This compilation is not accompanied by an instalment in the country history, because the next chapter goes with the next mix. And, in some ways, it makes sense that this mix has no history (of course, the timeframe is covered by past articles in the series) because the late 1970s was a time of hiatus. Many of the stalwarts of just a few years earlier ceased having strings of hits, and those artists who had grown out of the Outlaw movement now had their day. In this mix, the likes of Guy Clark, John Anderson, Larry Jon Wilson [...]

Larry Jon Wilson wasn't so much ahead of his times as slightly sideways from them. The blend of country-influenced, heartfelt songwriting and swampy funk grooves that powers this long-overdue reissue of the Georgia-born songwriter's first two albums was fairly fashionable when these records were cut in the mid-702s. But Wilson chose to go to the extremes. When the tracks opt for heartbreak and sorrow, Wilson digs way down into the Blues, keeping things intimate - to a point where it's hard to imagine anyone else singing such deeply personal tunes, despite their richly sumptuous melodies. [...]
From the late 1960s through the early '70s, Mickey Newbury released a string of classic albums that helped to redefine the definitions of/blur the boundaries between country, folk, and the burgeoning singer/songwriter movement. The word "seminal" gets thrown around pretty loosely these days, but to give you an idea of Newbury's importance in the aforementioned context, both Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark made their initial move to Nashville because their fellow Texan Newbury was there, and Kris Kristofferson, another Lone Star export to Music City, once said "I learned more about songwriting from Mickey than I did any other [...]
(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.) This week we catch up with the Black Swans Jerry DeCicca as he reflects on his working relationship with the late/great Larry Jon Wilson. Jerry has an interesting vantage point as he [...]

Many are still mourning the passing of immensely talented and woefully overlooked country singer Larry Jon Wilson . But to celebrate his music, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Columbus's the Black Swans "Sing Larry Jon Wilson" on this new Drag City seven-inch. The Bonnie Prince, with some help from Cheyenne Mize, tackles "Bertrand My Son" off Wilson's 1975 Monument Records debut New Beginnings . Jerry DeCicca, who produced LJW's self-titled "comeback" album released on Drag City last year (my fav of '09 ), enlisted his Black Swans to do "The [...]

Larry Jon Wilson - Ohoopee River Bottomland ( buy ) Just got the sad news that undeservedly obscure country singer Larry Jon Wilson has died, aged 69. You may remember his soulful baritone from that great documentary called Heartworn Highways . Albums as New Beginnings (´75) and Let Me Sing My Song For You (´76) are probably his best, but his eponymous ´08 comeback blew me away as well. Miss him.

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Singer-songwriter Larry Jon Wilson died on Monday, June 21 from a stroke, according to the Tennessean . The 69-year-old passed away while visiting his family in Roanoke, Va. While he had modest commercial success, Wilson was widely respected by his peers and fans. In the '70s, Wilson made four albums, including his 1975 debut, 'New Beginnings.' His most recent release was a self-titled LP issued by Drag City Records in 2009.
Click here to view the embedded video. Got the sad news today from Jerry DeCicca that Georgia-born singer and songwriter extraordinaire Larry Jon Wilson passed away. Larry Jon was probably my favorite interview subject of all time, and his self-titled Drag City debut topped my 2009 list . It was as much a joy to talk with the man on the phone as it was to listen to his music. I was looking forward to the day I could see Larry Jon Wilson in person, but his music will [...]

(Separate Columbus list further down. Though, if the lists were combined, some of the local releases would unseat a few here...) 1. Larry Jon Wilson - Larry Jon Wilson I won't lie. Talking to Larry Jon and producer Jerry DeCicca (Black Swans) about this album, learning about its origins, and visiting Wilson's back catalog gave me a heightened appreciation for this masterpiece. So context helps, but even if you know nothing about the back story, this is a stark, beautiful album from start to finish [...]
I reviewed the new Larry Jon Wilson album for the August edition Spin . You can check it out on pg. 93 in print or the digital edition . Also in that issue: Spin's list of the "100 greatest bands you've (probably) never heard of," which is a good read, especially because it includes four legendary Columbus bands: Gaunt, Great Plains, Royal Crescent Mob and Scrawl.
Really nice interview with LJW by Stephen Deusner here .

I have to admit this tenpack formula is a rather lazy affair, but heck, it´s summer, right? Let´s milk it some more then. Today we´re going completely country, with a varied selection of originators, outlaws and outsiders of the genre. So take that rocking chair outside, pour yourself a tall cool one (may I suggest the Lone Star brand?) and "sing a little bit of these working man blues..." Merle Haggard - Workin´ Man Blues MP3 Louvin Brothers - Let Her Go, God Bless Her MP3 [...]

Ryan (StopMe): Still recovering from the heatwave? Still reeling from Murray's defeat? Well no matter, because here are ten more tunes to soothe those summertime blues: Apostle Of Hustle has to be one of the best band names ever and luckily they've got the music to back it up. 'Eazy Speaks' is frenetic catchy Indie with plenty of sharp lyrics like "Keep your friends close, enemy closer, kiss on the cheek from a punk ass poser" . Chicks On Speed are [...]

Last year I talked to Jerry DeCicca of the Black Swans about an album he produced by a guy named Larry Jon Wilson, an old Nashville singer-songwriter who hadn't recorded a new album in almost 30 years. We chatted back and forth about the story for a while, and finally Drag City is releasing the record on Tuesday. So after a year of talking and exploring Wilson's music, I was at last able to put some words on paper. You can read the story in The Other Paper this week, or online here . I had more [...]

"I've got a shoulder poppa told me I might have to carry the world on but God never gave me a shoulder, baby, strong enough to carry your goodbye tearstains on." - Shoulders by Larry Jon Wilson Georgia's Larry Jon Wilson recorded four albums for the Monument label in mid-70s Nashville. An associate of fellow singer/songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark (Mr. Wilson appears with them in the outlaw country documentary Heartworn Highways ) his early work was a cross planted somewhere between the [...]

Or: the triumphant return of an obscure outlaw. Larry Jon Williams (born 1940 in Swainsboro, Georgia) was one of those musicians who couldn´t stomach the slick and conservative country establishment that ruled Nashville in the late sixties and early seventies. So he fought back and tried to do it his own way, together with pals like Townes Van Zandt, Mickey Newberry, Tony Joe White and Kris Kristofferson. The latter is on record stating about Larry Jon that ´he can break your heart with a voice like a cannon ball.´ Spot on. Larry [...]
And where would we be without that inevitable end-of-year round up, dear readers? I bet you´d like to know which albums were loved the most at For The Sake Of The Song headquarters this year. So without further ado, here goes... in no particular order. Bob Dylan´s latest Bootleg Series installment, Tell Tale Signs , has been in heavy rotation since the day it came out. The exorbitant price tag on the 3-disc set was definitely a minus, but that´s about the only beef I have with [...]
