Kyle Bobby Dunn Last year, Kyle Bobby Dunn released his latest album, Ways Of Meaning - following on from the career-spanning A Young Persons Guide To Kyle Bobby Dunn, it was a meditative, introspective album that drew equally on ambient, drone and modern classical reference points. Ahead of the release of some further new material this year - Bring Me The Head Of Kyle Bobby Dunn , to be released on Low Point - he's made 'An Evening With Dusty' available for download. According to the soundcloud page, it was "composed [...]

LMYE's New Label of the Year hardly released a thing in 2011. Not much of a basis for recognition, you may think. But however minimal its output what did come out of Desire Path was exquisite - & if there's a better record in 2012 than its next release (which almost made it out this year anyway, so gets co-opted for these purposes - along with its debut release from late last year...) these ears will be very, very surprised (& thrilled, obviously)... A label " focused on creating distinct pathways " [...]

Slow off the mark, as ever, but finally registered the new Benoit Pioulard EP, Plays Thelma (on Desire Path ), via the lulling, blurrily ruminative Calder (today's Track of the Day, for what that's worth). Blurb: " Thelma is best described as a place existing in between—a lake within a haze. Against its concave mirror, the sonic territory of Benoît Honoré Pioulard—documented across three acclaimed [...]

A Kyle Bobby Dunn six-pack? Don't mind if I do. A sextet of intensely tasty, recently revealed treats from the post-classical composer's archives & pre-release work. Together, these new-ish "epic & dronelogical" workouts help frame the mournful beauty & muted fanfares of this year's fine Ways of Meaning (Desire Path), the latest refinement of Dunn's utterly uncommon sound. "new songs to bore you all to tears [...]
Ways of Meaning is a confident and soulful ambient record by a young man whose musical ability and emotional maturity outstrip his age. At barely a quarter-century into his young life, Toronto-born Kyle Bobby Dunn has quietly and prolifically released a spate of ambient music that challenges us to think and feel more deeply than we often do. Ways of Meaning, as flush and fresh as a debut, yet as mature as an old master's swan song, is, according to Dunn, "an attempt to harness the finality of meaning as a shared experience... a salve for our collective...

Despite last month's paltry mix and last week's confession re my lack of listening, I've somehow managed to come up with eight new-to-me tracks in the last month, crafted into a tidy mix for your listening pleasure. In truth this collection came more or less from just three sources: apologies/props to my friends at the Cargo Culte , from whom I pilfer many tracks every month (this month, Steve Moore and Harald Grosskopf); shout-out to Swan Fungus, whose top ten of the year so far clued me in to the Tape track; and a special nod to Miles at [...]
Kyle Bobby Dunn 's trade is, simply put, drone: the constant wall of shifting, overarching sound. It seems that Dunn's release schedule is just as constant, over the past nine or so years releasing drone in every musical format and every possible length, impressively coming up with fresh, interesting things to say every few months. But the most surprising piece of all this is that no two releases are identical, that each one has something new to offer. On Ways of Meaning , Dunn stretches his tones as far as they'll go, seemingly working in a world [...]

MP3: Kyle Bobby Dunn - Canyon Meadows Even if New York-based, Canadian composer Kyle Bobby Dunn works more in the electro-acoustic realm, his "treatises on the resonance of memory" feel like a cross between hypnogogia and long-tone chamber composition (see also: Sean McCann's texture-drenched works). Dunn's weightless guitar and organ tones blur (or totally askew) any sense of time that exists at the start of these uplifting glowers. Each of the ambient works on his forthcoming Ways Of Meaning LP reminds me of some new New York Dawn, like Eno & [...]

Drone and ambient music cross over into the consciousness of independent music fans from time to time, though you could argue that these artists are finding an audience now more than ever. Last year, Oneohtrix Point Never's Returnal was his most widely praised - and more importantly, heard – record yet, while Emeralds also made something of a breakthrough with Does It Look Like I'm Here? Already this year, Tim Hecker's poignant, destructive Ravedeath 1972 has reached listeners he hasn't reached before. Perhaps as even more song-based, linear, independent music tends increasingly towards the [...]

It's time to listen to a bunch of the tracks I have not had a chance to post. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. You can stream all the songs in this mix using the Yahoo media player at the bottom of the page OR if you are browsing with Chrome you can play (and scrobble ) the whole page using the ex.fm extension OR you can just download any or all of the tracks at your leisure and play them using a digital media player of your [...]

RSTB and Ghostly International have shared a love over the years for artists who blur the lines between minimal, electronic and classical music. Ghostly's often labeled these releases SMM and they've got a few gems under their own canopy that fall into this vein. With SMM: Context they begin an annual compilation series that collects some of the great artists making music outside their umbrella; collecting works from previous RSTB faves like Leyland Kirby, Svarte Greiner, The Fun Years, Rafael Anton Irisarri and Peter Broderick. Though culled from disparate sources the compilation weaves together a tapestry of bleak [...]
Kyle Bobby Dunn playing live in a church with a string & brass ensemble 2 weeks ago. God fucking dammit why didn't we all go to this? Also, wait until the end... wtf is that all about?
Just a few months ago, New York's Kyle Bobby Dunn released the delicately powerful A Young Person's Guide To . With only a little time to work on a new release, he's ready to let you give a listen to his new EP, Rural Route No. 2 , a stream of which is available on his site . It may only be two tracks clocking in at just over 20 minutes, but there are some compelling moments that any ambient music fan should be interested in. Unfortunately, though, too often the disc seems stuck in [...]

Kyle Bobby Dunn - Dissonant Distances Standard Form put out a limited edition 3" CD-R from the new master of minimal drone, Kyle Bobby Dunn . Only two songs, "Dissonant Distances" & "Senium III," but they're both around the 10 minute mark and are as gorgeous as can be. Of course "Dissonant Distances" has its moments of, well, dissonance, using a strange sort of muted industrial ambience. It's a bit more textured than his previous [...]
