It's Valentines Day. Love it or hate it, you can't deny it. I will, of course, effortlessly be showing Mrs M just what a lucky catch I was. And for the rest of you, by way of a massively contrived link, let us cover you with love too. Here is a tasty little mix of covers we've picked up to follow on from yesterday's Bad Moon Rising post , just don't expect them to be all loved-up now will you. First up is a sublime cover of Neil Young's classic Hey Hey [...]

Lanterns on The Lake bringen grosse Gefühle in reduzierte Songs unter. Am Freitag, 10. Februar, spielt das amerikanische Sextett am One of a Million Festival in Baden. "The coast, red wine, the northumberland countryside, you, me, the deep blue sea, good bands, bad bands, Newcastle upon Tyne, dancing in the dark." , listen Lanterns on The Lake als Einflüsse auf. So wirr wie ihre Musen ist die verträumte Musik der Amerikaner aber nicht. Die Songs auf dem Debüt "Gracious Tide Take Me Home" reflektieren schimmernd jenen leuchtenden Moment, in [...]

While the moon may rarely be spotted lurching over the lateral, literal horizon keep an eye on the stars for Poor Moon . With the ink still moist on a deal with Bella Union, given the sultry and suppressed euphoria of People In Her Mind it's a unione that can indeed be qualified as outrightly 'bella': of a Lanterns on the Lake ilk via Soft Bulletin-era Flaming Lips the track is lifted from Illusion, a debut EP we're now anxiously awaiting that's pencilled in for an early Spring release. Comprising brothers Peter and Ian Murray (aka The Christmas Cards) [...]

This Friday night sees Newcastle-based sextet Lanterns On The Lake pay Dublin a visit for a show of fragile and graceful folk music at the Workman's Club. Released on the Bella Union label, who know a thing or two about that sort of music, debut album Gracious Tide, Take Me Home has seen the band win plaudits left, right and centre. State has a pair of tickets to give away to this weekend's show. To enter, just mail us at giveaway@state.ie by 5pm on Thursday.
Cargo's interior feels like an air-raid shelter; or, at least what I imagine an air-raid shelter to be like. Set under a disused railway bridge in East London, it's a strange mixture of Dickensian and avant-garde. With a red brick, arched ceiling and cold stone floor, the room doesn't immediately suggest great acoustics. Imposingly wide ventilation tubes hang to either side of the ceiling, and the sound booth is an even greater oddity. This hefty, box-like construction appears to be stuck to the back wall by the ceiling, taking up about half the wall width. The remaining space hosts a [...]

So, as the New Year approaches, here are our favourite albums of 2011 for your consideration. Feel free to dispute, argue, or otherwise put us right because, if nothing else, music is as about as subjective topic as it is possible to get. Some of these may not be the "best" albums of the year as far as the critics are concerned, but that matters not, as they were the ones we enjoyed listening to most - give them a try, you might feel the same. 50 Jessica Lea Mayfield [...]

Roger Deckker A little before the holidays rolled in, Swedish songstress Lykke Li gave her fans an early Christmas gift by releasing a three-song EP of stripped-down versions of this year's Wounded Rhymes . They're decidedly spare and more downbeat than the finished versions, but if you liked the moodiness that pervaded her second album, then you might well like these versions better than the album versions because they've got shadowy atmosphere to spare. And if the version of "Jerome" sounds familiar, it's because a video of the [...]
Heycoolkid! 100 Best Songs Of 2011 - (26 - 40) . . 40. Hey Rosetta! - "Bandages" Before saying anything about this song, I fully realize that "Bandages" was not released in 2011. It was though new to me this year and the video they put out over the summer for it really impressed me. [...]

Our final Top Ten selection comes courtesy of the lovely, and ever radiant, Mrs Mackerel. Over to you girl! It's been a great musical year. But such a plethora of riches always presents a problem – what's a girl to choose? Fortunately some fine contributions in the preceding week means most bases are covered. Live gigs, although few and far between this year, have been rich in quality, and particularly finger-picking good on the guitar front. A fine ensemble of gig friends too, thank you. Without further ado, here's my humble opinion. And remember [...]
Heycoolkid!'s 100 Best Songs Of 2011 (41-55) . . 55. Middle Brother - "Me, Me, Me" What is there not to love when combining key elements of Delta Spirits, Deer Tick, and Dawes? "Me, Me, Me" is an indie honky-tonk set on fire. Every element from the Jerry Lee Lewis style piano to the Lynard [...]
12. Zola Jesus - Vessel Posted 29th June : "Vessel" is a stunning return for Nika Roza Danilova, harsh metallic beats and Nika's colossal voice create an immediate, menacing atmosphere that's dramatic and chilly." 11. Dum Dum Girls - Coming Down Posted 20th July : "Coming Down" is a real heart on sleeve lament. Dee Dee's smoky vocals recall more Hope Sandoval than the lo-fi fuzzed-out Shangri-La's of the debut. Languid, echoey guitars shimmer with emotion [...]

Next to share their favourites of the year is part man part canine Barry-Sean... What a fantastic year for music this has been for me. I don't just mean for music that has been produced this year but more about the music that I've discovered from previous years (or, more accurately in most cases, music that has been discovered for me). And, because I've spent a lot of time going backwards and forwards to London on the train, I've had loads of listening time. Hurrah! So here we go. Here's my top ten songs of 2011. [...]

Divertitevi. [...]
If you haven't been downright impressed with the overflow of incredible genre crossing music this year you are either a huge Nickleback fan or you are Amish, there's no other logical excuse to complain about the status of music. Last year when I put the "Best Albums" list together it was one of the first [...]

Gracious Tide Take Me Home by Lanterns on the Lake seems to have a watery connection with Breaking More Waves. Our coast loving persuasion is drawn to an album whose songs feature titles of Ships in the Rain , Not Going Back To The Harbour and on If I've Been Unkind lyrics that gently intone 'when I sailed the seas, you were never even there'. However even if the band had been singing about steel-toe capped booted builders painting and decorating a castle we suspect we would have fallen head over heels [...]

Before I start with my end of year posts (favourite albums / songs of 2011 / tips for 2012), I thought I'd revisit my tips for 2011... In early December 2010 I gave fifteen acts whom I tipped not for stardom (though perhaps it would have been nice in some cases) but as artists that potentially could offer some of the finest releases of the year, now almost twelve months later I'll revisit the acts and (perhaps) see if I was right or not by form a brief (or not so in some cases) synopsis of what they've been [...]
