I missed on Kyp Harness a couple times. Not only did I miss his press release from April (the album came out 5-10 on Pigeon Row) but he's released seven previous records, which I had never heard. Hailing from Canada, Kyp has been called "...the most vital, essential Canadian singer-songwriter out there." - Calgary Straight. And when Daniel Lanois says, "A great writer"; I listen. It was exciting to be a teenage music fan in Toronto in the early '90s. Many of the great bands that the city is now know for (eg Broken Social Scene), had their roots in that time. One that hasn't gotten the mainstream coverage he deserves is one Kyp Harness. On May 12th, Harness will celebrate the release of his ninth album, Resurrection Gold, with a show at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto.
In an era where blogger hyperbole seems to indicate every band with a demo should be playing to sold out arenas, real talent is often confused with real... convenience, and the term "musicians musician" gets thrown around too liberally. Successfully delivering on the sound de jour is one thing, but converting career musicians with an understanding of the past and the present into fans is another altogether.
