As you can see I haven't had much time to sit down and write these days. The cats I work with over in Cali are crushing it with new clients and it's going to take a complete overhaul of my time management to keep up. In the face of endless work, my high expectations, people depending on me to contribute, lead and execute visions, I can only sit back and appreciate the fact that it's all about music. At this point I actually enjoy pushing the envelop, I'm developing a true love for challenges, a love for war [...]

Tweet Allow me to present a simple yardstick to judge how awesome a song is. If it makes me want to dance to it while sober? Hot damn, you got yourself a winner. Which brings me seamlessly - seamlessly! - to Young Montana?, a.k.a. Jon Pritchard. Jon is from Coventry (Editor's note - This is a town in England about mid-way between Manchester and London) . Stateside readers may not be familiar with the phrase "sent to Coventry", [...]

the only bill callahan album i'm familiar with is his smog release of a river ain't too much to love . and it's just as well, since his recent live album which i've been listening to quite a bit lately - rough travel for a rare thing - features a rather generous selection of songs from that record. the outdoor themes he loves to explore (particularly horses) is usually lost on me, a hopeless city dweller who's only ridden on a horse once in his life. yet, the way he performs the songs, especially live, [...]

Amazing surfing pics taken on Kodachrome here MP3: Labi Siffre - My Song

(from l-r, Alton Ellis, Edwin Starr, Labi Siffre, The Impressions Joe Bataan, Stevie Wonder, the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band Bobby Matos, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Skye 7") (This post began life on Side Dishes and has "evolved" since). I had a strange realization the other week: 2008 might be the first year where I spent more time listening to older music than new music. This hasn't been out of nowhere - it's been a long-term shift but it hit me, when I was trying to come up with the standard [...]

very cool to see dave post that questlove sample montage earlier today, taken from gilles peterson's radio one program back in 2005...thought i'd one up him though, & post the same mix, only broken up...obviously, audiophiles like dg don't require the extra help, but for the rest of us, the separate tracks make the playlist a little easier to follow...i also included full length versions of a few of my favorites from the mix below, so make sure to check those out as well. download: questlove - the lesson.zip [...]

I think there's a general consensus about town that Kanye West's latest album, Graduation , is consistent with the high calibre of his previous two efforts. Although, (in my humble opinion of course) it sags a little in the middle, I am in agreement with the prevailing reaction. But look, we all know that Kanye's work relies heavily on samples (not that I'm complaining like) , so here's a comprehensive breakdown of tracks that make up this great record. MP3: Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight [...]

No I've not disappeared... well I have, but not permanently. Truth be told i've been busy preparing a slamming dj set for a party this weekend. Which has meant i've not been listening to too much other music. As a result i've just sat down to knock out a quick update, and for once nothing immediately smacked me in the face and shouted 'post me'! I did listen to something today that unexpectedly
Comin' atcha first thing every Monday morning, it's The Pony Track, a super-fantastic long distance dedication to BadmintonStamps Collective founding member Aaron "Pony" Child. No fancy links, no clever write-ups, 'cause these awesome songs don't need no splainin'. So c'mon, ride the pony!
