This is really high quality tuneage from West Phillips, made in 83. Seriously funky, the type of slow electro bass we are pumping real heavy shit too. You would never believe how the title line... It's two years now since we began broadcasting here from Fluville. I usually mark this day with some Elvis, since I started this on his birthday (Happy Birthday Elvis), but instead, today we'll pay tribute to an infectious little number (pun intended) by our patron saint Huey 'Piano' Smith. I've gathered up a few versions of "Rockin' Pneumonia and The Boogie Woogie Flu," for your listening pleasure. First, the original in it's original 78 RPM issue. It rocks, but you know that already. Next, The Clowns' drag-queen lead singer [...]

(from The Sensational She-Hulk Graphic Novel , 1985; by John Byrne & Kim DeMulder) Yep, nothing kills the mood worse than cockroach breath. Larry Williams - You Bug Me Baby (from the Specialty Profiles collection , 2006) - Not only was Larry (no relation to Barry) Williams one of the most influential songwriters of the early days of rock and roll, he was also played a role in Little Richard becoming a born again Christian...by attempting to shoot the Georgia Peach over a drug debt. Well, there you have it. This is probably the last of my series on the "original" version of Gram Parsons' songs. This installment focuses on Gram's solo albums. The first three songs (1-3) were covered on Gram's first solo LP, GP , released in 1972. The next three (4-6) were covered on his second solo LP, Grievous Angel , released posthumously in 1974. Songs 7-9 are the original verions of songs Gram and Emmylou recorded as outakes from the Grievous Angel sessions (available on various compilations, [...]

The first time I heard "Bony Maronie," it was not by Larry Williams, but by Johnny Winters and I was in my early teens, stoned, and trying to learn the riff on guitar in my friends basement. The first time I heard "Hattie Malattie" by Lee Diamond, I was sure it was some record company guy at Vee-Jay trying to come up with a "Bony Maronie" type of thing to get a hit. I wasn't stoned, but I was wrong. It does bear a resemblance to "Bony Maronie," but it turns out Lee Diamond is actually [...]

Larry Williams only recorded for a couple of years at Specialty. From those handful of sessions some of the most influential early rock 'n roll tunes were recorded. Both of these numbers as well as "Bad Boy" were all recorded by The Beatles a few years later. The Stones did their take on "She Said Yeah". The version of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" here is a continuation of my earlier Guitar Slim post . Once again, chaos reigns supreme at Specialty. This take is vastly different than the version I know from the CD [...]
