This represents the longest gap I have had since I started this blog int he late 1940's (or something). One thing piles on top of another, and pretty soon yer under a mountain. Assorted weirdness has happened in the interim some good, alot bad and some just plain bizarre. I hope to spin some tales of some of this ... in the meantime, I think this song sums things up rather efficiently...
Pop some popcorn or, like me, pour yourself a Craig-from-Friday sized bowl of sugary cereal, and watch the 1997 documentary Rhyme & Reason. The film mostly consists of interviews, and [...] The post Saturday Matinee: Rhyme & Reason appeared first on The Smoking Section .

This week sees the release of The Bravest Man in the Universe , the intriguing new record that teams iconic soul vocalist Bobby Womack with Damon Albarn and XL Records founder Richard Russell, both of whom handle production duties. It's an intriguing proposition on paper, and on record, the results are thoroughly excellent listening. The intergenerational nature of the collaboration, which also features an unlikely duet with Lana Del Rey — and the news this week that John Cale is working with Danger Mouse — has got us thinking about other occasions when artists from different [...]

CLICK IMAGE TO VIEW VIDEO This is as classic as it get's, Kurtis Blow's 1980 appearance on Top Of The Pops. Back when hip-hop was still a baby and a swear word may have caused considerable controversy Kurtis Blow's "Christmas Rapping" had universal appeal. PADDY Tags: christmas , kurtis blow , rap

Well, seeing as how we're a week away from Christmas, and that we've been in a festive mood around these parts all month, thanks to our rather awesome (if we do say so ourselves) #herohillxmas Advent Calendar , a Christmas themed Old School Monday seemed in order. I was about to do this from scratch, when thankfully I realized that I'd done a fairly thorough Christmas Rappin' post a couple years ago. It seems like it would be rather difficult to do it any better than I'd already done it, so I'm putting those same songs back [...]

A plethora of legendary rappers converged on the Soul Train Awards' stage to pay tribute to the fallen legend. Doug E. Fresh, Goodie Mob, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow and Whodini took turns rapping versus and chanting choruses from a few of Heavy D's best hits during the three-and-a-half minute tribute. Doug E. Fresh introduced each act as they came out starting with Goodie Mob and Naughty By Nature who performed "Mr. Big Stuff (Remix)". Next, Big Daddy Kane came on stage for "The Overweight Lovers in the House" and finally Kurtis Blow came out in a white [...]

Ah yes, The Breaks, one of my favorite joints of all time and a song that has recently had me pondering the current state of music, and more specifically, the current state and nature of hip-hop music. With so much materialistic rap out there these days it’s important for me as a fan to go back and look at where it all started. Artists today focus so much of there energy on being “real”, taking it to a competitive level of “realness” with other artists, when in reality they are simply masking their true identities behind designer clothing and expensive [...]

Haruomi Hosono with Friends Of Earth - Alternative 3 Pretty abstract stuff here from Harry, but ultimately successful (I think) as a self-contained piece of music. Recorded and mixed digitally October-November, 1984, Tokyo. bonus beats: Kurtis Blow - AJ Scratch (1984)

Pictured above: not DJ Las K Makdett - Song For You (DJ Las K Remix) Kurtis Blow - The Breaks (DJ Las K Rework) Over here in the US we're going through a little bit of heat wave, so I figured I'd give you guys some nu-disco to match how hot it is outside. I present DJ Las K, a Parisian who specializes in French House so aggressive I'm somewhat worried for your safety. It's not like hard electro aggressive, more like [...]

What's that you say? Where's all the bangin' disco house been these days? I hope you're sitting down, cause if not this will knock you straight to the floor. Frenchman DJ Las K has a sound that rattles your chest and keeps your feet moving all night long. For bass addicts like myself, this is sweet sweet heroin. And I will never go to rehab. That Kween G is a problem. While I was away eating tacos and trying not to get kidnapped by taxi drivers, she was filling in on my show plotting a coup. This is her interview with Kurtis Blow backstage at Tone Nightclub in Sydney, before his performance. Pssssttt... whatever.
