During the mid 1950's William Burroughs wrote to Allen Ginsberg from Tangier, Morrocco regarding his experiences with liquid oxycodone. Sold over the counter in the International Zone under the German brand name Eukodol, he described at length spending extended periods of time locked away in his room, only moving to inject himself every two hours. [...]

Last we heard from La Otracina, Adam Kriney and company had just released the fantastic The Risk Of Gravitation on Holy Mountain. That record was a space-rock fan's dream. White noise jams, cosmic guitar noodling and - for the first time on a La Otracina album - vocals sung by Kriney. The combination of monstrous psych and vocals suited the band well. And since The Risk Of Gravitation was labeled a "mini album," we knew a full-length would arrive shortly. It's been a year, but the double-album Reality Has Got To Die arrived in [...]
The papal office has an unparalleled record of corruption and criminality over the centuries, and the true history of the popes is one of scandals, cruelty, debauchery, reigns of terror, warfare and moral depravity. For centuries, the Church maintained a comprehensive account of the lives of the popes during which amazing excesses were recorded. Official [...]

Having lived in NYC for three weeks, I finally got to see my first show; lucky for me, it was a record release show for Brooklyn rockers La Otracina . On their website, these guys are described as "the New Wave of Psychedelic Heavy Metal, a contemporary musical vision exploding with classic influences and mind-warping sonic fusions! Their sound is a dense and majestic universe where the epic glory of 70's proto-metal and hard-rock dance with the graceful complexity of cosmic progressive rock and the hallucinogenic mystery of heavy psychedelia, and all the while free-form improvisational interludes [...]

There is something really great about listening to a song and thinking "this is what would happen if the Cro-Mags wrote a song, and let the THC slowly flow through their blood as they recorded." That's pretty much what I gather from this track off their newest, Reality Has Got To Die. The thing about La Otracina is that I really liked their earlier stuff (more spaced out, less "evil" vocals and lyrics), but at least there is really nothing chill or wave about [...]
Brooklyn prog-rock band La Otracina have announced the release of their new album, "Reality Has Got to Die," on September 21st from Holy Mountain . The band has also announce upcoming shows with Wizardry, Mondo Drag, Main Street Gospel and more.
Between all the festival hubbub of last week, and the growing excitement for next week , you may find yourselves in an odd position. You're exhausted from the recent festivals, but there's still one more giant to tackle: Lollapalooza. Now, I'm no doctor, but I can prescribe Friday Mixtapes by the handful. Included in each are the top singles, covers, and remixes plus songs from up-and-comers you just might want to check out. While listening you'll find yourself relaxed enough to recover from the past week, as well as excited to get back out there into the [...]
• In case you've ever wondered about the value of old NES Nintendo Games, or the people who pay for rare cartridges, here's a classic story of some nerd dropping $17,500 in the middle of a recession to own Nintendo World Championships Gold. Actually, it's not so much a "classic story" as it is a huge dweeb retelling the story about how he saw it on eBay and made an offer, then didn't get it, then got it, then almost got scammed, then finally got it. Coming soon to a theater near you. Starring the dude who had sex with [...]

The prolific Adam Kriney is perhaps best known as a drummer, hammering it out freestyle for a handful of Brooklyn-based psychedelic and improv outfits on the Colour Sounds Recordings label (Dragonfrynd, Owl Xounds, La Otracina), which he himself runs. With Vorg Vessel (Cut Hands), his first solo outing, this Boston expat sets down his sticks and sinks his claws into a classic Lowrey organ and a keyboard, presumably cheap and battery-powered. A disclaimer in the liner booklet informs us that "The Queen of Fish Mountain" (5") and "Illuminated by Stripes" (3") are 100% synthesizer and [...]

