As promised, the 2008 revamp of the Tribe classic, Midnight. With Q-Tip on the mic duties and Cool & Dre on the beat, it's a refreshing (and really synthy) update to a timeless slice of the Golden Age. I think it's cool, defo. Who wants vodka and classic rap remakes? I do! I do! Well maybe not the vodka. Not that I have an issue with vodka, but really, unless you're a closet alcoholic, Russian, or in high school, who really enjoys the vodka as their go-to adult beverage? To me, when you say "I really like vodka" you're saying "I really like getting drunk...fast". But hey, what's wrong with that. ANYWAY, the good folks at Smirnoff commissioned three legendary MC's to re-create one of their classic jams with the help of some of hip hop's [...]
DOWNLOAD Q-Tip - Midnight '08 (Prod. by Cool & Dre) (MP3) Part of the alcoholic remixes and I feel any moment Rick Ross is about to drop a verse right in the middle of this track. Previously: KRS One/DJ Premier - 'Criminal Minded '08' ( download ) Common/Just Blaze - 'The Light '08 (It's Love)' ( download )
Continuing the series that started with KRS-One and Premier coming together for Criminal Minded 2008 are Just Blaze and Common with their '08 revamp of The Light. Keep an eye on the Smirnoff Signature Mix Series site on March 4th for Q-Tip update of Midnight produced by Cool & Dre. For all intents and purposes, I think they all sound dope, and it's refreshing to hear these classics floating back to the top. Check the live performance below. Enjoy. Common - The [...]

All right, today's edition of our ode to the old school features the Blastmaster, KRS-One, and his original group Boogie Down Productions. My reasons for this are two-fold, first, as Ack mentioned on the hill last week , KRS was called overrated by a the writer of a blog both the Ack and I read and enjoy (The Passion of the Weiss). In fact he was called "wildy overrated", which the Ack and I thought was a bit of the ole wild exageration. His main point was actually that KRS is incredibly annoying, [...]
Yesterday Passion of the Weiss talked about the old skool hip-hop doc Rhyme & Reason and he mentioned he was not feeling much of Krs-One's catalog. My reply was.."ah waaaaaa?" This isn't a post attacking Jeff, because he brings a lot of good old skool hip hop to the table. I honestly just can't believe he isn't into the blast master. While I agree with Weiss in the fact KRS-One is a blow hard, I give him a lifetime pass. So in an effort to sway any doubters, here are three classics: [...]

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video A special collaboration between some of hip hop's heavyweight hitters in celebration of the Nike (can you say SWEATSHOP?!) AF1's 25th anniversary . The original song was produced by Rick Rubin and this hot remix has DJ Premier's touch all over it. It's great how he hooks up the MPC at the beginning like he is on a calculator. dj premier , nike , nas , kanye west , [...]
What's up? I've been away for like a minute-more like two months. I was knocked out of commission for a while taking care of some business. And damn, did I miss a lot of music this summer. Like Rock the Bells and the Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival. As well as Rock the Bells and the Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival. I spent the last few days cleaning up the blog, chopping weeds and kicking out the homeless, Giuliani style! But I'm back, and I'm bringing it back with the dude who'????s trying to bring hip-hop back. Back from what, I'????m not sure. [...]

Today's Song is "Je n'en connais pas la fin" from Jeff Buckley. The title very loosly translated means I don't know if it's the end . I meant to play this yesterday since it was the 10th anniversary of his tragic drowning. I couldn't find a video for the song, so instead the video is Jeff Buckley performing "Halleluja" Jeff Buckley ~ " Je n'En Connais Pas la Fin " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =ee7oEeEidW4 The video today for OS/OHW Wednesday is the song [...]
Ok, he's a new post series I'm starting here on the hill. Basically, every Monday morning when you stop by this here site, you can count on finding a couple gems from hip hop's ballyhooed golden age. I'll sort through my vast digital treasure trove of hip hop hits to find songs I consider classics for one reason or another. It's not as if you needed another reason to come to climb the hill, but this should give you a little added incentive to cyber scale us on a Monday morning. I know there's plenty of other [...]
My week in rock kicked off on Tuesday, when I headed out to Yonkers to check out the annual Murphy's Law Halloween show. Maybe it suggests a sad state of affairs for NYHC when Murphy's Law can't even get a booking within the 5 boroughs for their Halloween show, but who knows. The show rocked pretty well though, with better than average openers for a hardcore show, reasonable drink prices, [...]
