December's headline death probably is that of the great Cesária Évora , who emerged from the tiny West African island of Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony. But as a soul fan, percussion maestro Ralph MacDonald is my headline departure of the month. He wrote some stone-cold classics and appeared on an impressive catalogue of soul and fusion albums, including those released in their heyday by Bill Withers, George Benson, Donny Hathaway, Ashford & Simpson, Brothers Johnson, Margie Joseph, Patti Austin, Grover Washington, Maynard Ferguson, The Crusaders, Michael Franks, Eric Gale, Bob James, Herbie Mann, [...]

The synth-wizard, the wizard-look-a-like or just wizard in general, Gavin Russom (Delia Gonzalez & ..., Black Leotard Front, Black Metoric Star, The Crystal Ark, et. al) is venturing to Melbourne once again (recently visiting July 2010 at the Toff and also played live on-stage with LCD Soundsystem when they toured later that year) with details of this current visit at the bottom of this post. If you aren't familiar with the man, who has released work predominantly on the DFA label but has remixes released on Music Man (famous long-running Belgium label), Permanent Vacation, Record Makers, et al, then feel [...]

The Go! Team es el nuevo invitado a colaborar en este proyecto. Uno de sus integrantes, y fundador, Ian Parton, comenta que este mix acerca a las fuentes de inspiración del [...]

Soundtrack music is something that most of us take for granted, but it's vital to the mood and pacing of a film. It also has to do its job while not distracting from the action on the screen, even though in some cases the music might be better than what you're watching. It's not surprising that some of the most talented composers of all time have worked in movies and TV, and a list of the best would have to include Lalo Schifrin. The Argentine-born Schifrin's most familiar piece is probably his iconic theme song from [...]
13th Witness - "Escape From Tomorrow" We continue to be impressed with these shorts from 13th Witness. Very well shot and edited, aaand the man has damn good taste when it comes to the soundtrack. Grab the latest from 13th's ever expanding soundtrack below. DJ Krush - " Intro " (from '94's Strictly Turntablized ) Lalo Schifrin - " Escape From Tomorrow " (from '04's Most Wanted )

The soundtrack-gathering prowess of Quentin Tarantino has been discussed in this space before , and the release of the song list for his forthcoming World War II flick-the spell-check-defying Inglourious Basterds , which premieres at Cannes on Wednesday-is notable for its heavy reliance on the work of famed composer Ennio Morricone, not to mention the excavation of the Giorgio Moroder/David Bowie track from the 1982 film Cat People . Full list of tracks-and the movies the songs were culled from-after the jump. 1. "The Green Leaves of Summer," Dimitri Tiomkin ( [...]
Like other Five Star Monday's there's no theme to today's post apart from the fact that they're all five star songs on my Itunes. The Congos' invincible Congoman, a classic in roots reggae, Ary Barroso's everlasting samba classic Bahia covered by the Argentinian pianist and composer Lalo Schifrin , Dabrye's remix to King Midas Sound , How Many Miles to Korea a freejazz piece from the new album of Austrian HDV Trio and Working Nights ; a lovely nudisco piece from UK's Trus'me . The Congos - Congoman [...]

A man of many talents, Lalo Schifrin covers this 1951 Les Baxter original bringing it to new heights with a touch of exotic funk. Lalo Schifrin: Quiet Village

Happy birthday, Mr. Sims! I tried to get the Baroness, but she was already booked to appear at a John McCain fundraiser. 808 State - In Yer Face (from Ex:El , 1991) - Techno grooves that hit like unto a thing of iron...or a thrown car battery. Lalo Schifrin - Main Titles (from the Enter the Dragon OST , 1973) - Facekicking it up old school .

Today's the 35th anniversary of the Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon , his last completed role before his untimely death less than a week before the movie was released. Lalo Schifrin, probably best known for composing the Mission: Impossible theme, also composed the score for Enter the Dragon . The main theme is campy, funky, and all around awesome, incorporating samples of Bruce Lee's trademark sound effects. Great theme with its fair share of solid covers. Jack Parnell & His Orchestra - Enter the Dragon Ha! [...]
My previous post on Sam Cooke featured a brief aside about drummer Earl Palmer. At the time, I wasn't sure if Palmer manned the kit for "Bring It On Home To Me" ... I since found out it was actually Frank Capp ... but in researching the "did he or didn't he" factotum, I found myself listening to a decent sampling of Palmer's recorded work. Which brings us to today's discussion. Too often, "greatest ever" musician discussions become a roll call of showoffs and shredders. You know who I'm talking about. The [...]
- - - - One regrettable fact that has conveniently been lost over the years amid the legendising of Bruce Lee is just how large a lead his twin brother Anson held over him in their long-running prank wars. - - - - Lalo Schifrin: Enter the Dragon (Main Theme) / MP3 / $$$ [...]
Roy Scheider, who died today (Jan 11) did of course achieve far far more than his most famous role as police chief Brody in Jaws. His adlibbed line " We're gonna need a bigger boat " may be seared into the publics consciousness but he was also Oscar nominated for French Connection & All That Jazz. As a music blog I wouldn't normally cover the passing of actors, no matter how great, but I have to admit to the purely self serving reason of finally having an excuse to post some amazing Jaws related music. Lalo Schifrin's epic [...]

Hugo Montenegro "Montenegro began to branch out after the Hang 'Em High album, recording a diverse array of albums, ranging from show tunes to electronic experiments. Throughout the late '60s and '70s, he continued to score films, including Lady in Cement, The Undefeated, The Wrecking Crew, Tomorrow, and The Ambushers, among many others. He continued composing and recording until his death in 1981." (Oh, and he wrote the theme song for I Dream Of Jeannie ) (allmusic.com) Hugo Montenegro - MacArthur Park [...]

Sometimes the search for the cosmic groove takes me into some serious fusion territory. Just a warning before you dive in, things could get pretty hairy .... Lalo Schifrin, Gypsies (Tabu 1978) I pitched a couple of these down and did some editing on "Pampas" to excise some high-pitched sax that would make Kenny G blanch. Cool album tho, very spacey. Lalo Schifrin - "Rings Around the Moon" [...]

Hey, kids, learn the secrets of the Way of the Open Palm from the comfort of your rumpus room! Never mind all that spiritual or philosophical "mumbo-jumbo." You don't want to waste time mediating like some boring bald dude on a Himalayan mountain peak -- you want to learn to kick some ass right out of the mailing envelope! Hopefully the "simplified" instructions include responses for neutralizing the savage Parental-Fu techniques of "Why the FUCK is there a foot-shaped hole in the paneling?!?" and "Why is your mother's favorite lamp lying in a dozen pieces on the carpet?"