La Otracina, wasting no time between releases, have landed back at home on Holy Mountain with Blood Moon Riders . In true form the band continues its mastery of ethereal space rock, stretching billowy clouds of smoke over a terrain of formidably pummeling rock. The band, always a stunner live, has begun to seamlessly translate the expansive qualities of their work to the studio environment. Their ability to further the current generation of "prog" beyond mere nods to forefathers in the krautrock and psychedelic scenes is unparalleled, with the band folding elements of free-jazz, surf, and ambient music into [...]
I tell you, I get no respect. Did you know that there are nerds on the Internet who are, at this very moment- writing about this website negatively!? Apparently my scribes against the "independent" music scene have touched the nerds in a very uncomfortable area. I've always figured that the more negative response I receive the more good I am doing. I think it's funny that I'm being called "retarded" after I called the nerds' heroes retarded! It's a cyclical name-calling match! I live for these Internet flame wars. And now, a mix tape for you. [...]

Taking up ranks and waving the space rock flag high and heavy, La Otracina have now added a new twist to their pallette of instrumental prog as drummer Adam Kriney picks up vocal duties. They've had a slew of releases since I last caught up with them, mostly on their own imprint Colour Sounds, and The Risk of Gravitation is every bit as heavy as I remember them on their Holy Mountain debut. The instrumental passages still sound the most assured, being the band's familiar territory but the vocals are coming along nicely especially on the epic "Crystal [...]

Rather than bore you with a long-winded introduction detailing my introduction to La Otracina, I'll provide you with two simple links that will answer all your questions ("Who are these guys?", "Why should I care?", etc). That way I can skip right to the good stuff, or what we in the music journalism world like to refer to as the "meat-n-pussy" portion of a record review (that's not actually what it's referred to in the music journalism world, though I think it'd be hilarious to hear fellow Muhlenberg College alum and current senior editor of Rolling Stone David [...]
After posting Monday's track, I was struck by an idea. I would be nifty, I thought, to follow a track from the album Love, Love with a track from the album Love Love Love . Yes, clearly a very nifty thing indeed, which is why I completely forgot about it yesterday. To be fair, the niftiness or lack thereof tends to have very little bearing on whether or not I remember something. Still, it's best forgotten, as some perfunctory research suggests that no album named Love Love Love Love exists, although [...]

It's a close contest between Super Bowl XXV and Super Bowl XLII. I remember lying in my parents bed seventeen years ago watching Scott Norwood's kick sail wide, and I don't know if it could compare to watching Eli Manning miraculously lead his offense downfield to a game-winning touchdown. Absolutely incredible. Last night Ilya and I ducked in Echo Curio to watch La Otracina melt faces for about 45 or 50 minutes. Their set commenced with a two-guitar squall set [...]

Photo credit: Soul Dirty Where in the first two instalments of this series the sky was illuminated with scorching psychedelic freak-outs, now we're gradually slowing things down and glide into more dark territory. Although we still start off with the frantic psychedelia of La Otracina, soon the music slows down with the more spaced out and hypnotic rock of Pharaoh Overlord and continues to gradually decelerate from there on. This part three acts as a bridge towards the next three instalments of the "Dark Stars in the Dazzling Sky" series in which [...]
Ex-Trenchmouth drummer, current weekly funnyman Fred Armisen contributed to last night's Tomorrow Show. Today I walked around town today, stopping at Sea Level to buy some half-priced albums before they close their doors. Tonight there was good home-cooking (or so I imagine, I ate a pizza while everyone else labored over the stove and oven) followed by an all-too-brief barbecue/party at a house in the Echo Park hills. Truly it was a good weekend. This is where I'd express dissatisfaction at tomorrow being Monday if I actually had a job...but I don't. So I can talk about anything! Unfortunately, I [...]

Holy Crap, its about time someone picked up the space/krautrock torch and just ran with it. I mean really ran with it. La Otracina have taken the spacey textures of Hawkwind via Guru Guru and thrown them straight into the mouth of the best of the heavy Japanese psych sound circa the early PSF label. A swirling heady trip that has the muscle to not fall off into the land of nod. This has to be some of the most fully formed psych I've heard in quite a while. The Brooklyn trio's latest album Tonal Eclipse of the One [...]
