Juicier than Maya Jane Cole’s CDJ wallet or her bulging Traktor-vinyl stack, Leav blesses us with four night-time servings that play with underlying energy and instrumental groove. Ruben Brundell dusts off the phasers and malleable pitch bends for an eloquent feel across ‘Just Want To’ and ‘Let Me.’ Pierre Grall takes us back to 1990s vintage house with ‘You Again,’ and tweaks his four housey-joints home with an uptempo ‘Goes Back’ and a Citizen-styled track called ‘Side’ (which is available as a free download). Finalised by J.Op’s (Jonathan Opasiak) terrace-notions of garage and [...]

Photo by Ben Lindbloom Treefort has begun! Here are a few highlights from DHM's first day at the festival. An in-store spoken word performance by Sage Francis at the Record Exchange preceded even Treefort's official kick off and I can't imagine a better way to have warmed up for the weekend's festivities, i.e., by getting real with some capital "F" Feelings. When Sage speaks it is impossible to move . His presence fills any space and stretched the RX (crowded with humans, too, midway through the set) at the seams. Francis [...]

Oxford’s Pixel Fix have released the clip for their single “Lake”. Moody atmospheric synths play in and out of punchy, technically perfect riffs, leading to an intoxicating mixture of sounds. I’m not sure whether to fade off into a daydream or play air guitar, and this uncertainty in action confirms the fact that I love this. The video (which was shot in Botswana) follows San Bushmen as they enjoy their time with life’s bare essentials. I wish I could be as brave around scorpions as these guys are.

The Lovely Bad Things are SICK! No, really they have some kind of flu or something. The drummer was particularly sweaty but it didn't seem to slow him down one bit. In fact the band was the loudest, fastest and noisiest of the evening. I can't wait to see these guys when they're healthy! They even played Priscilla's special request for "Paperface" by Weezer. If you are headed to SXSW, catch them at the Volstead 3/16th. SF's Cruel Summer kicked off the evening. The 2 women in the [...]

Sharkmuffin, out of Brooklyn, bless b3 with a power pop gem with "The Lake". The track, although wall to wall packed with great melodies and hooks, has a nice overall dynamic to it; building tension and volume into the track's awesome visceral finish. Frontwoman Tarra Thiessen, who's vocal performance on the track is A+, reminds a bit (in a very good way) of Chrissie Hynde. Stay tuned for a 7-inch release of "The Lake" from Sharkmuffin later this month. Sharkmuffin - The Lake Sharkmuffin [...]
Sharkmuffin throw their hat in for best band name. Brooklyn indie rock trio Sharkmuffin have released the exciting new single, "The Lake". Borrowing from Riot Grrrl acts of the past, singer/guitarist Tarra Thiessen takes full command of the song, introducing us to possibly rock's next big frontwoman. Listen [...]

Lake Effect are a duo from Montclair, New Jersey and, over the past few weeks, they've slowly released a series of free downloads, culminating in this - a free stream and download of the complete album, Deaf & Dumb. Merging elements of post-punk, scuzzy electronica and the occasional bubbling-unde r-the-surface antagonism and intensity that made us fall hard for the likes of Cursive and The Dismemberment Plan, Deaf & Dumb is a record that pummels your chest until there's nothing left to do it but let [...]

With the vast expanse of the National Gallery of Victoria’s Great Hall transformed into a live music venue, the gems of Melbourne’s indie scene came out to play with the Gallery’s priceless collection. Featured as part of the Labels Series for Melbourne Music Week, the night showcased the best of the labels’ respective talent. With the neo-90s penchant of Two Bright Lakes , to the innovative electronica from Cutters Records , this was one hell of a variety night. Beat-darlings Teengirl Fantasy opened with [...]

The video for "The Lake" from Brooklyn chamber pop outfit Clare and The Reasons was shot in Berlin, the same city that they wrote and recorded their latest album KR-51 . Director Benn Berbank-Green's use of stop motion adds a surreal touch to a song we described as "sweet, cool surroundings for sonic luxuriating, an ultra-personal production that's like a soft whisper delivered in the middle of a dream -- the chorus alone is worth the price of admission." More on KR-51 and Ms. Muldaur and band [...]
True to form, global phenomenon Benny Benassi was commissioned to produce the legendary Mykonos club Cavo Paradiso's annual Summer compilation for 2012. No room is too big, no synth too loud, no success satisfactory enough for Mr. Benassi, whose storied career has been at the top of the charts since he released Satisfaction in 2002. A [...]

Artist : Echo Lake Title : Wild Peace Label : Slumberland Records Release Date : June 25th BUY IT Looking into the music scene it’s sometimes hard to find which direction everything is heading. To an onlooker, a recent statement made by Claire Boucher’s (AKA Grimes ) could indeed cause some concern. If you’re not aware of [...]
Our rendezvous is a quaint little tea room in the heart of Soho. With an assortment of 25 different teas it takes Linda Jarvis sometime to finally decide what she wants. But we are in no rush as we wait for Thom Hill who seems to have had a heavy night before. The pair make up the back bone of Echo Lake , a dreamy sub-pop band about to launch a debut album and cast their thoughts in the musical tapestry. For the two year history of the band things have gone at a strong pace. With an EP [...]
