What is this?! The Daily Graboid on a Tuesday? Yes, indeed it is. I really should do this on actual release days, but I like having that extra day to listen to everything that's available. On this Halloween week, we have two really standout soundtrack compilations with the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There and Joy Division biopic Control . Both of these have been covered extensively on the blog, along with having a giveaway last week for [...]
You finally get a break from the budget busting weeks previous of new releases - but that doesn't mean you're off the hook entirely. There are a handful of worthwhile albums that require your attention. The soundtrack to the Joy Division biopic Control comes out today and includes songs from the seminal band and others by their equally formative contemporaries like Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Kraftwerk, The Buzzcocks, and New Order. As Joy Division continues to influence bands today, it's only fitting that (at least) one of them appear on the album: [...]

Kyle Andrews has a new record Find Love, Let Go coming out that as far as pop singer songwriter stuff, is near the top of my list. The album was recorded in his bedroom and at friends' houses around Nashville. Find Love, Let Go is full of nice dark melodic passages and lyrics with fairly heavy emotional content, but ultimately is a pop record. Sometimes you hear a record and it just draws you into its' clutches, and compels you to want to feel the way the character(s) in the music are feeling. I guess [...]

I wrote about Kyle Andrews the very first month I started Out the Other - the eighth post on this blog was actually about the track "Amos In Ohio," which I posted because I was reviewing Kyle's album for WRVU. I like to think my writing has improved since then (note me NOT linking to that post - the blog was atrocious back then), but it's nice to see I at least kicked things off with the cream of the local crop. Since then I've seen Kyle play a bunch [...]
Just a quick update after getting back from an long camping weekend. My Steelers mangled Shane's Saints in a pre-season barn burner... but more on that later. Kyle Andrews Kyle Andrews was nice enough to send us a preview of his upcoming album (due out this fall). Amos in Ohio was a great introduction to this Nashville song writer. The tracks were mostly just Kyle, his guitar and his trusty sampler - but they still stood out. The energy and riffs he used helped him distinguish himself from [...]

The year's gone by like the last weekend summer. Two weeks from today marks the end of our first year at university level, and the beginning of my trip back to my home in Ohio . The Canals leaving camp. So, before we top off the school year with a series of forthcoming guest posts, I'll let [...]
I wrote this yesterday on the Chicago centric music blog Transmission , and then last night I stumbled across these new live songs on Josh's MySpace page. I'm sure there's a treasure trove of live recordings on archive.org but these are officially blessed by Josh Rouse. Enjoy. Kyle Andrews and Josh Rouse are currently on tour together. They share a love of Nashville. Josh lived there for a short time and recorded his album Nashville there. Kyle is also [...]
Loads of original content coming soon, plus the first iff contest. In the meantime, other folks are doing yeoman's work... We've got a favorite new blog, Kirstiecat, reporting from the Second City. Today she's excited about a new Bert Jansch tour date in Chicago, and also recently reported on live shows from indiefolk metahero Jandek and Vashti Bunyan, complete with shiny pics. Pitchfork also has
Here is the first 'Soundchecked' mix of mp3s. This selection of songs is featured in my debut column for Soundcheck magazine, a magazine called, surprisingly, Soundcheck. It's a young music mag based in the cradle of indie music, Austin, TX. Okay, maybe cradle isn't the right word... but it is the home of the internationally renowned indie music fest, SXSW. And if that doesn't make it the cradle,

Chicago native Kyle Andrews just released his debut LP, Amos in Ohio , this past June. However, I first discovered him with the simply irresistible "Sushi," which does indeed sound a bit like Eels ' Mark Oliver Everett playing a Japanese sushi bar. You can picture Bill Murray there, too. Drinking Suntory whiskey. Now Nashville-based, Andrews does wonders with simple instrumentation - some soaring keyboards here; some gentle washes of acoustic guitar there. (I also can't help hearing just a twinge of Jeff Tweedy in [...]
