It was towards the end of that run and the singer was walking with crutches after a hiking mishap. His iconoclast reputation as a divinity school dropout (one credit short of his [...]

The premiere male jazz vocalist, in his prime and handling both jazz and pop material with aplomb. It's not even close. Kurting Elling is far and away the boldest, most talented and consistent male jazz singer working today. Since his Blue Note debut in 1995, Close Your Eyes, Elling has presented a compelling case for the jazz vocal tradition. Elling combines the sonic richness of Sinatra, the beat adventure of Mark Murphy, and the modern cool Cassandra Wilson. He meshes hip and slick, and it's starting to look like he's never going...

Chicago Tribune's "Cheap Eater" , aka food writer Kevin Pang , took to his Twitter account today to release the first details on a new live compilation bootleg from The Metro . The Chicago Tribune reported earlier this week that the 32nd annual Chicago Jazz Festival , which kicks off on August 31 and runs through September 5, will get quite a makeover due to city budget cuts. The Grant Park portions of the Chicago Jazz Festival will be trimmed to two days, September 4 and 5, but the event planners have turned this potential setback into a major positive by setting up a week of jazz festivities at Millennium Park, the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies and the Chicago Cultural Center. [...]

Many Chicago based artists were nominated for Grammys at the 52nd Annual Awards show held last night. But only two, hip-hop diva Kanye West and jazz singer Kurt Elling , managed to walk away winners. West won twice, both for his collaboration on the Jay-Z hit "Run This Town" also featuring Rihanna from The Blueprint III which West also produced. The song won in the Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration categories. Elling [...]

Filed under: All About Jazz It's that time of year again where I take a moment to look back and try and piece it all together with a succinct list of the year's 10 best jazz albums. This is an annual rite for jazz scribes and just about anyone else out there that covers a beat for a publication. One could argue that it is a sort of weird to rank different artistic endeavors (After all, isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder?), but these lists do serve a purpose -- the [...]

For the second holiday music mix, I have compiled 24 tracks about that fat, jolly dude from the North Pole. There may be better versions of some of the songs out there (i.e. Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby is far better than the Pussycat's) but the theme that binds this mix together is ridiculousness. Whether it's the inclusion of two Lynyrd Skynyrd songs (yes, Skynyrd did indeed release an Xmas album), a Slim Shady parody or the Cheech and Chong classic, this is one goofy mix of Santa-centic tunes. 1 ~ Brave Combo: Santa's Polka [...]
A few Christmas songs: Trembling Blue Stars - Christmas & Train-Trips & Things (from the Shinkansen Christmas EP ) Mew - Snow Brigade (from Frengers ) Squirrel Nut Zippers - Winter Weather (from Christmas with a Kick ) Kurt Elling - Cool Yule (from Christmas with a Kick )
