciting plans for this upcoming week, but hopefully some will form and I'll accrue more awkward experiences to share with you. All three of you. Music [...]

Let me spell sometime out to you... It's Sunday. I live in Tennessee. I'm quite surprised this has never happened before, actually. Mp3: Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down - Kris Kristofferson (2.51) [Buy it on 'Live at the Philharmonic' , 1992] So why not Johnny Cash...well, a) this is Kris Kristofferson's song and b) it's simply the best version I've heard. It was recorded in 1972 when Kristofferson was sort of at the peak of his abilities. The [...]
Today we finish up the sample songs off my favorite albums of the year. My top two are perhaps the least well-known releases on this list, but don't think that I upped their placement just to have an unconventional top pick. I actually feel that these two albums are the best I've heard this year, surpassing the better-known and more-respected musicians who are below them on the list or not
