May 31, 2011 marks the end of another Polaris Music Prize voting year. I'm finalizing my ballot for this year's long list, and decided that instead of a boring sequence of posts about what I'm considering, I'd use the opportunity for another episode of RADiO QBiM to give you a taste of what I'm thinking. (cover star: Katie Stelmanis of Austra ) tracklisting: 01 Austra "Beat And The Pulse" 02 Destroyer "Chinatown" [...]

The album Collider from the Sam Roberts Band ( previously featured here) was released this past Tuesday and it is great! Some of the bros and I are headed up to cottage country for the weekend so I thought it would be appropriate to share some dock rock jams with the rest of the blogosphere world. Collider is a masterfully crafted album from the consistently awesome group members of the Sam Roberts Band, providing us with a clean, rhythmically balanced sound that is best appreciated when listening to the album [...]
Rounder Records is offering a free, legal mp3 of "Longitude," the simultaneously atmospheric and upbeat duet by Sam Roberts Band and Land of Talk's Elizabeth Powell. The song is featured on Sam Roberts Band's new album, Collider. Sam Roberts Band & Elizabeth Powell - Longitude (Mp3)* *mp3 hosted by & posted w/ permission of label [...]

We don't know a ton about Sam Roberts Band , but apparently they're quite the to-do in Quebec, and we really should be better educated. That being said, we do know that we love us some Land Of Talk . So, when it came to our attention that Lizzie Powell had decided to lend vocals to a track from the band's new record Collider , we decided to check it out. In our minds, Lizzie can do no wrong, so we weren't exactly surprised when "Longitude" turned out to [...]

I've only ever been a casual Sam Roberts fan in the past. There's a number of his songs that I've really loved, but I've never been interested enough to check out his full lengths. That may change next week, when Collider , his first new album since 2008 is released. It's being credited to the Sam Roberts Band , and features this poppy little duet with Land of Talk 's Liz Powell: MP3: Sam Roberts Band "Longitude" Facebook: Sam [...]

Way too little time spent on the blog today, but smiling out of the office knowing I could post this. Here's a great collab between Land of Talk 's Liz Powell with Sam Roberts , off Sam's upcoming album "Collider" (out next week on Zoë/Rounder Records). Look for the band on the road starting May 16th, dates below. Check out " Longitude ". (found at Round Letters , thanks Jessica) TOUR DATES (more to be announced): May [...]

Check out this wild duet from Sam Roberts and Land of Talk 's Liz Powell. The song is called Longitude. It's from the upcoming album from Sam Roberts called Collider which drops on May 10th. Guessing that both are Montrealers, why wouldn't Sam want to have her contribute on the album. It's a good rocking song, has that BSS sound to it. Have a listen/download to Longitude .
Sick of Sasquatch? Bored with Bumbershoot? Just want more more more? Here's North of Northwest's second annual guide to Canadian summer music festivals. Dawson City Music Festival July 15-17, Dawson City, Yukon I've never heard DCMF described as anything but an amazing experience, a weekend of performances, creativity, and collaboration in a place whose very name conjures [...]

Warner Bros. Or at least we are the first batch of acts officially announced on Tuesday for this year's NXNE festival, running June 16 through 19 around Toronto. It's certainly not all of them, but there's some moderate to big names in there and perhaps most key, the headliners for the free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square that have become the centrepiece of the fest have been revealed. While there's no one quite of the stature of last year's Saturday night marquee of Iggy & The Stooges , New [...]
With most multi-day passes hovering around $200, festival going definitely isn't cheap. Add in airfare, gear, hotel/camping costs, plus the price of 4-days worth of chicken pita, and attending more than one summer extravaganza seems daunting if not impossible. So North By Northeast 's (NXNE) $50 5-day 'Music' wristbands and $150 early bird 'Priority Pass' seem like a steal, considering the festival boasts 600 international bands performing across 50 venues in beautiful Toronto. Pattered after Austin's South By Southwest, NXNE is comprised of an interactive, film, and music segment, with various workshops, panels, and activities taking place over [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Warner Bros. Devo , Stars , Descendents and the Pharcyde will be hitting Toronto June 13-19 for the city's massive North By Northeast festival. According to a press release today, Devo will perform a free outdoor show at Yonge-Dundas Square on a bill with '80s Canadian rock band Men Without Hats. The concert is being presented by AOL. [...]

So maybe the mix below isn't quite as tropical-themed as depicted above, but it certainly does get us ready for spring. What else did you expect, a picture of pussy willows ??? MUF takes its mixes seriously, and we firmly believe that if you crank these songs up, whether it be in your car or in your livingroom, flowers will sprout out of nowhere. That's how seriously Springtime this mix is. In fact, you might even see the Easter Bunny if you play them loud enough. With the warming weather on the way, there's no doubt that [...]

Frank Yang Someday, possibly not too far in the future, I will have to either admit that Canadian Musicfest begins in earnest on Wednesday nights now, and not Thursdays as it has in the past, or begin ignoring it completely. It's currently even odds as to which it'll be. But either way, the 2011 edition started for me on Thursday evening at Lee's Palace, which would be my only stop for the evening. Hey, it's not my fault that the programmers put together a bill worth staying put for. Though it is [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Saddle Creek Canadian music groups Land of Talk (pictured) and Hollerado brought very different energies to Canadian Music Week (CMW) on Thursday night. Broadcasting to satellite radio, live from Toronto's Opera House, the two rock bands performed with enthusiasm, quick wit and precision -- Hollerado opting for the crazy stage antics and Land of Talk going for a more soothing vibe. [...]

It was a wonderful and packed night at Mavericks. Land of Talk put on an amazing show in Ottawa. It's been awhile since Liz Powell played a Ottawa show in support of the album Cloak and Cipher ( Ranked #7 in the Best of 2010 Canadian albums ). Very surprised that it was packed and sold out. Alot of young and new people who just heard of Land Of Talk wanted a glance to see the live show. Glad to hear some tracks from [...]
Photo by Anya Shiller It's indie rock week on LOOSE L!PS, and it's about time. I finally found some new-ish songs that I'm crazy over and itching to share with the world. Capped off yesterday by Russ' excellent post on the more-excellent-still Bloom, today I continue with an upbeat rock song with an irresistible hook, Land of Talk's Swift Coin. Land of Talk is a 3-piece band out of Montreal,

Sea Of Bees is the cutesy moniker of Julie Ann Baenziger, a diligent, if somewhat downcast troubadour of sorts whose woozy acoustic despondence is sweeter than a Crunchie dripping in Gales Squeezy Honey. Sea Of Bees got lodged in our teeth late last year when she released an EP that contained the bumbling, trundling beaut that was The Woods and although her first full-length is devoid of said track, there's plenty more golden nuggets where that one came from… Opener Gnomes exhibits Baenziger's infantile coo over wily Americana particularly evocative of wearied Canadian darlings Land Of [...]

Land of Talk - May You Never ( buy ) It opens like most tracks by The Knife, with an electronic flourish probably borrowed from an upgrade sequence of a video game. The piano lines are reserved and Lizzie Powell's vocal sounds like it is sung from the bottom of a well. But once "May You Never" opens up it's really just an indie rock song. The guitar theme is carried by propelling drums and the song paces like a movie; it ebbs and flows with the narrative and [...]
