I'm not a fan of this show, but has great music selections. Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News There will be no shortage of acts to check out at this year's Canadian Music Fest, which takes place March 9-13 in Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week . Announced today, the stellar lineup includes Kurt Vile , Dinosaur Jr .'s J Mascis , Janelle Monáe, Melissa Etheridge and Good Charlotte . And, naturally, the Canadian contingent is top-tier, with performances by Shad [...]

jmonae.com Back in mid-December , I pointed out that the website for the 2011 edition of Canadian Musicfest had gone live with the first batch of showcasing artists for the festival. And while there was enough in that initial list to get my attention, in the last couple of weeks the information available has really ramped up and, methinks, another round-up of acts who will be filling Toronto clubs from March 9 to 13 is in order. Perhaps most exciting is the return of cyber-soul firecracker Janelle Monáe , though if [...]

Myspace Toronto's venerable Wavelength might have closed out their weekly showcase series last year in favour of intermittent events throughout the year, but they've not given up their tradition of throwing a killer birthday party or five. As they've done in years past, Wavelength Eleven (or event #415 if you're keeping track) will commandeer venues around this city from February 16 through 20 and fill them with many of the finest acts the city and outlying regions have to offer, spanning all styles and genres, frequently on the same bill. Okay, here's how it works: We each prepped a list of the 32 best songs of the year, and seeded them into a 64-track Tournament Bracket. We wrote a short descriptor of each track (we are limiting ourselves to 140 characters, in honor of the Tweet's natural brevity) and will attach a copy of each track to the [Read Full Post...]

Rather than having a semantic argument about whether 2009 or 2010 was the end of the last decade, Ca Va Cool yet again brings you its top albums of the year. Aside from being the year that brought us the hit motion picture Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , the Chicago Blackhawks' Stanley Cup win, and Julian Assange's rise to power, 2010 brought a new batch of music to listen to. Through our patented, painstaking, super-secret process, we have separated the wheat from the chaff to bring you twenty of this year's finest albums (and Sufjan Stevens). [...]

Looking at some "best of" lists this year, it seems as though some feel that 2010 hasn't been spectacular for music. Personally, I feel that it has been a really strong year that yielded some albums that will be in my "favourites" section for years to come. I had a tough time, but here are my favourite 15 albums of 2010 . I'm still a little iffy on the ordering, save for #1-3, and had difficulty narrowing it down to my top 15, so I've included honourable mentions at the bottom! [...]
Amanda and I have each prepped our lists of the 32 best songs of the year, as defined by our impeccable tastes. Instead of blathering on and on and forcing you to come back each day to see the subsequent portions of the list, we are taking the best annual contest currently in existence (NCAA [Read Full Post...]

My first flavor of Wye Oak was their beautiful tune "I Hope You Die" (listen here ), a tune that was soft and melodic, a stark contrast to its brooding title. And while I definitely missed the mark on checking out more of their tunes, I recently heard "Civilian" and was a little bit blown away. Mostly because I didn't really know that this Baltimore duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack had this much electricity in them. Perhaps that's a consequence of me not diving into all of their music, but I definitely [...]

I'm currently finishing another little year-end list for 1146 miles and I came across this song. It's been covered by a lot of the online publications and blogs it seems, but it was a pleasant surprise to me as I listened to it for the first time. Hopefully, you can experience the same thing as I did, listening to it for the first time. That's if you haven't heard it yet. If you have, enjoy it again. (photo: John Carey - fiftyfootshadows.net) So that's 2010 done. I know it's a cliché, but the year really has flown by. When I sat down to boil the last 12 months down to a list of 10 essential albums I found the process tricky again this year. There were some great records by old favourites (like Rufus Wainwright) and new (like Neil Young) and former list-makers (like The Wilderness of Manitoba), but they weren't the kind of album that I went back to listen to very often; technically marvelous for sure, but not your [...]
Frank Yang Well this was certainly a better year than last year, on pretty much every level. Of course, it would have required something on the scale of low-yield nuclear detonation in my bathtub - while I was in it - for it to have been worse, but I'll take it. Musically, it was actually something of a banner year with what seemed like every active artist that I liked not only putting out new records, but good to great records. More hiatuses ended than started and despite intending to slow down the [...]

Here is another installment of what to expect on the Best of 2010 list. This time being "Overall". I don't just focus on Canadian music, I do check out stuff from the USA and the UK. Overall being albums outside of Canada that was released in 2010. As before in the " Canadian albums of 2010 " no albums that was released in late 2009. There will be some Canadian albums that made a splash outside of Canada crossing over into this list. I really need your help/input on which albums from the USA, [...]

Montreal (despite the recent ' chill factor ') is always a great place to be. Here's a roundup of some of best stuff going on - Hopefully some of you had the pleasure of catching Sean Nicholas Savage's album release show, to which I certainly did. D'Eon and Silly Kissers, who are undoubtedly some of Montreal's best local bands, opened the show. Unfortunately, I missed them both. If past experience is any gauge in these situations, I'd say they were both probably a helluva good time. D'Eon has a new 123 called [...]

Their album Cloak and Sipher came out in August and feature Patric Watson, as well as members of Stars, Wintersleep, Besnard Lakes, Arcade Fire. In Swift Coin you hear Elizabeth Powell's smooth vocals contrasting with crashes, rumbles and exclamations of excitement in the guitar and percussion. Land of Talk- Swift Coin OFFICIAL WEBSITE | [...]
