I've only been to SXSW once. I saw some pretty cool shows, drank tons of Lone Star beer and margaritas. Ate BBQ, stole beer from a convenience store, almost got a tattoo from a mexican midget, saw Harry Shearer at the PASTE party, broke a couple traffic laws and came ...

In my mind I may have already typecast Langhorne Slim's music as crazed-one-man-band-rebel-folk -blues. So it was a slight surprise to hear songs from his new record that are fleshed out with cello, piano and pop melodies I wasn't even sure he was capable of. Langhorne has one of those horrible major label stories I'm sure. He was signed by V2 in a move that could only be called mystifying. Sure, it was clear he was a major talent, but it was also clear that this was not a guy that they could change and [...]

With thousands of bands descending upon Austin, March 12th through the 16th, it's helpful that the festival's official website offers up, along with the artist's bio, an [...]

This song keeps looping in my head tonight. I just finished watching Waitress which was more complex than I had thought, not just about baking pastries in a small town. Keri Russell plays a waitress with heart in a small town who bakes amazing pies. Her husband doesn't support her dreams, the joy she finds in creating something small and sweet that makes people smile and brings joy into their day. As her belly grows with pregnancy, something begins to ferment and rise within her as she flirts with the ideas of other roads [...]

Todays mixtape consists entirely of songs from the Daytrotter.com sessions. Operating out of Rock Island, Ill., Daytrotter is a treasure trove of free music from some of todays brightest indie musicians. Each session consists of 4-5 songs recorded live in-studio. Huge thanks to Sean Moeller for giving the okay on this and for running what very well might be the best website ever. If you like what you hear, please visit the Daytrotter Archives to download more songs from these artists and explore some more great music. [...]

Hello everyone. I am very happy. Because as of tomorrow I am going on holidays for 3 weeks and my first destination is pictured above. Portland, Oregon. I first visited there in 2005 and quickly fell in love with the place. Safe, extremely friendly, environmentally sound, community minded, surrounded by greenery and mountains, great music, cool shopping, etc, etc. Luckily while I am there I will attend the Pickathon Music Festival for one day where I will catch Horse Feathers and Langhorne Slim , amongst others. Also I will see Bishop Allen and [...]

Thanks to the Paste Magazine review section I got my hands on the "Engine EP" by Langhorne Slim and I have been thoroughly enjoying this gem for the past few days. I'm not a Langhorne virgin, but I am rather new to his particular brand of folk/alt-country. I first heard him when he stopped by Daytrotter and recorded this set for them. I really enjoyed the music but for some reason or another I never followed through until this weekend. When I started listening to his actual recorded stuff [...]
Daytrotter just keeps on delivering the goods, like Natalie Woods. The Casiotone session and Bonnie “Prince†Billy sessions were great, and now Langhorne Slim graces them with his presence. Aside from having a cool moniker and a bowler hat/suit style, Langhorne Slim channels the folk and blues from years gone by (which is amazing when you consider he’s only lived a few himself). He creates characters laced with honesty, anger and emotion and mixes foot stomping blues, bluegrass and gentle strummed folk melodies delivered with the [...]

Preshow news: In case there’s a few of you who actually read what I write, who actually like my writing, go and check out my posts at The Blog Tribunal. This week, I wrote about a change of heart that may soon affect Berkeleyplace. Before that, I wrote about why the critics of Survivor are the real racists. The Blog Tribunal is a place where we can write more thoughtful, extended pieces. Please, if you do go by there, let me know what you think! [...]

Today's edition of Easy Rockin Sunday begins with Louisiana singer-songwriter Dan Reeder and his ode to suds, I Drink Beer. Off of his latest, Sweetheart, which came out this past September, it's a sweet little strummer of a song. How can you not like a song with a line like "I drink beer to improve my mind/end the war/help mankind." Dan Reeder - I Drink Beer.mp3 I came across the Trainwreck Riders quite accidentally the other night. [...]
Langhorne is an honest troubadour, or maybe that's not the word. He's not polished enough to be a troubadour. He's a roadside minstrel, with tales of love and sorrow and a smile to brighten your day. His songs are exuberant but with just the right amount of plaintive emotion that betrays their tone to display their message. To really enjoy Slim's music though is to see him in a live setting. He's definitely one of those artists who can't translate his affable character to tape. The Engine EP , released in expectation of a full album to be released [...]
