With Gotye 's unstoppable "Somebody That I Used To Know" sitting pretty at #1, and Adelaide-born singer Sia in close pursuit with her Flo Rida collaboration "Wild Ones" , the Billboard Hot 100 has a distinctly Australian flavor these days. If you scan even farther down the list you'll also find model-turned-DJ-turned-dance diva Havana Brown making a rapid ascent with her catchy club anthem "We Run The Night" . Not since the 1980s have Australian bands had such [...]

There are more and more artists trying to emulate the classic Jazz and Blues singers, which is fantastic but making yourself stick out is something that is far from easy. Lanie Lane, an Aussie florist turned singer, does a very good job standing out in the crowd, or should I say attracting a crowd. I am disappointed I didn't get to see her perform at SXSW while I was there, but according to reviews Lanie had no problem hustling in all the eager music fans with her powerful vocals and undeniable classic style. The whole feel of this [...]

Golden Plains Sixxx took place over the weekend at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre in Victoria. It's the relaxed festival that hosts a mixed bag of artists on one stage over a long weekend. It has become a real highlight for me not just because it winds up the summer music season but because it is a really bloody good festival. From kind and very beautiful people to incredibly diverse and talented artists, good food and great camping areas to plenty of amenities and fantastic staff, Golden Plains has it figured out. I covered a bunch of the oz bands and [...]

Well I know what my plans are for Friday, March 16th. They involve the recording artists of Third Man Records and, of course, its CEO, Jack White. White and other Third Man artists including his ex-wife Karen Elson, The Black Belles, Pujol, Lanie Lane and artists including White Rabbits, Reggie Watts and more will take the stage starting at 7:30 pm at The Stage in Austin, TX for a Third Man showcase that will probably be one of the highlights of the entire week. Furthermore, Third Man's Rolling Record Store will [...]
Midweek madness: ► The Smashing Pumpkins visit the Wiltern, promising to preview some material off their forthcoming album "Oceania" (due in 2012). Fancy Space People (featuring Don Bolles) and Light FM open. ► Blondie plays Club Nokia behind their new album "Panic of Girls," and L.A. trio Nico Vega opens. ► Devotchka does a cozy show at the Bootleg Theater, with Mini Mansions supporting. ► Peter Bjorn & John wind up a string of SoCal dates with a show at the El Rey Theatre, with Hanni [...]
If the late Amy Winehouse had been influenced by Wanda Jackson and rockabilly instead of soul and jazz, she might have turned out to be a fast-moving rock 'n' roller along the lines of Australia's Lanie Lane (pronounced "Lanny"). Her smokey yet sassy sound has earned her tour spots with artists such as Justin Townes Earle and L.A.'s own Fitz & the Tantrums. Early singles such as "What Do I Do" also hints at some jazz influences, but it's tunes such as "Ain't Hungry" on her recent Jack White-produced 7-inch single (via Third Man Records) that relays her [...]

Photos by the amazing Elize Strydom Maybe it will all change next year, when Steve Aoki is confirmed to play the festival. But as it stands, Changing Lanes has one of the lowest Southern Cross tattoo counts of all the festivals on the Sydney music calendar. While there was a noticeable absence of shirtless bogans and 18 year old girls group dressing as sexy nurses, it did register a 9.3 on the Hipster Scale. It was definitely a much more ironic facial hair, vintage clothing affair. In it's second year, at [...]

Hot on the heels of the U.S. release of her Jack White produced 7" inch single on Third Man Records which includes the fuzz bass stomp of "Ain't Hungry" (fuzz bass handled expertly by White himself) and a wailing waltzing lament to withheld love, "My Man," Australian songstress Lanie Lane (pronounced "Lanny") has announced a run of select U.S. dates this Fall. The short tour, which will see Ms. Lane play New York, Los Angeles, and Boston, is a sneak peek at what is sure to be one of the hottest new [...]

Lanie Lane - “Ain’t Hungry” (ft. Jack White) Jack White injected plenty of grit into the production of this new brassy rockabilly-blues number from Australian singer-songwriter Lanie Lane, amping up the moody ’50s stomp previewed on “What Do I do” — a single from her forthcoming To The Horses LP — with raw, fuzzed-out bass, insistent drums, and a few of his trademark piercing guitar riffs . You can stream “Ain’t Hungry,” half of Lane’s new Blue Series 45 for Third Man Records, above, and pick it [...]

Her music is a mix of blues, country, rockabilly, soul and folk, and the few tracks she has available have left me in anticipation of her album being released in October. She swung by the studio for some light conversation and a live performance. Lanie Lane Announces Jack White-Produced Single Reconvening with the Raconteurs, teaming up with Stephen Colbert, throwing a divorce party , and dabbling in hip-hop hasn’t slowed down Jack White’s one-off Blue Series for Third Man Records this summer, as the next White-produced 7” single arrives on August 23 featuring two original songs — “Ain’t Hungry” and “My Man” — by Australian singer Lanie Lane. “I was so inspired by the whole process and by how raw and instinctively everything happened,” said Lane in [...]

Here's a new track from the Australian pop singer Lanie Lane . It's probably wrong to call her pop, because her sound is more a throwback to the 302s, 402s, or 502s, and back then "pop" had a completely different meaning. I just don't know what else to call it. It has elements of jazz and blues, but I guess she says it best when she describes it as "saucy" and "swampy". However you want to describe it, it's a cool sound. Listen/download below. Thought I would share my new track "Like Me Meaner" with [...]

Australian siren Lanie Lane 's debut single, "What Do I Do" has a soulful, old-time jazzy feel to it. This is no surprise when confronted with her influences - all the truly powerful early jazz singers are there, from Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday to the masterful Nina Simone. Within "What Do I Do" is a hodgepodge of classic sounds, from 50s pop to 30s jazz and blues. Were Lane to have it, she'd probably wander back to the underbelly of those eras - the places where art thrived and mystery hid [...]

Meet Lanie Lane , an artist from Sydney, Australia who's talent is nowhere better illustrated than on her debut single, a swampy blues number called What Do I Do . An ode to the frustrations of the daily grind and the necessary evils of dead end jobs supporting loftier ambitions. Part chant, part stomp, full-time heavyweight introduction to an artist set to become a star. MP3: What Do I Do by Lanie Lane

Love. Lanie Lane is a pop artist out of Sydney, Australia and this is her debut single. Her sound has a vintage influence but a crispy, fresh feel to it. She might have a sweet voice like Erykah Badu, but this one clanks like a Tom Waits record. Keep up with Lanie at her Myspace . The spirit of Muddy Waters inhabiting Doris Day. The Andrews Sisters in the year 2010. Erykah Badu singing to herself as she does the housework. Pinpointing exactly where Lanie Lane is coming from musically is not easy, but a [...]
