In a quest to discover the relationship between musicians and their cities in America, London's Black Cab Sessions rolled through the States in 2010, traveling from Athens, GA up to New York, NY and stopping in Philadelphia along the way. The intimate live-session curators expanded on their M.O. of "one song, one take, one cab" ... Continue reading
"This was my first home when I moved to Brooklyn," said Colin Stetson as he wiped down his face. "Every show from 2004 to 2005 that I played was here. Thank you to Jeff and Joss. I will miss it." Stetson's cheeks weren't wet with tears, but rather the sweat that comes with simulating the experience of profound existential realization by blowing continuously into a horn for four minutes without break. But everyone and everything around him, including that sweat-slicked face, was stirred. Zebulon is closing. For my friends that don't know this neighborhood well: This is a [...]

Musical guests include Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum , Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio , Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Kool A.D. and Dapwell of Das Racist , and Guy Picciotto of Fugazi . John Joseph with Vernon Reid at Bowery Electric 11/6/2012 Last night's Rock for Light benefit featured a rotating cast of musicians who all sat in on Bad Brains songs at Bowery Electric . The show, part of a benefit to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy (as well as Amnesty International), featured Bad Brains frontman H.R. , as well as John Joseph of Cro-Mags , Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid, members of Antidote , TV on The Radio , The Mob [...]
With news that Mali's Amadou & Mariam have a new album on deck, the splendid musical duo release the visuals to their new single "Wily Kataso". Not only is the song great, but it features appearances from Santigold and TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe. It is nice to see all these talented artists come together on one track, showcasing their deep African roots. Amadou & Mariam's Folila is due out April 10. [ via ]

Amadou & Mariam will put out a new record this week, and it's a fairly star-studded one at that, as we've already heard the Santigold-featuring " Dougou Badia ." Now the Malian duo have put out a video for album track "Wily Kataso," the song that features TVOTR members Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone in support. Watch it below. Read More...
The Malians and the Brooklynites join forces.

review by Suzi Pratt all photos by Marianne Spellman During the dreary Seattle winter chill, two Seattleites were lucky to escape to the other side of the continent for the second annual Bruise Cruise Festival , sailing from Miami to the Bahamas. The three-day escapade is hardly your retired grandmother's cruise, although there were plenty of those on board as well. Instead, Bruise Cruise is like summer camp for some five hundred tattooed, cigarette-smoking indie rockers and hipsters who devoured fruity drink concoctions and action-packed music sets all weekend long. Unlike other huge, multi-stage music fests, [...]
Tv On The Radio didn't take too long to follow up 20092s brilliant 'Dear Science,' and as usual didn't disappoint. This time the Brooklyn outfit set up camp on the West Coast and the sunnier climate appears to have seeped through to these tracks. With another mild change of direction the tracks on 'Nine Types Of Light' [...]

Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2012 RAIN MACHINE @ ZEBULON 258 Wythe Ave Brooklyn, NY 11211 FREE, 8PM It's a surprisingly unimpressive night for shows tonight. Nothing truly stands out, but there's certainly nothing wrong with a free show at Zebulon with Rain Machine (aka Kyp Malone from TV on the Radio ). Katy B @ DROM Bluejay @ Cake Shop Jonet @ Angels and Kings Hugo @ Mercury Lounge (early) Team Genius @ Mercury [...]

New Party Systems is a new supergroup, featuring TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone and two current and former members of Liturgy, and their track "We Are" is an honorable attempt at creating an anthem for the Occupy Wall Street movement. The group doesn't show up in the video. Instead, starry-eyed Occupy sympathizers from around the world lip-sync the lyrics and generally show off the sort of fresh-faced idealistic glow that you only ever see at protests. Watch it below. As previously reported, TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone recently teamed with ex-Liturgy drummer Greg Fox to record Occupy Wall Street-inspired music. As Pitchfork points out, their first collaboration has now hit the web, an anthem titled "We Are" released under the moniker New Party Systems. Dave First, formerly of The Notekillers, composed the track with Malone supplying vocals, Fox on drums, and Liturgy's Bernard Gann on bass. Oneidia drummer Kid Millions was also reportedly involved in the collaboration, but does not appear on the track. An mp3 is available for stream and/or purchase below. Further [...]

Leave it to Stephen Colbert to bring a crowd together - an eclectic one at that, too. Last night, Malian collective Tinariwen came "to rock the gourd" and also sat down to talk shop with Colbert. Although Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and Eyadou Ag Leche had to use a translator (named Lola) to connect with the Comedy Central goldmine, they did have support from recent collaborators Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio. In fact, both Adebimpe and Malone joined them on a performance of “Tenere Taqqim Tossam”, off this year's Tassili [...]

Here Four Tet Kieran Hebden has his way with the Tishoumaren gyspy folk-blues avatars Tinariwen in seven-minute remix fashion. The African outfit's latest LP for ANTI- Tassili is the first of theirs to abandon electric guitars in favor of acoustics, which makes Four Tet's cut-and-paste electronic manipulations of this TVOTR-guesting track ironic, and typically creative. There's three movements: one for the Tinariwen-sung part, another for the Tunde-and-Kyp bit, sending it off with a looped-sample arrangement. If "Touareg house" house wasn't a genre before, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't, meet Four Tet's new creation. [...]

Earlier this month, we posted the trailer for the Black Cab Sessions ' tour through the USA, which included a stop in Philadelphia and recording sessions with several local acts. The Philly-centric part of the trailer specifically lists performances by Freeway, Spank Rock, Meg Baird, Kyp Malone, Plastic Little, and Reading Rainbow; back when they were here last November , we noted that they had recorded with Grandchildren as well. For now, however, babelgum.com has videos of sessions with Strand Of Oaks and A Sunny Day In Glasgow. You can watch both videos below; more videos of the Black [...]
If the idea of a Daytrotter-style acoustic session in the back of a London taxi sounds like your idea of a good time, then you're probably already familiar with The Black Cab Sessions. This British-based web video series has taken an unlikely idea and turned it into a hit, recording 99 episodes since May 2007 and featuring artists like Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, Brian Wilson, and Jens Lekman (who performed, of course, "Black Cab" ). In fact, the concept's been such a success that a TV show is in the works, and it involves the series coming to the [...]
Review by Michelle da Silva (@michdas) Photos by David Thai (@david_thai) It takes a lot to sell out two back-to-back shows in the same city, but that’s exactly what Brooklyn-based band TV On The Radio did when they came to Vancouver on July 20 and 21. The night at the Commodore Ballroom started out with [...]
