Our man Flater may have left the Chippewa Valley for the 24/7 combination rave/orgy that is Chicago, but his bread-making, rubberband-headband and basketball shorts-wearing spirit is still here, persisting in the hearts and retinas of all who knew him and suffered the chronic snow-blindness that came from looking in the general direction of his immodestly exposed and highly reflective (bright, bright white) legs. God protect his soul navigating the dingy corridors of that non-stop feast of Saturnalia that is the windy city, that suppurating gas bladder of festering urbania, where the pizza sauce scandalously rests ON TOP of the cheese. After a lengthy hiatus, Laarks finally made their triumphant return to Eau Claire, storming the House of Rock on a frigid Thursday evening. Zoo Animal's Holly Newsom and the Gentle Guest warmed up the crowd, and by the time Laarks took to the stage, fans had finally regained feeling in their toes. It felt like years since they've played a hometown show with their full roster, but it was great to see the guys certainly haven't lost their knack - cranking out old favorites and teasing us with a few new songs from their upcoming sophomore album, due sometime in [...]

Paper Mice Three and-now-the-weather-which-is-d ownright-pleasant-today reasons to roll your eyes at that weather related cop-out and defiantly head over to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. It's Monday. Thanks to the good folks at the Empty Bottle that doesn't have to have the generic negativity Monday usually conjures up. For no money down, you can see Chicago's own Paper Mice and their bass forward post-rock. I want to call them an unholy alliance of Mission Of Burma and Primus, but I feel invoking Primus is taboo these days. But... [...]
This video has been making its away across the web over the past few days. It's a live clip of The Shouting Matches, a blues rock duo consisting of Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Volcano Choir) and Brian Moen (Peter Wolf Crier, Laarks). No one should be too surprised to hear Vernon in this musical context seeing as how he has a really soulful voice (I mean, did you hear that alternate version of "For Emma" on Bon Iver's MySpace Transmissions? Hot damn!). Turns out, The Shouting Matches have been around for a few years now. The video is [...]
Peter Wolf Crier embark on the great unknown of a national tour with sexy folk rock. Turf Club - Minneapolis - Music - United States - Concert

This morning, as we rolled out of the huge bed we all share as a staff, one of us tip-toed over to the hi-fi to kick off the day officially. We needed the sounds of Peter Wolf Crier , a Minneapolis-based twosome comprised of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen, whose thunderous drumwork you may know from Eau Claire-stalwarts Laarks and Amateur Love. Together, the two make a bulletproof team: Pisano's plainspoken songwriting is right at home next to the holyshit percussive textures Moen's capable of churning. Jagjaguwar is releasing their debut LP next Tuesday, [...]
Cory Brown is a busy guy. He founded Absolutely Kosher Records 12 years ago and has Misra Records to manage at the same time. He is responsible for records from Sunset Rubdown, The Wrens, Xiu Xiu, The Mountain Goats and The Low Lows amongst many other big names on the underground scene. Despite the hectic schedule, he still found time to catch up with us here at A Pocket Full Of Seeds for a bit of chat. . With the debut Laarks album getting a great reception, latest signings [...]

Popfest takes over this weekend. Catch em' while you can!
And I've watched this YouTube video a creepy number of times.

The Laarks- All the Words You Cant Say Right The Laarks are outrageously good to the ears, the drums racket along desperate to play more and every so often another instrument or riff jumps on board and it all kicks off. There are guitars stamping and sprinting all over the place, the vocals crunch at the loud parts and the feedback occasionally cant contain itself. I cant listen to this song without envisioning the band onstage playing through what feels like chorus after chorus, no better feeeling than being at the perfect [...]

Laarks come from Eau Claire, WI, home to a scene that includes Bon Iver, Megafaun, and Volcano Choir. An Exaltation of Laarks shows a more robust and direct sound than the aforementioned, though their dynamic layering of sound implies a similar mindset. The album is ten tracks of cascading synth and guitar textures held up by stalwart drumming and resulting melody. "Look Out!" is one of many highlights, coming with hooky chugging and chopping movement and a somewhat Strokes-ish [...]

If you've been keeping up with my Twitter feed , you may have noticed that I've been incredibly busy as of late. I just can't seem to catch a break with finding time to blog now that I currently work two jobs. Of course, those who have been keeping up have come to expect lengthy periods of inactiveness, at least on my part. Mentioning any kind of worthwhile albums from the past three weeks is just a meaningless task, as you can just take a peek below to see the excellent amount of releases at [...]

Laarks is a indie pop four piece from Eau Claire, WI. The band includes Ian Jacoby (keys, vocals), Kyle Flater (guitar), Zach Hanson (bass), and Brian Moen (drums). The band's sound is defined by Jacoby's soaring pop vocals, Flater's atmospheric angular guitar work, and Hanson's churning bass neatly tied to Moen's explosive and dynamic drumming. Laarks released their debut full length "An Exaltation of Laarks" in March of 2009. An Exaltation of Laarks isn't so much a laudation of the band as it is a summons to experience the exuberance and passion [...]
After a self confessed creative drought, Peter Pisano has channeled a violent outburst of songwriting into a new project, this time with a different Eau Claire expat, Brian Moen of Laarks. The project is called Peter Wolf Crier, and the duo has just released their debut album Inter-Be .

Wausau, WI Laarks All the Words (mp3): The drive around Wisconsin continues as the folk warms, thaws into a puddle, and begins pouring into the front door. This is why March wood is so warped and ripe. It's all the words about how the winter wasn't so bad. And how most people here put on their shorts for a few days and sacrifice their knees to mud and evenings. At Hometown Auto the door mat floats right front of the door. [...]
How did you get into making music, and how did arts education (or lack thereof) affect you and your music? I got into making music pretty early in high school, probably like halfway through my freshman year. We had a fairly good jazz program at school, and I was one of those dorky guys carrying around a trombone at 6:45 in the morning. I went from that to upright bass. I got slightly cooler, but it got even harder to carry an upright at 6:45 in the morning. I went from bass to [...]
