Jamie Oliver-he of "The Naked Chef" and the surprisingly successful attempt to wean Los Angelenos from their flavored milk-has launched a music and food shindig in the U.K. dubbed The Big Feastival. Set for July 1-3 in London, festival-goers will be able to graze at a ridiculously enticing pupu platter of gourmet food, picked by Thomasina Meiers, Giorgio Locatelli, Peter Gordon and Jonathan Downey. Norman Jay is set to curate the Good Times Bandstand, and the Charlatans, New Young Pony Club, Mystery Jets and Kurran and the Wolf Notes will [...]

Here at MM we share, chat, argue, bury and praise music on a pretty regular basis…like daily. So throughout the year, the Mackerel crew (Mrs Mackerel, Barry-Sean, Christy-Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Starbar, MM and others) keep their own ever-changing top tens ready for publication at the climax of the festive season. So last, but very much not least, is the lovely (though flu-stricken) Mrs Mackerel and her choices for 2010. We all sweat a little over our top tens and I don't know why really. This is just what I think, you will undoubtedly think [...]

This year, to start the ball rolling we have, the already much missed Polly Pocket's entry. At least she'll remain a MM contributor if nothing else. 10. So here we are again. A round-up of our favourite posted tracks from September, all beautifully compiled and presented for you to put on one lovely mix. And as always, a couple of new tracks for you too. Enjoy. HILLTOP HOODSI know, I know... Hip-Hop may not be my forte/expertise, but this song in my mind is some great 'underground' shit! What the hell does 'underground' mean anyway? Why the fuck am I swearing so much? Well.. 'underground' is probably best left as a subjective term, and I'm swearing cause I'm talking about hip-hop, which happens to be what Hilltop Hoods is good at. They be bonafide. (

After a brief foray in MM's territory, recommending Kurran & The Wolfnotes' Your Four Limbs , and enjoying HUGELY the Pancake Breakfast track, The Ballad of Maynard Noe (and let's face it, who doesn't enjoy a pancake breakfast?), it's back to Friday business. For some unfathomable reason, I was thinking about Level 42 this week (in my defence, only once and rather briefly). It could have been to do with the quiz MM and I were putting together for tonight, in downtown Charlbury. Decades ago, when young and foolish, [...]

We have to confess it was Mrs Mackerel's ears that pricked up yesterday when listening to 6 Music and Kurran & The Wolfnotes came on. Their latest single Your Four Limbs immediately sets them apart from the busy Brit-folk scene that so many are trying to inhabit these days with plaintive, resigned lyrics and a darker undertone than most can manage. A sinuous melody and smoothly picked guitar gives it a hook that stays with you long after the song has concluded. As much the Decemberists as Johnny Cash , try [...]
Kurran and the Wolfnotes continue their steady ascent to wider acclaim with their second single, 'Your Four Limbs', which sees lead singer Kurran pining after the object of his affections over the kind of insistent melody that'll cling to your subconscious like a limpet. The band themselves cite Neil Young and Interpol as influences and it's that combination of classic folk songwriting with contemporary sensibilities and concerns that makes them such an interesting prospect, add a bit of the Byrds and the Decemberists to the mix and you're onto [...]

With 'Your Four Limbs' Kurran and The Wolfnotes have produced a much needed twist on a genre that is often considered too derivative.

Feel like Déjà vu? Well don't worry...it kind of is. I posted a track by the catchy Brit studs (and lady) Kurran And The Wolfnotes less than a month ago, and now they're back with more in "Here To Fill You In". It doesn't get quite as loud or uproarious as "Your Four Limbs" , but it proves Kurran And The Wolfnotes' consistency - Karbel's unmistakable croon shines from the beginning. Are we on to something here with a new band eager to work their way up the indie ladder? I think so. [...]
No need to thank us, but we've been able to snaffle on a free download of a new Kurran and the Wolfnotes song for you lucky, lucky people. Showcasing all the things we love about them, the gorgeous harmonies, the spidery guitar lines and Kurran Karbal's lovelorn lyrics, 'Here To Fill You In' is the perfect appetite whetter before their upcoming single 'Your Four Limbs' is released on the 13th of September. Following the timely demise of the nu-rave scene, attention has turned to the burgeoning Brit-folk scene that has brought forth Laura Marling , Noah and the Whale , and Mumford and Sons among a host of others. While many of these bands will inevitably fall by the wayside (thankfully so in many cases), there will be one or two that will stand the test of time. One act hoping to stay relevant when lumberjack shirts and beards are little more than an embarrassing memory is Kurran and the Wolfnotes . [...]

I probably should have gone to bed as I'm really tired at this moment. But I really have to share one more track that made its way into my inbox some days ago. "Your Four Limbs" by London-based quintet Kurran And The Wolfnotes is a wonderful folk-pop song starting with only Kurran Karbal and his acoustic guitar, slowly building up and peaking with the band members singing all together in the chorus. It's a lovely jam and I'm really looking forward to hear more from these guys! The single is available for pre-order via [...]
Got an email from a PR person last week, addressed to Robin, asking me for a response to an email he had sent last week about Kurran and the Wolfnotes. I was indignant. How dare he send me, the all important music blogger, an email meant for somebody else? Doesn't he know that Noise Narcs gets literally TENS of emails a month? And another indie band with "wolves" in the title? Seriously? Why not just add a "fox" in there? And so I sent off a polite but curt note letting him [...]
Some catchy indie-folk from London based Kurran and the Wolfnotes for you all - it's pretty melancholic yet overwhelmingly endearing, beautifully constructed folky gem. The NME gave another one of their tunes away awhile back and you can grab it below. 'Your Four Limbs' is out 13 September on Chess Club Records Mp3: Kurran and [...]

Nothing like a catchy, British pop rock ditty to get you going on a dreary day. I add British because come on, they typically capture the indie rock sound way better than Americans. Don't deny the truth! Kurran and the Wolfnotes will officially release "Your Four Limbs" September 13, as a single on Chess Club Records . In the meantime, you guys get a treat and can download the track directly below (approved by their team, don't worry). Listen up. Muscles will loosen, you'll feel a little like jelly, and ecstasy will ensue. Something about [...]

What is there to say about Communion ? It started off in 2006 as a club night and community at the Notting Hill Arts Club, founded by Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg) and producer Ian Grimble. But my what an impression it has left as it has provided a platform for the newest bands on London's circuit. The night has seen the likes of Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, JJ Pistolet and Peggy Sue grace the stage and has become closely associated with the recent resurgence of folk in the capital. "You're not the only one who feels like this." As a follow up to last month's Kurran and the Wolfnotes post , albeit an untimely one, the band has since released their debut single, "Whatabitch," early last month. After seeing them perform a few weeks back at London's Borderline, I'm pretty much trying to soak up anything and everything Wolfnotes related. Posted below is the single's b-side, courtesy of NME's Daily Download feature, [...]
