Whether it's Radiohead, Justice or Kanye West, lots of artists have used children's choirs in their music and it can have the effect of sounding uplifting, cute, anthemic or just plain creepy. The Langley Schools Music Project album, Innocence & Despair showed that's even possible to maintain the concept for an entire album and still be fascinating. Sigur Rós are the latest to use a children's choir in their gorgeous track "Varúð" (translation: "Caution") from their upcoming sixth LP, Valtari , and it inspired me to make a mix of some of my [...]

On Monday evening, I watched Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth for the first time. This 1976 film was the fourth that Roeg directed and I had already seen and enjoyed his previous three: Performance (co-directed with Donald Cammell), Walkabout and, particularly, Don't Look Now . Another reason I wanted to see the film was because it features David Bowie in the titular role of Thomas Newton. Newton is an alien on a mission to bring water back to his dying planet. Like Roeg's previous films, it's never completely [...]

Magic Kids - Hey Boy [Stream] About time we had a proper children's choir around here again. Imagine the The Langley Schools Music Project hooking up with the Beach Boys with mr Phil Spector at the helm. Chances are you end up pretty close to the Magic Kids - a happy-go-lucky sunshine pop combo from Memphis, Tennessee, featuring members of The Barbaras and Girls of the Gravitron . Pure pop bliss!
Previously: Part 1 Sometimes kids have been enlisted to sing words that are perfectly suited to their youthful status, such as on "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, where they join in on the schoolyard chant, "No more pencils no more books/ no more teacher's dirty looks." The Smiths go for a similar but darker effect in "Panic," as the kids echo Morrissey in his mournful "Hang the DJ!" chant. The sound of the schoolyard, with those disembodied, joyful voices rising and falling, was all Belle & Sebastian needed to lend an instantly evocative [...]
i've been pretty swamped with stuff the last couple of days, and that's somehow found its way to making my waking moments full of dread, or at least overwhelmed by the things i need to get done. but this morning, i woke up feeling quite fine, humming this tune in my head, and feeling much better, really. there's no purer version of the song - "i'm into something good" originally by herman's hermits - than that captured on a 2-track recorder in 1976 by elementary school music teacher hans fenger, who coordinated the langley schools music project by assembling a [...]

Langley Schools Music Project - Sweet Caroline Miss Rainbow here is still in a state of excitement after seeing Neil Diamond at the O2 on Tuesday! Yep, I woz there watching Neil resplendent in a glittery black shirt struck his funky stuff. Believe me, for a man old enough for a freedom pass, he sure can strut. He had it all going on, key changes, brass section and a moving stage. 15 thousand people singing 'I Am I said' and 'Forever in Blue Jeans' was heavenly. Now [...]

I just read on the CBC Radio 3 comments board that those shows in Halifax would be held at elementary schools and not be open to the public, however "they might, just might, do a recording with CBC in Halifax - and that would likely be a public event." We'll keep our fingers crossed for that. By request: Langley Schools Music Project - Desperado [originally by The Eagles] Unlike the other Langley Schools covers which had choirs of up to 60 vocalists, this is simply a remarkable solo performance by 9-year-old Sheila Behman accompanied [...]
Sweet gig going on tonight... actually considering the time zone difference it's probably over. But anyway, way out east in a small community outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia choir students from the Dutch Settlement Elementary School, Musquodoboit Valley Education Center, and Upper Musquodoboit Consolidated School put on a concert called Canada Rocks . This ain't no Kidz Bop. The choirs performed songs by Feist, Joel Plaskett, Shotgun Jimmie, Julie Doiron, AC Newman, Islands, K-OS, Wintersleep and Patrick Watson. The event organized by 26-year-old music teacher Jarred Gates also had Shotgun Jimmie and [...]
As some of you may know by now, this weekend marks the first annual Record Store Day . Here in Columbus, pretty much every record store I know of is having some kind of sale or something or other, and even in Cincinnati (where I'll be this weekend) has some choice spots. Emily and I (and my future Brother-in-Law, Adam) will be visiting Everybody's Records in Cincinnati, but I'm definitely sad that I'll be missing some great sales/in-stores here in Columbus. I'll try to break some of the haps for you here: [...]
It's now the seventh day of UnderCover Week here at ThaBombShelter, and I'm going to spend tonight posting some of my favorite cover songs of all time. I couldn't find the originals to some of them, but I'm going to post them anyway, dammit. Also, you may notice that some of them are reposts from earlier in the week, but I don't care, they're good enough to warrant another mention. Enjoy! "54-46 Was My Number" Toots and the Maytals "54-46-Ball And Chain" Sublime This was [...]

Well, with seven days to post covers, sometimes you have to do a little combining. As such, tonight, we've got covers and originals from two of my favorite artists, Radiohead and David Bowie. So sit back, get some egg nog and a slice of fruitcake and enjoy the tunes! "Creep" Radiohead "Creep" Damien Rice Damien Rice has some amazing pipes, and while he's not quite as phenomenal as Thom Yorke, he at least hits the notes he has to, even if he's not quite as paranoid [...]
Yup I realize this is ages and ages late, but I haven't posted the playlists for the August 28 OR September 4 shows yet - mostly because I've been neck-deep in Next Big Nashville previewing and interviewing, and then the craziness of NBN itself. Time to play catch-up. First up, the August 28 show was the Summer of Guest DJs Finale , so I invited a whole crew in to hang out for the two hours. Jon Rogers from Hotpipes , Dave Paulson from [...]

Ahhh Labor Day, are you here already? I guess it's time put away all my white outfits. Err, wait. I don't actually OWN any white outfits. Hmmm, so I guess I'm safe then. When I was in school we usually looked at Labor Day with dread. After all, if it was Labor Day Weekend then summer was coming to an end and school was right around the corner (when you go to school in a small town and have 'unusual' tastes in film, music & literature, you don't really look forward to going back). Well, school is long [...]

We only danced for a minute or two But then she stuck close to me the whole night through Can I be fallin' in love She's everything I've been dreamin' of I walked her home and she held my hand I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could (I asked to see her and she told me I could) Somethin' tells me I'm into something good - Herman's Hermits ( lyrics ) [...]
