La Patere Rose 's (my translator says their name is either The Rack Pink or The Pink Peg - I'll go with the latter as it sounds cooler and makes some sense) self titled disc was nominated on the longlist for the Polaris Music Prize. Anyway while I complained of the number of Montreal based bands that ended up on the list, I liked what I heard from the 3 piece pop outfit. In French for the most part with some English infused, I find myself like an outsider unable to understand the lyricism. So while I can [...]
Montreal own La Patère Rose has been on the up and up lately, winning awards and contests here and there almost outshining some of the band members main project Misteur Valaire. Signed to my/your all-time favorite Montreal label [Dare To Care Records] (not that there's any other big local label in Montreal), They came together to unveil La Patère Rose new video, La Marelle , signed David Valiquette. And if I didn't know any better, I'd say that the singer of the band is basically the girl who was fairly drunk [at 7pm] at my housewarming last [...]

It's no use trying to determine why a certain song becomes a big summerhit or not. There are loads of quality songs that could have easily conquer with stupidity like The Ketchup Song, Bandoleo or The Macarena, but one way or another didn't make it to the charts. Well, then we make a list ourselves. Coming up the next few days: ten Chansons du Soleil (some old, some more recent) appealing to the sentiment of that special summerfeeling. Hot, loungy, catchy, maybe a bit lazy, but always sung by a FS approved fille. Nuff said, the first in [...]

Siobhan Wilson - Protective Sheet [...]

While we're on the subject of odd sounding bands (like Holden, below), try on La Patere Rose for size. A three-piece, fronted by bubblegumgirl Fanny Bloom, who take their inspiration from anybody between Beck and Brel. That means kaleidoscopic pop tunes, with girly squeeks, serious melancholic piano and rockin' electronics. Like Holden, they can completely change the atmosphere in a song, but keep their lollipop charm. Untitled debut album is just out, and was released by the same label as Coeur de Pirate. La Patere Rose - Les Deux Bonnes Soeurs [...]
