Ólafur Arnalds My love for Icelandic music doesn't stop at Bjork and Sigur Ros , no sir. I have been known to dip into some Hjaltalín , Snorri Helgason , and of course Seabear . But none can compare with the heavily emotional and brilliantly arranged movements of Mr. Ólafur Arnalds himself. Not limiting himself to bare piano and string arrangements, Ólafur took a surprising and almost Aphex Twin-like turn with 2009's Dyad 1909 . Even with albums like Eulogy for Evolution, Found Songs , and [...]

Our friends over at We Listen For You are putting on a glorious show at the MILK Bar in the Haight with dance-rockers The Pass and swing-folk group Marvelous Toy at 9pm tonight. As a fan of the super-fun Marvelous Toy , I can safely say that not only is this an unusual line-up, it's also a well balanced combo of fly-by-wire folk-punk and dance inducing electro-rock. Only $5, so be there and have a good time. [Audio clip: view full post to [...]

Photograph by Chris @ dailybeatz.com Icelandic producer—and player of many instruments—Ólafur Arnalds started his solo career in 2007 with Eulogy for Evolution , and has been making ambient piano and string arrangements ever since. His career as a solo artist is vaguely reminiscent of fellow Icelander Jónsi’s first album, Riceboy Sleeps, in that it contains some of the more beautiful compositions—with the exception of the untouchable Philip Glass—I have heard in quite some time. This track “Fok” is a throwback to his to his 2008 EP, Variations [...]

Tonight was one of the more difficult concert selections in recent memory. This is mostly because it's pretty rare that there are 2 shows here in Detroit that I really want to see on the same night. Tonight's choice was between Matthew Dear at the Blind Pig and Ólafur Arnalds at St. Andrew's Hall. As I'm pretty unfamiliar with Arnalds' music, the clear choice for me was Matthew Dear. However, the Blind Pig is about an hour from my house and I knew the show wouldn't be ending until probably around 1am, and I also know [...]

Last time I covered five albums worth listening to that probably didn't quite make your top 50. It has come to my attention that 'worth another listen' isn't the most apt title - a lot of you may be listening to these artists for the first time. That said, I don't think it is quite worth a change of title, if only because I can't think of anything much better. On to the albums. I feel a little redundant, but Glass Rock is another band I've already covered . As [...]

Ólafur Arnalds Returns to North America For Limited Run of Performances Hosts Ticket Giveaway Competition For Each Upcoming Show "This 23-year-old composer paints a unique fog of fragile melancholy using the tiniest of brushes." - ****SPIN "Keep an eye on Arnalds. He will only increase in importance." - (86%) Filter "mature, modern explorations of lie and its unexected joys, rendering Arnalds increasingly visible." - Paste (Best New Solo Artists of 2010) "Arnalds' boldest and most ambitious take on the form he's pursued so single-mindedly- the robust yet ethereal, mid-tempo tearjerker- [...]
It was another great year in music. Again, like last year, I can't understand those who insists that 'nothing good happened in 20102, annoying hipsters. It was such a diverse year, full of brilliant gems. I won't go into charts and numbering, but here's a rough overview of the stuff I liked this year. Some of the [...]

25. The Books – The Way Out Vastly experimental on all levels and as usual, admirable to no end. The Books did it again with The Way Out , while still a bit more accessible than their last few records, this album dives deep into the art of sampling and multi-instrumentation. It's a mathematical achievement and another masterpiece by this bizarre and humorous group. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] [mp3] The Books - Beautiful People from The Way Out (2010) [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Sigur Rós, Explosions In The Sky "Ólafur Arnalds - You Are the Sun" What's so good? It becomes standard knowledge that when dealing with an Icelandic band, you will never be able to actually pronounce their name, let alone any of their songs. This usual supposition holds true for Ólafur Arnalds. The 23-year-old multi-instrumentalist and producer from Mosfellsbær, Iceland holds an insanely remarkable aptitude for such a young musician.
