It's been awhile since we've heard new material from Kurt Hagardorn, the AM radio/alt-country/pop songsmith whose 2007 effort, Ten Singles , was one of that year's better local releases. On that disc, Hagardorn came across as a bit of a pushover against a barren pop-country backdrop—he was a man out of time, in love but not committed, and floating along in life. Fast-forward to "Blown Up" and Hagardorn sounds like a new man. From the opening tip-off phrase (a generally overused technique that Hagardorn completely pulls off like Buck Owens in "Tiger By The Tail"), you can [...]

Match the names of these brilliant up and coming bands to the correct songs... Easy? What's all this about? They say you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover (maybe you shouldn't judge Lethal Weapon by Danny Glover), but still we frequently look over bands just because the name conjures up thoughts of something you wouldn't associate yourself with liking. Right? Especially in the case of the internet when your first contact with a band is usually when you first read their name, it can become difficult to find good bands. With [...]

Like most kids growing up in the seventies, Kurt Hagardorn watched Saturday morning cartoons. In his house the difference is what came after. "Every Saturday my mother would put on a record really loud and clean the house. She vacuumed to Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and dusted to Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal, "says Kurt, whose pop songs draw their inspiration from those perfect records from the 60's and 70's, listened to over and over again growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Later, as a teenager in East Tennessee, Kurt formed [...]
It wasn't Monday morning, it wasn't even Tuesday morning this week. Nope, this week it's the Tuesday Evening mp3 . That's not as catchy as "Monday morning mp3," but it will have to do. So, here's a great song by Kurt Hagardorn , out of Portland. Kurt is going to be opening the next SPB Powerpop night, which is March 10 at the Mars Bar. He's got this great roots pop thing happening that seems equally influenced by the Beatles, the Everly Brothers and some of the modern-day alt.country folks like The Jayhawks (with perhaps a [...]
