What an eventful weekend. Friday night we celebrated Tom's birthday (and I stayed sober! wow!) out in North Hollywood. Last night I went to a birthday party/murder mystery party that was both stupid and amazing in equal measure (and I didn't stay sober! wow!). Got home shortly before sunrise and managed to make it into [...]

Mutual Benefit Boston Jordan Lee I am a professional amateur musician currently sleeping on the floor of a rehearsal space in Boston and recording songs in the bathroom. Everything feels really transient and exciting right now, though I suppose mutual benefit actually started from me being incredibly sad. Maybe angst is a better word. Everything was freaking me out; televisions, grocery stores, the internet, money, the music scene, weekly business meetings, digitalization, cars, [...]

Folk, anti-folk, psych-folk, new folk, wyrd folk - you know it when you hear it though god knows what it means these days. I'm just glad it's so healthy and so mixed-up, showing some hybrid vigour. Rough Trade have put out a series of fine samplers, and this psych-folk collection is an interesting mix of relatively old-fashioned acts, well-established recent ones like the Owl Service and Six Organs of Admittance, and things that were entirely new to me. The CD comes with a piece by Rob Young, author of Electric Eden (a book I think BBO should be [...]

It's back and sporting some kickass line-ups for this year. Tonight kicked off the San Francisco side of the festival with shows at The Makeout Room, Café Du Nord, and The Knockout. The festival itself was created in 1996 and has since hosted the likes of Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, The Dodos, Kelley Stoltz, Thee Oh Sees, and Vetiver . This year is no exception. So to kick off this little festival, we decided to name our top five favorite artists on the bill (one of which performed last night, sorry Rykarda). So if you aren't [...]
How much do you believe the hype? You're probably better at that than me. You must be if you're a regular Doklands reader, as barely a day goes by without me telling you that something is exceptional, or spectacular, or unmissable, or just plain amazing. But you still get burnt by the hype now and then, right? You think you've discovered a certain type of band, and then resent them when they sound different to your idealised version of them? For me that happened with Kemialliset Ystävät. Everywhere I was reading about this [...]
Last night Nic and I consumed what will inevitably go down as a top ten Los Angeles burger. The "Dry Age Burger" at Oaks Gourmet Market on the border of Hollywood and Los Feliz is quite good. Theirs is (obviously) dry-aged, topped with Taleggio cheese, smoked bacon and a sweet-tasting jalapeno-pineapple compote. I don't know if it will crack the top five, but it will be close. I still have at least three more hamburgers to taste that have won "Best of LA" honors on other blogs. Then I have to begin the process of re-eating most of the finalists [...]
Saudade – Hidden Talented Oh fuck, EVOCATIVE. This is some hazed out space-age shit, like getting high through a motherboard in 2200. Pretty fucking creepy, too: the white noise builds and builds and the whole time there's this melody way up high that's all noble and righteous yet out of reach, like the human spirit facing the apocalypse or a lone astronaut adrift in a galaxy of evil. Wha? Sorry, I can't stop thinking about how much better all my fave sci-fi flix would be if Saudade scored them. Also how much more traumatic. [...]

[MP3] Lau Nau - Kuoleman Tappajan Kuolema [MP3] Lau Nau - Rubiinilasia
Although the only songs I've really listened to in the last couple of weeks are 'Brothersport' by Animal Collective. 'Here Comes The Night' by Destroyer and 'Can't Hear My Eyes' by Ariel Pink, I listened to lots of records this year. I heard them in Australia, in New Zealand (in the sun/in my Mum's Hyundai), in England, out of computer speakers. There were lots of good albums but I think mostly what I heard was cassettes, though they weren't cassettes, they were .mp3s, out of headphones, full of even more hiss and warm fuzz. I believe one trait of my [...]

Lau Nau Nukkuu (05.2008, Locust) File under = new weirder Finland I don't know what kind of water they have running through the taps in Finland, or the greater Scandinavia as a whole for that matter, but I think it is about time that we had some of that fresh icy H2O diverted to these shores. Something about it - something which I can only assume really - must be utterly refreshing and beautiful, that is if quenching thirst can be beautiful. If you don't quite know what I'm getting at, then Lau Nau [...]

Pitchfork reviews the new Lau Nau album "Nukuu" : http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/ article/record_review/142597-l au-nau-nukkuu
Written and recorded in the stolen intervals spacing her child's naps, the sophomore record from Finnish folkie Lau Nau doesn't actually depart much from its also-excellent predecessor, 2005's Kuutarha . read more
As always, Stereogum is your one stop shop for Santi White litigation and tourdates news. Santogold's sorta blowing up, right? Cue the lawsuits. It's not everyday I get to use my entirely rusted law school skills, so thanks to the Lustigman Firm, P.C. for emailing us their amusing 20-page complaint (it opens by quoting "The rules I break ... Me I'm a taker" from the hook of "Creator"!), filed in US Southern District Court of New York against Santogold, Downtown, and Lizard King Records, on behalf of Santo Gold. Who is Santo Gold? Plaintiff refers you to Clause 2 under [...]
