At one point during the show, Joey Ryan from the LA based folk duo The Milk Carton Kids, remarked how worried he was to play the Largo for fear of no one showing up. Well that fear was quickly put to bed last Thursday at the sold-out hometown show for the two troubadours. Let me start off by saying there is no better place to see a show in LA than The Largo, especially a show like this. Coupling the setting with the fact that the woman next to me was wearing my ex-girlfriends perfume (and alot of it) set [...]

Jon Brion in 2008 / photo by Yenna Friday night was a very unusual night at Largo. Not that any evening in Los Angeles' best venue is ever uneventful, but Friday felt strange from the moment I took my seat. Jon Brion's usual set-up-a drum set, bass, guitar rack and his trusty piano on stage right-was transformed, the rhythm section replaced by a second, larger piano. His looping pedals were notably absent. He took the stage in a pinstriped three-piece suit and performed the only completely acoustic set I've ever seen him play, [...]

I need to preface this article by saying this is less of a live show review and more of a commentary with my relationship to the music of Ryan Adams. Despite everything that has been said about the history of Adams, his musical output, and so-called artistic wrong turns; Ryan Adams is the reason I love music the way I do. He is the reason I am writing for this blog, the reason I spend every amount of expendable income on records and shows, and the reason for the deep connection I have towards music as a whole. Now go [...]

Jenny Lewis may be know as one half of Jenny and Johnny , one fourth of Rilo Kiley or maybe just the girl that stole your nerdy video gaming heart back in '89 (yes that was a reference to The Wizard ). No matter how you know her, get ready for an intimate solo show to take place at Largo on Monday, October 17th. Tickets are set to go on sale beginning on Friday, August 26th at 10am through Largo's website for $25.00 plus any additional service fees. Don't [...]

James Vincent McMorrow blows the roof off Largo JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW @ LARGO @ THE CORONET - JUNE 13TH Opening the show for current show stoppers, The Civil Wars, James Vincent McMorrow had quite the presence to fill on Monday night at the cozy LA venue - Largo at the Coronet. Stepping onto the stage without his band, JVM entered the awaiting silent room and began filling all the empty spaces with the beautiful vulnerability of his voice. A nearly pitch black room against a [...]
• I've been so busy taking preventative measures against catching the cold/flu that has been going around at work, I almost forgot to blog today. Between the Zinc pills and the vitamin C and the Echinacea and the various other supplements I've shoved down my throat over the last forty-eight hours, it's a miracle I've managed to leave my room. Actually, that's not true. I had to leave my room at least twice to cleanse my sinuses with my trusty Neti Pot. The good news is my symptoms haven't worsened since I first noticed the slight tickle/soreness at the back of [...]

He grew up playing..wait..he never grew up. He's Reggie Watts and He plays his mouth. A hole band lives inside there and he pulls bits and pieces out during his shows. He calls himself a multi-media comedic artist, a "disinformationist," maybe just a nut with a 2880 stereo looper by Electro Harmonix.. Not one song sounds the same! He just finished touring with Conan on The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour 2010. This man changed my life with his antics and i hope you all come and join the club on November [...]

Jenny & Johnny It's been a month since I've been to a show. A month. What is wrong with me? Thankfully, that will all change tomorrow as I head from behind the Orange Curtain and into LA to see the Avett Brothers and Brandi Carlile . That should be a great Friday night show: chill, with a few songs to get me going. My days (and nights) have been busy to say the least lately, and it should be nice to sip a drink, sit down, and listen to Brandi and [...]
If you closed your eyes, you would've sworn it was James Taylor. It was the soothing vocals, intricate yet simple guitar fingering and then a lyric "your boyfriend is cute". Wait, what? When you open your eyes you'd realize its not the original JT after all, it's his son, Benjamin. Tuesday night at the Largo was [...]

If you missed him at Spaceland, go check him out at Largo's Little Room tonight. Special guests will include Gillian Welch, David Rawlings and Grant Lee Phillips. The Little Room is an intimate little space and they have beer and wine now. Only $10.
Shortly after the Largo jam session featuring Harper Simon and his circle of Silver Lake superstar friends, I got a text: "Was he at least as good as Jakob Dylan?" my friend asked waggishly. Well, sure! Maybe!

Vandals on Friday night set fire to the locally famous TacoZone taco truck stationed on Alvarado a couple blocks north of Sunset. The setback knocked the popular dispensers of late-night munchies out of business briefly, but they have rebounded with a repaired truck. A benefit show to help offset the costs of those repairs has been arranged for Friday at Spaceland, featuring the Mae Shi , Kenan Bell , Robert Francis and, the organizer vows, "special guests." A benefit for a taco truck, now that's L.A. ... Just when I expected a revival of the genre [...]

I'll be honest, when Joan Osborne broke back in 1995, I wasn't as blown away. The God Song was everywhere and I quickly grew tired of that quasi-philosophical song. The only song off of Relish I liked at all back then was "Why Don't We Just Get Naked". Now, years later, I can listen to Relish and enjoy it. Appreciate it. Joan has gotten back together with her Relish crew ( Rick Chertoff, Rob Hyman, and Eric Bazilian ) and recorded a new album: Little Wild One. The only is a chance [...]

Hard to believe this Mandolin Week is over. I had a lot of mando-music to share that didn't fall into any other weekly features. So I'll feature them here, today, in a random sort of way.
