Shorthanded Goals is a feature that melds the best of both worlds. More new artists wanting to catch your eyes and ears and hearts – whether they be free giveaways from albums I’ve already covered, or free tracks sent to me that I never got the chance to listen to from bands/readers/whoever, or maybe even the usual PR and label goodies that arrive on the regular. These are the tracks I end up missing, so you get first dibs. Think of yourself as the last line of defense. Don’t let these sounds disappear! [...]
As with last week, this week's lot of new albums offers an impressive collection of fresh releases to keep any music lover busy for the next few days. After more than three years, the popular indie band Local Natives finally dropped the follow-up to their 2009 widely-acclaimed debut record. The new album's lead track, "Breakers," [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
If all rock music were made in the upper stratosphere, it would all sound like La Big Vic. The title track from the Brooklyn trio's new album Cold War soars and sparkles like so many blue-sky sprites. Emilie Friedlander's vocals bloom above synthetic choirs, lilting strings, ghostly synths, and big,... The post La Big Vic - "Cold War" appeared first on Noise Collective .

2013 continues to bolt out of the gate with another solid week of new releases. With the long awaited followup to their well-received 2009 debut, Local Natives top our list of must-buys. Hummingbird finds the Silver Lake, Los Angeles, group pushing into new territories of song structure, challenging listeners while still enticing them the same rich harmonies that made them an initial success. Another anticipated followup out this week is the seventh studio album by Canadian twins Tegan & Sara , whose Heartthrob is an well-produced, achingly romantic collection of indie pop. [...]

La Big Vic are not that of one member's contextual background -- or even the marriage one would expect from such broad strokes -- but an experimentation in avant-garde dream-pop. After one listen to La Big Vic's Cold War, you will likely notice a group that thrives on the influence of dichotomy; a collective of musicians that exist in the space between classical and electronic, the polarity of such varying cultures and find themselves most comfortable at the center of what pulls them all together. Upon further research, it should make complete sense to learn that this odd amalgamate [...]
Grungy dream pop that is excellently unpolished. Underwater Peoples , 2013 7.9/ 10 La Big Vic put out a nice little electronic-meets-indie rock album back in 2011. It did pretty well but didn't offer much in the way of a unique thought. The beats were minimal [...]
It's Friday, it's the start of a long weekend ahead with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday (if you're in the U.S.), and it's our first National Holiday of 2013. I'd say things are pretty sweet. And hey, even if it's *just* Friday for you, I think that still ...
It's Friday, which means that, yes, it's time for us to round up the 10 most noteworthy tracks of the week that's gone by for your listening — and, ideally, downloading — pleasure. It's been a pretty fantastic week for new music, and thus there's plenty of goodness to be had after the jump: the return of Suede and that Bowie chap, Jens Lekman writing a song for two big-hearted fans, Thom Yorke doing Thom Yorke things, new solo stuff from Electrelane's Verity Susman, a kinda interesting Majical Cloudz remix, new songs from Low and La Big Vic... and more! The new year brings the world a mix of tentative waiting with a sensitive touch of reflective sentimentality. While the mainstreamers await a new track from Justin Timberlake, we await Julian Lynch's new album Lines due March 26 on Underwater Peoples. Then with MIA getting told by Interscope to "darken up" her forthcoming album Matangi, the release date wait has been extended until April while Maya reconfigures all things pertaining to her relevance. But then a love not got slipped...

La Big Vic is Toshio Masuda (a Japanese producer/multi-instrumentalist ), Emilie Friedlander (a classically trained vocalist and violinist) and Peter Pearson (a keyboard player and avant-garde composer). Given the diversity of the three, it's no surprise the trio doesn't really sound like any other, which is why we thought La Big Vic was the perfect band [...]
La Big Vic swing back with new single. Combining swinging jazz and experimental synthesizer pop, La Big Vic are causing quite a stir. Today, the band released a new single, "All That Heaven Allows" from their forthcoming sophomore release, Cold War. Download the new song, "All That Heaven Allows" , [...]
La Big Vic "All That Heaven Allows" The feeling of La Big Vic's second album Cold War is not far off from that of Destroyer's masterpiece Kaputt , but whereas Dan Bejar's voice can't help but magnify the ironies and aesthetic tensions at the heart of the music, Emilie Friedlander's vocals are way more ambiguous. She's the first singer I've ever encountered who splits the difference between Nico/Mary Timony/Liz Phair cool-indie-girl phrasing and Mariah Carey-ish melisma. She doesn't come close to Mariah's range or technique, but she does approximate one of her most [...]

Another week of music, another week of a bunch of songs I didn't get to. Gonna change it up a bit this time and include Soundcloud streams as well as MP32s - so a good bit of free MP32s and a bit more in the way of just straight listens. This will increase the amount of folks being heard by a good amount, as well as the amount of tracks included in this little segment by a boat load. For folks still sending me tracks in the form Hulkshares and Soundowls and webpage embeds and all that other [...]
Combining swinging jazz and experimental synthesizer pop, La Big Vic grab attention immediately with their new single, "Ave B". The Brooklyn-based band includes members Toshio Masuda, Emilie Friedlander, and Peter Pearson . Each member brings a unique skillset to the group. Masuda is a Japanese producer and multi-instrumentalist with a [...]

Brooklyn’s La Big Vic are prepping their sophomore record Cold War , and you can now have a listen to the 1st single “Ave B”. Equally jazzy and hypnotizing, this is quite memorable. The blaring horns compliment these rich melodies oh so well. Cold War is due out January 29th on Underwater Peoples.
Let's get this out of the way: I've listened to La Big Vic's Actually hundreds and hundreds of times. The thing is a sprawling masterpiece. Well over a year from its release, Actually still remains a favorite among new albums and ... Continue reading
In January, experimental pop outfit La Big Vic will release their sophomore LP, Cold War , the follow up to last year's Actually . Today we have the woozy first single from that release, a jazz-accented number called "Ave B" that showcases LBV's knack for creating an immersive signature sound. Download it below. Read More...
The 2012 edition of the CMJ Music Marathon may still be a couple of weeks off but we've already been excitedly penciling in our (exhausting!) show schedules and RSVP'ing to every party invitation that comes through the ol' digital transom. We've also assembled Spotify and Rdio playlists for some of ...
