It's been a long time since the intimacy of winter, when I stayed up late with the elderchild to stand on the bright, crisp snow and point her Christmas telescope at the moon. A long time, really, since either of us were together much at all. These days, my world is a whirlwind. I'm overcommitted, and constantly on the move. If I've been absent from these pages too long, it's because I wasn't home to write. May is generally a busy time for teachers, but this year there's [...]
Five artists create their own silver lining within the dark, dark cloud of John Prine's classic song.

I've shared this feature several times for Memorial Day - but somehow, I skipped it this May. So here’s our traditional post in honor of those who serve, plus an ever-growing set of bonus tracks for our regular readers. For most of my life, the military has been an abstraction. Though war itself lives everpresent in our newsdriven culture, and memorial statues and parades a recurring part of community, my concept of life in the armed forces, and the risks and [...]

I’m a little apprehensive about writing this post about best gigs of the year, partly because I think I’ve seen less this year than many others but mainly because I seem to know a few people who seem to go to a mindboggling number of gigs. I know of a couple of people who are nearly into three figures for the year. Think about it, pretty much two gigs a week… {prostrates himself on the floor} But, anyhoo, for what’s its worth here are seven cracking live experiences from this year. In no particular order… [...]

Laura Cantrell : 14th Street [ purchase ] The picture above says it perfectly. You are looking down the middle of 14th Street in New York City. On one side of the street, the buildings are all a washed out brown color. On the other side, the buildings look vibrant and alive, decked out in that rich reddish brown. 14th Street marks the northern border of Greenwich Village, the famous Bohemian enclave. In Laura Cantrell’s song 14th Street, her narrator seemingly comes from the brown side of the street, while the [...]

The result is a finely crafted album that recalls the vintage sound of country music past. Kitty Wells was best known for her megahit from the '50s, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels". That song made her the first female country singer to top the U.S. country charts. She became the first contemporary female country star and set the template for the plainspoken, tough talking country female vocalists that followed in her wake. Fans have christened Wells the "Queen of Country Music", and modern singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell certainly shares...
