The line-up for this years Sasquatch Festival came out on Thursday night and it is a pretty decent looking list. Even though there is roughly a -12% chance that I will be able to attend this year, I thought it would be kind to preview some songs from artists that I would be excited to go see. This is just a small sampling so head over to The Official Site for more info about bands playing and how to get tickets. Enjoy! Free mp3: Active Child - Hanging [...]

The band The War On Drugs formed the same way many great bands start: two guys with shared musical influences met, had a few drinks together, and decided to sit down and write some music. In this case, the primary songwriter, Adam Granduciel found his creative muse by collaborating with Philly-guitarist and fellow Bob Dylan-fan Kurt Vile. As Granduciel explained in an interview with Slug Magazine : "Playing on each other's songs and having someone to bounce ideas off of is a beautiful thing in music. I don't think either of us would have made the records [...]

You don't have to be a long-time Swan Fungus reader to know about my infatuation with the television program Top Chef. Hell, I even feigned interest in one of the show's judges for years in what surely must be the Internet's most extreme case of long-term, long-distance faux-stalking. There's much more to take away from [...]
Prior to hearing Smoke Ring for My Halo in full, the two Kurt Vile songs I came across via numerous blogs were "In My Time" and "Jesus Freaks." Perhaps not coincidentally, these are the two most upbeat tracks on the album, and the two most focused. The majority of the rest of Smoke Ring depicts Vile as a smart but apathetic songwriter. Writing for Coke Machine Glow , Christopher Alexander said "Kurt Vile's music sounds like it was made entirely from bed on Sunday mornings," which I think is a pretty vivid portrayal of the [...]

Editor's Note Happy New Year! Some of you are probably wondering what happened to us. Well work, family, and of course organizing our little (not so little anymore) variety show Snob Theater has taken quite a bit of time away from the website. We've had probably the best year so far and I'm happy to announce my favorite records of 2011 to launch the reboot of Kata Rokkar. I don't review albums at all but i do listen to a shitload and it's been a great and surprising year for new music. [...]

If rock 'n' roll has always tried to distance itself from popular culture/ industry as much as it can (which may not be much at all, despite Johnny Rotten's best efforts ), indie rock has been particularly adamant in its (usually doomed) refusal. Indie rockers only support independent musicians at small venues, with iPhones in the pockets of our Urban Outfitters jeans. When faced with these contradictions, some cringe, look away or maybe even pour out some PBR in mourning. However, sometimes it's simply too much to take, like when the superheroes of M83 licensed "Midnight City" to Victoria's [...]

Each of our writers who posted this year worked tirelessly to cover bands that normally don't appear on your FM radio stations, and in the true spirit of the season, here are their lists. All albums are linked to iTunes. To play all Soundcloud clips continuously, click on the play button in the bottom right of the screen. TOP 10 ALBUMS 10. Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes 9. [...]
There was so much really great music that I heard this year, to the point that putting together these lists was quite difficult and time-consuming. But even so, there are still a lot more albums out there that were recommended to me by others that I simply never got the chance to hear, as well as some that I felt needed more listens for me to fully absorb them, so they sadly won't be showing up on here (Danny Brown, Julianna Barwick, The Weeknd, Fucked Up, PJ Harvey, Main Attrakionz, Tune-yards, Yuck…I could go on and on). I'll [...]
