Yesterday Sims announced the lineup for the show he curated during Doomtree Blowout week. On Sunday December 4, he will be performing at 7th St Entry with Brother Ali, Astronautalis, and One Be Lo. This is awesome. In light of the news, I wanted to share with you One Be Lo's latest album, LABOR . One Be Lo has been laying low lately, as we haven't heard much from the talented Michigan rapper since his 2007 album The REBIRTH . Well, he's back and still in fine form. Check the album out below, and purchase it [...]

LABOR by One Be Lo L.A.B.O.R. is arguably OneBeLo's most cohesive album yet. An acronym for Language Arts Based On Reality and another play on the birth concept before B.A.B.Y., the disc sees Lo cleverly using a theme of animals and occupations to metaphorically convey an assortment of issues, storylines and displays of lyricism. "Pigs" speaks on corrupt law enforcement, "Ox Y Moron" shows the highs and lows of upgrading your bank account, and "The G.O.A.T." sees him examining the ins and outs of peoples' interpretations of God, or "the greatest of all time." [...]

Toronto – Earlier this week singer-songwriter Mike Evin played to a small but appreciative crowd at Kensington Market's Bread & Circus. The Montreal-born and sometimes Toronto-based musician has just moved back to the big city. He brought an upbeat attitude to his set, playing songs from both the archives and his latest album "Do You Feel The World?" Opening for Mike was Toronto-based Kristen Cudmore of Language Arts . Hailing from Nova Scotia, Kristen alternated between nylon-string & electric guitars, a synth, and a [...]

It was a nice Wednesday August 3, 2011 evening at the Raw Sugar Cafe . Went to see a solo performances of: Octoberman Language-Arts I finally got to Language-Arts live. This time it was just Kristen going solo. Her music was really great with the indie art pop music. Marc of [...]

There's a good lookin' hip hop show this Friday at the Vera Project that we think you should check out if you know what's good for you. Topping both the bill and reasons you should go is the venerable One Be Lo; one half of the influential conscious rap duo Binary Star, who's also become [...]

Over the days leading up to this No Shame event at The Garrison featuring, amongst others, Vancouver's Language-Arts , I've been happily immersing myself in their sophomore album, Where Were You In The Wild? . In this internet age, originality is a concept becoming more and more (understandably) difficult to come by, and the challenge is whether or not an artist can present some new ideas while still remaining melodious and enjoyable. The constant rotation of this album proved to me that they are well trained when it comes to doing so [...]

After a couple of months of relatively casual concert going action, it looks like the month of March is going to be a busy one for me, concert-wise. If you couple that with the fact that life is also going to be quite busy life-wise, than you're going to be looking at a fairly exhausted guy come months end. For the most part however, it'll be worth it, since the month promises not to leave me wanting in terms of high quality shows, so here are a few picks if you're looking for something to do. For more [...]
Equal parts folk and hip hop, Vancouver's Langauge Arts have coined a genre all their own. The "pixie rap" sound could charm even the most harden thug into laying down his Glock. Check out their Myspace for samples from the sophomore album. The groups rolls into southern Ontario for a bunch of shows, including NXNE on March 12th. Other dates include: Toronto, The Garrison, Mar 5 Guelph, Jimmy

Before I go and review alot of non Canadian albums that is out this week. Here is one that is Canadian. I was fortunate enough to get a chance to listen to Language-Arts. They are a band that is sometimes played on CBC Radio 3. This band hails from Vancouver and the members consist of: Kristen Cudmore Gregor Phillips Their music (on Myspace ) classifies them as indie-rock, obscure hip-hop and chamber pop. This album has this chirpy happiness sound to them. That sense of [...]

A grand statement to start the post: "Terrible Yellow Eyes is a wonderful website." Music to establish the right mood before elaborating: Jams Dean - Where the Wild Jams Are Language-Arts - Where Were You in the Wild? Explanation: Terrible Yellow Eyes is a project initiated by Cory Godbey in an attempt to pay tribute to one of his favourite artists, Maurice Sendak. If you [...]

veinte canciones del año pasado que podría haber colgado en el blog, de no haberme dejado vencer por la pereza. bachelorette : mindwarp (my electric family) brilliant colors : absolutely anything (introducing) camera obscura : french navy (my maudlin career) christy & emily : lover's talk (superstition) cryptacize : blue tears (mythomania) [...]
More quality Canadian content coming from the west coast today, this time via the indie/alt-rock duo Kristen Cudmore and Gregor Phillips; otherwise known as Language Arts. Originally from the other Canadian coast, Nova Scotia (I suppose we have a northern coast as well), the duo's biography describes their latest album as "celebrating obscurities and word entanglements with poetic poise, paired with an alt-rock foundation yet fleshed out with classical instrumentation"; that's exactly how I described them to a friend of mine today oddly enough. Today's song is the title track from the band's 2009 sophomore full-length release "Where Were [...]

~ Big Spider's Back - "Perfect Machine" ~ A bit of an odd song, with lo-fi mixed with heavy electronics. Grows in that slow kind of way that make you notice the little things, even though it's a very repetitive song, both musically as lyrically. Like I said, a bit odd perhaps but very, very good. From the debut EP Warped . ~ Language-Arts - "White Socks in Birkenstocks" ~ A quirky little tune that I just love. The singer has cute voice that suits perfectly to [...]

Language-Arts ' 2007 debut, the bafflingly-titled "" , was a mixed bag. A stylistic hodgepodge that ranged from folk to hip-hop to jazz, it contained one song that stood clearly out above the rest: "Running at Sunset in a Moonlit Town" was haunting chamber pop, its droning guitars and electric piano flourishes more effective than any amount of kitschy genre-mashing. The band appears to have followed the blueprint of that song when crafting its second album, and the result is a much more consistent and enjoyable effort. Where Were You In the Wild? is [...]

"where were you in the wild?", fragt die truppe language arts . keine ahnung, antworte ich, wie ich zunächst ebenso ratlos dem output der band aus east vancouver gegenüberstehe. das ende oktober erscheinende gleichnamige album hat alles, was mir zauberhaft und glühend verehrt entgegenkommt. diese lässige folknote, ohne in tradition zu verharren, den pop, der dich beschwingter durch den alltag ziehen lässt, die memorable idee, das unsteife in der harmonie und doch manch schlanken dreher beinhaltend. sängerin kristen cudmore hat zudem eine stimme, der das kieksige joanna newsoms genauso innewohnt wie [...]

With its genre-defying qualities, Vancouver's Language-Arts' sophomore release "Where Were You in the Wild?" is expected to turn ears to a new side to indie rock; celebrating obscurities and word entanglements with poetic poise, paired with an alt-rock foundation yet fleshed out with classical instrumentation. Confused? Don't be- it all comes about very naturally, aided in part by Cudmore's vast reserve of words and ideas, delivered with a "clarion-like voice". "Where Were You in the Wild?" is Language-Arts' full length follow up to 2007's self titled debut as well as their now out of print 2008 [...]
