The South Coast's equivalent to SXSW, queues aside, last weekend's The Great Escape down beside the seaside was as jubilant as any Jubilee hyperbole. What of those snaking lines? Well, that for Claire Boucher may most probably have been spotted somewhere off the coast of Normandy whilst that for Friends was washed a little more literally out to sea as they played the decadently delightful Horatio's Bar atop Brighton Pier. Here's who we saw and what we thunk in fortunately concise format... Thursday I [...]

If you were a reader back in the deep dark winter of '85 2010 (big shout out if you were), and you have a particularly good memory, you may recall a mysterious French band called La Femme who caught our attention with the lo-fi surf rock stylings of " Sur La Planche ." Well they're back, and looking as aloofly attractive as only French people can, with a new track (and EP) entitled "Paris 2012," along with some truly arresting visuals. Part 'A Clockwork Orange', part the Romain Gavras directed video for Justice's " Stress ", [...]

For all those to have been reared predominantly on secondhand smoke on the booze-splatted viscosity underfoot on the carpets and plastics of Brixton's Academy, La Femme's debut London show at The Garage on this significantly more salubrious corner of Highbury is for we. And for seemingly every Frenchman and woman currently shacked up in the capital. For the Le Pré-Saint-Gervais retrospection-revelling outfit hark back to glorified ages and eras past, delving into a history of all things Gallic, groove-laden, and New Wave as the sextet surf triumphantly towards the brightest of horizontal futures. Needless to say horizontal is [...]

It's not merely the censured artwork centred on bits and pieces of genitalia that's stirring up quite the fuss around Le Pré-Saint-Gervais' La Femme , for the likes of Sur La Planche evoke a risqué sordidness reminiscent of all-too-inactive brash hip-hop hipsters TTC. Lifted off 2010's Le Podium #1 EP, its tinny production values align the troupe with Suicide whilst whippersnapping guitars recall the copious lines of Phil Manzanera circa '79, and it continues to titillate. There's a quintessentially Gallic sultriness and purposefully slinky throb underlying the track that's also bolstered by the claps of the dismembered [...]

No, this ain't the yearlist to end all yearlists. Actually, it was quite an interesting year, full of sleepers, slumbersome French kisses and somnolent earworms. In short, a year to wake up. It was called 2011. So, eleven for a year to remember. There you are: 11. Daphné, Moi plus vouloir dormir seule. I can't recall any other tune from her Bleu Venise album, but you won't get more eternity for your money. Daphné – Moi plus vouloir dormir seule 10. DJ Le Clown, Making [...]

Parisian quintet La Femme make slightly wonky, frantic lo-fi surf rock, and they sing everything in French. Still reading? Good. Le Podium #1 is the first I've ever heard of La Femme, but from the first 15 seconds of 'Sur La Planche' I knew I was going to like... Read more..

In the spirit of preparation for exam week (which if you are on this site, it means that you are procrastinating.. like myself), here is a playlist of the music that helps get me through. While some of the songs have been previously posted, some of them are also new to your ears. So check them out and happy studying! (And since I SHOULD be studying for my Italian final, 'In bocca al lupa!') Niva - The boy from the sun ( Original Post ) Bikini - American Mourning ( Original Post [...]

Parce que la musique est un puits sans fond, parce qu'elle me fait jouir encore et toujours, qu'elle me pénètre toujours plus profond, et que j'en suis jamais rassasiée. Je suis définitivement trop gourmande. The XX - Space Bass (Jamie XX's remix) Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX - New York Is Killing Me Mi Ami - Hard Up La Femme - Sur La Planche [...]

Keath's Best of February Okay, so I've been doing my "Only Listen to Music Released in 2011 in 20113 experiment for a full month (though I've only been blogging about it for 2 weeks), and I thought it would be nice to recap the month. Best Album of February Dynamite Steps by The Twilight Singers . What I said : While not as vicious an exorcism as 1965 was, Dulli hasn't lost his knack [...]

Watch our surprisingly not that shaky footage of La Femme performing at Wednesday's Wierd Records night (Home Sweet Home bar) on February 2nd. They're not only great live but they're also funny and have a stage presence that can only be described as très cool. The first video is of their single "Sur La Planche" and can someone help us with the title of the second video? www.youtube.com/watch?v=caIhhe jEgKE [...]

The "Sur La Planche" video is crimson tide surf-noir chic and the first from French lo-fi surf pop wavers La Femme , one of our current faves. Its red highlights are violently captivating and not to mention, bloody cool. They've played their first wave of NYC shows this month, and we'll soon post our recorded videos from their Wierd show on February 2nd. They're great live, so don't miss them this Friday (Feb 18th) at 285 Kent, Brooklyn. They'll be playing with Crystal Stilts, Beach Fossils, and Widowspeak. Enjoy the video below. [...]
