I know it's been a while since i last posted but it's been an eventful few weeks. I've had to deal with a lot of overtime at work which has it's good and bad points. Good points - lots of money at the end of the month. Bad points - over tiredness (i can't sleep) and an almost non existent social life between Monday and Friday. Over the past week or two i've also been busy sorting out my new house. Yes, i eventually got a flat. I'm eventually moving out into the big [...]
Photo credit : David Carter Lake Trout is a longtime Baltimore institution. They do not gig nearly often enough as of late, so I was most pleased to have a rare shot at recording one of their shows in mid-January. James has been in the UK working on an upcoming UNKLE release for many months but returned to Baltimore for this excellent set. There is a new Lake Trout release on the horizon as well, with recording sessions scheduled this month, and plans to work with producer Dave [...]

What if you had one chance at the love of your life.... ...and she said play me 3 songs to fall in love with you. What would you play? Here are mine. Lake Trout - "Live on KRFC 88.9 Track 01" MP3 [...]
Tonight in Baltimore is Feet night at the Baltimore Round Robin at Sonar featuring the infamous Dan Deacon with The Death Set, Video Hippos, Blood Baby, Nuclear Power Pants, Double Dagger, DJ Dog Dick, Future Islands, Lizz King, Smart Growth, Height, and Adventure. If you aren't hip to that scene perhaps the Ottobar in Baltimore has the answer with Lake Trout's Live CD Release show. There will also be performances by Jason Dove/Vacation Face and We Read Minds. Down in DC the Red and the Black has a great one with E. Joseph and [...]

Evan Dando (Credit: Artist's Myspace) Gifts are coming to the IA area a few days early. A great lineup of shows this weekend. Quite a few big names are rolling through the area to make your holidays bright. The fighting Gallagher brothers have somehow not killed each other yet and put out a new album, Dig Out Your Soul , in October. Now Oasis is touring the states, hitting the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden Friday and the Patriot Center at GMU Saturday. Will it be a great show or a fist fight [...]
Back To The Water Lake Trout Live Album set to come out for free via new website. Band has been doing various projects, but come back together for a new one.

Photo by Laura Germida If i had to pick the most underrated band of the last decade, I would probably go with Lake Trout . I first got exposed to them near the end of my short raver phase. I was getting bored with the way most electronic music held so rigidly to sub-genre definitions, and I wanted to find people who were taking those sounds, especially the rhythms of Drum 'n' Bass, and applying them in more dynamic music. I stumbled across this Baltimore, Maryland outfit who combined DMB dance music with a free-jazz jamband sort [...]

The best man isn't going to win without your vote, and I'm not hiding who I think the best man is. And Californians: please vote NO on Prop 8. The purpose of the state constitution is not to tell people what they can't do with their personal lives. I know Frank Hoier is an Obama supporter too. He thanked me personally for putting "Jesus Don't Give Tax Breaks to the Rich" in my Time For Change post a couple of weeks ago. I have become a big fan of his [...]

If you're like me, there's nothing a good show can't cure. The only problem is when there is multiple good shows on the same night. That's the case today. In Baltimore, home town heroes Lake Trout take on the Ottobar with Gunwife Gone and Cocos Palme. Down the road at the Talking Head , Judd and Maggie play with Water School, Steve Hefter & Friends of Friends, and Quick Step John. You couldn't ask for a better show at the Black Cat in DC where Hammer No More The Fingers [...]

A few weeks ago, I came up with this stupid idea. What if I pick twelve underground bands that I feel people should know about and do consecutive features on each? After I came up with the initial idea, things started to change around here. Mike (from Austin) left the site for personal reasons, making this a solo show based out of the Baltimore region. After he left, my friend Chris from DC asked if he could step on board and I gladly accepted his offer (introductions will be coming soon). All of a sudden, IA fully covered the entire [...]
Yeah, the rumors are true. Today is my birthday. Thanks to everyone that has wished me well. I was trying to figure out what the hell I wanted to do for my birthday post, then it kind of hit me. I wanted to do a mix of some type. I also have been wanting to do a mix of some of the best local music, so it seemed like a good fit. This mix includes bands from the Baltimore, Washington, and the southcentral Pennsylvania region. This is the whole region that I cover. [...]

I found out that today is one of our Baltimore reader's birthday. I have been wanting to do a mix for awhile now, so I thought that this would be a great opportunity. This mix is basically inspired by some of her favorites and is mostly older material. It's nice, because this is some stuff that I haven't been able to get to much recently and it is a nice break from all of this ACL coverage. Our readers mean everything to us, so Happy Birthday. We wish you the best! [...]

It's Saturday morning and I am half out of it, so let's keep this simple. I post some tunes from a band and you tell me what you think. Let's go with a little Baltimore action and play some Lake Trout . This is another band that I got in to way before I had this site. I saw them several times when I was in college during the late 90's. I rediscovered them a couple of years ago and found that their sound had evolved, definitely for the better. These tracks are off [...]

It was a good show: consistent, as my companion point out. I don't think I'd been to a show with two openers where both of them were good . Bon Savants were good, but no better than that. They drew a pretty decent crowd for a first opener, seeing as they're local, and announced that guitarist Kevin is leaving; their sound edged upward in my estimation for the whole set, which is always a good thing. Lake Trout was the second [...]
