Lanterns on the Lake and their songs pretty much encapsulate why we love writing a music blog. Starting with that point of early discovery (in our case back in January 2010 ) and then following the bands progression, with a number of blog posts, falling deeper and deeper in love with their music. Then an album is released and it fully lives up to expectations (in this case we named Gracious Tide Take Me Home as our 5th favourite of 2011). For us this is what Breaking More Waves and some of its peer group blogs [...]

Good day for music, as I listen to the new single from Lanterns On The Lake , taken from their new album Until The Colours Run due later this year on Bella Union. The post Video: "Another Tale From Another English Town" by Lanterns On The Lake appeared first on Indie Music Filter .

Another Tale From An English Town heralds the return of the dreamy, haunting folk of Lanterns On The Lake and is taken from their forthcoming new album Until The Colours Run , that will see a release via Bella Union . It is typically beautiful, cinematic and orchestral, with strings and vocals that rise and fall as though they were swelling waves, but the lyrics are sharper than previously, with more bite, and reflect the hard times with a nod to harder ones still to come. It is majestic stuff. [...]

Facebook / lotl.tumblr.com It's almost three years since I first featured Lanterns On The Lake here, three years in which the cinematic band from the North East have become one of my most listened to artists with a genuinely gorgeous album Gracious Tide, Take Me Home and some stunning live performances which never failed to bring goosebumps to me time and time again. Their long-awaited return happened late last week with the release of a video for new single "Another Tale From Another English Town" (from a new [...]

Kjell B Persson Know what the worst thing about not going to SXSW this Spring was? Not missing SXSW, but not having my previously annual late-Winter vacation. In fact, save for a weekend jaunt to New York last November, the last time I got out of the 416 was Labour Day - that's well over eight months ago, and right mental. And while I'd like to say that the European theme of this post is a hint as to where I'm getting away to, it unfortunately is not. I still hope to make it across the Atlantic later [...]

This Newcastle band (if I recall correctly) were on my bands to watch in 2012 list but kinda went quiet after the release of their debut album. Glad to see that Lanterns On The Lake and their gorgeous dream pop is back. Another Tale From Another English Town is the exquisite first single from the bands forthcoming second album, out later this year. Watch [...]

Lanterns on the Lake: Low Tide

It's Mercury Prize time once more; and with the Frankel of the UK alternative music scene, PJ Harvey's fanciful quicksilver a non-runner this year, a collective (if not purely metaphorical) sigh of relief is emitted by the chasing pack. That's not to say we're in any way implying there's a system of quasi-impartiality or shadowy politics at work; merely that when certain names are touted - more often than not - their inclusion is met with divided opinion. But that's what it's all about, surely? Opinion. So for the second year (and soon to become [...]

I've been looking forward to the End of the Road festival for some time now, thankfully the time is almost here. One of my favourite labels Bella Union are curating an entire day at the festival, the Friday, and they have put together an exceptional line-up to start off the (hopefully rain free) weekend. I'll split my 'ones to watch' posts in two, one concentrating on the BU day and another on the rest of the weekend, both with six of the best acts to watch (there are plenty more acts to see) if [...]

Stacey Hatfield As performing names go, Daughter certainly exists pretty far on the "not very" end of the Google-ability scale, but they're worth the effort. Originally a pseudonym for London's Elena Tonra, its scope eventually expanded to include guitarist Igor Haefeli and now, with drummer Remi Aguilella in the fold, represents the trio and is a proper band - one whose dark, quietly dramatic, atmospheric folk turned out to be one of the highlights of this year's SXSW . Considering that hot on the heels of their festival appearances came the word that [...]

So, erm... as the cultural black hole of the Edinburgh Festival lumbers towards us like a hungry giant, blithely trampling all before it as it stumbles clumsily towards the Magners tent to gorge itself on what can surely be chemically proven to be one of the world's nastiest ciders, I find myself wondering what the fine people of Edinburgh can do in the face of such a knee-trembling onslaught of shock and awful. Plenty, it turns out is the answer. So, after tearing my hair out waiting for the fucking Mixcloud uploader to start working again so I [...]
Hard to believe you can make Lanterns on the Lake ’s gorgeous melodies even more appealing. Manchester-based producer Damu did it. Listen on repeat! [...]

No Direction Home Festival || Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire || 8-10 June 2012 The omens were not good for the inaugural No Direction Home music festival, setting out in heavy rain that only got heavier as the traffic got slower the further north I went. However, despite the slate grey skies and constant brake lights of the M1, a journey of over 5 hours was rewarded on arrival by a break in the weather than unbelievably lasted for the whole three days. No Direction Home is a new “little brother” venture [...]
If you’re a music fan, there was a good chance you hit a festival on this past Jubilee weekend. There’s options ranging from Dot to Dot to Field Day and in one corner of west London, there’s Communion ’s very own Bushstock . Shepherds Bush lays host to a diverse selection of acts in an even more varied selection of venues. Running is borderline mandatory. Rae Morris opens the day’s music in an incredibly crowded Defector’s Weld pub. Coming out of an increasingly vibrant [...]
As you read this I will probably still be speeding northwards through the torrential rain on the M1 heading for Sherwood Forest and the inaugural No Direction Home music festival. Having spent the last two years happily enjoying the fantastic End of the Road festival, my plans were scuppered for a hat-trick by a sneaky move in dates making it clash with our first overseas family holiday in years to the beaches of Spain. Thankfully, the same folk are behind this one so despite the rotten weather forecast, hopes are high for another fantastic [...]
