The second of three posts in the Elvis Costello series focuses on the song Indoor Fireworks from King Of America (1986). It's no secret that Elvis Costello is a fan of classic country music--one of the many styles to have shaped his sound over the years. While Indoor Fireworks is not a straight-up country song like Stranger In The House or Radio Sweetheart , the country influence definitely shines through, especially when performed by country singer Laura Cantrell. This should be no surprise, as Elvis was conscioulsy [...]
Whew. I'm exhausted from yesterday's post. The hardest part of doing the survey was seeing how many great albums only got one, two 1. Matador Matador houses artists as diverse as The New Pornographers (and, of course, A.C. Newman), Belle & Sebastian, Cat Power and (formerly) Interpol. And just about all of them got votes. There were votes for albums by Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Mogwai, The Ponys, The Frogs . . . Even Laura Cantrell got one for "Humming by the Flowered Vine." [...]

Here in Southern Ohio it's a lovely 73 degrees today. I spent an hour sitting on the balcony of my 3rd floor apartment reading the Paste magazine that arrived in the mail for me today, listening to ye ol' iPod and watching a resident groundhog scamper around on the ground below. It keeps kids off the street." -- [...]
