Hotly anticipated on the back of 2011 breakthrough album Smoke Ring For My Halo , Kurt Vile’s latest – Wakin' On A Pretty Daze – immediately establishes an overtly colourful tone right from its opening title track. Clocking in at nine minutes-plus, the song has it all: prolonged jams, striking nods to Neil Young, and a laid back eminence that is all too easy to become lost in. As Philly-dweller Vile’s fifth studio album duly unravels however, it becomes ever more evident that the elements responsible for making this introductory wig out oh so appealing [...]

"Vile was never one to say no to a seven-minute bridge but his third LP sounds like it was recorded in slow motion..." Kurt Vile | Waking on a Pretty Daze Kurt Vile’s last album opened with a bang. Smoke Ring For My Halo was all solid guitar lines and impenetrable tangles of power chords. Wakin on a Pretty Daze announces itself in a slightly more subtle but no less powerful way. Vile was never one to say no to a seven-minute bridge but his third LP sounds like it was recorded [...]

Given and Taken in Ink's mixes rarely have any thematic connection, other than genre and the time when most of the songs are released. So far the lone exception was our most popular mix on 8tracks, Sad Songs for Summer (2012) . And while it wasn't quite intentional, The Beginning of Spring works in much the same way (albeit not sad, and not summer...but you get the picture). Due to the whole birth-of-first-child thing, I haven't really had a chance to feature some of the big albums that were released in [...]

Kurt Vile may have already ended the race for 2013 album of the year. At the very least it's a top 5 contender. Vile is Philly brethren, and we've been following him for a (surprising) amount of time . Oh how the blog years stack up. We can't say enough about his expansive and overwhelmingly excellent new album Walkin' on a Pretty Daze (4/9 Matador). Go stream it right now - or sift through the experience of the streaming track below. I foresee the purchase of this double LP next [...]

Shawn Brackbill You have to wonder in Kurt Vile ever regrets leaving The War On Drugs after touring their 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues , considering the level of success the Philadelphia outfit would achieve with their second album, Slave Ambient . Or maybe not. Given that Vile's laid back, groovingly psychedelic guitar-rock travels a fairly parallel path to what Adam Granduciel is doing with The War On Drugs, their fanbases probably overlap pretty significantly and Vile's own 2011 effort, Smoke Ring [...]

In an interview with AV Club around the release of Childish Prodigy , Kurt Vile explained his work ethic: “It's like climbing a ladder. I like to climb it really slowly. I could probably get really professional right away, but I like to take baby steps and find my own way”. In this respect, nothing much has changed – Kurt Vile certainly never comes across as a man in a rush. But in taking his time, he has made a lot of alterations [...]

What albums are you looking forward to this year? I’m also expecting good tunes from future releases by Camera Obscura, Kylesa, Baths, !!!, Saturday Looks Good To Me, Mount Kimbie, The Polyphonic Spree…
It’s a gutsy move to play a 9-minute song on the radio. But when Anne Litt gave the new Kurt Vile a spin a couple weeks ago, it was a transcendent moment of radio magic. Kurt is a really exciting artist. KCRW DJ, and fellow Philly native, Mario Cotto is a big fan and he was my highlight of Matador Records' 21 st anniversary show in Vegas a few years back. He can be delicate and he can shred and [...]
