Indie Diva Edition (Volume 2) A while back , I put together a playlist that featured many of my favorite female vocalists. Unfortunately, I couldn't fit them all onto one Hump Day Power Play . March Madness just ended and all of you bracketologists out there are probably pretty sad you'll have to until next year to get your bracketology on, but don't fret! Back for a second year by popular demand, in a move that is sure to establish itself as a Portland institution - it's Rigsketball ! If you're late to the game, Rigsketball is halfcourt, 3v3 basketball played on a regulation hoop attached to the back of a van, just about anywhere the cops won't bust the party. However, when played in a bracket-style tournament with 32 of Portland's most ballin' [...]

Laura Gibson has got a new single coming out. The Fire is taken from the singer's recently released album, La Grande , and it's out on April 9 via City Slang .

Laura Gibson - Milk-Heavy, Pollen-Eyed (via certainsongs )

Holly Golightly featuring The Brokeoffs - No Big Thing

A beautiful and emotive album as Laura Gibson invokes her home state of Oregon, and invites us to join her on a musical journey. Upon hearing Laura Gibson's new album La Grande, I feel I should be strapped to an Oregon Wagon and made to pull it along the Oregon Trail, all 2,000 miles of it, while dispensing fulsome praise of both Laura and La Grande. I should be made to stop in La Grande (pronounced in the American West as "luh grand"), a town apparently just east of the Wallowa Valley, in order to genuflect and thank whatever...
A number of bands will get a pop from performances at SXSW this week. But there's already been a lot of buzz around some fine albums released this year before the big tilt in Austin. Grimes and Cloud Nothings made two of my favorite albums this year and they couldn't be more different. Grimes' Visions is insanely catchy electronic pop. The songs will stick in your head for weeks. Grimes is Claire Boucher, a Canadian singer who turns 24 this weekend. Boucher had [...]

The rather great folky-smoky Laura Gibson drops a new single on April 9th, the brilliant The Fire . Taken from her equally-good La Grande album which was released earlier this year, its timid beginnings slowly morph into something far grander once a stately piano makes its entrance. The whole thing is wonderfully lo fi and has great warmth to it. Well worth a few minutes of your time. Laura Gibson plays a six-date tour of the UK this April.
It doesn't roll off the tongue with quite the same alliterative ease but let's call this Freeloader Monday. If you're heading down to Austin next week, it's a good bet that you have started to assemble an elaborate SXSW itinerary that will take you all over the city to see ...

On La Grande, Portland, Oregon's Laura Gibson expands upon the fragile alt-folk of her previous releases while retaining the qualities that make her such an appealing example of contemporary Americana. My introduction to Gibson came in the live setting, where she opened for and accompanied a solo show by Decemberist Colin Meloy to fabulous effect. His tour CD Colin Meloy Sings Sam Cooke also happened to be enriched by Gibson's strong backing vocals, their presence prompting me to seek out Six White Horses: Blues and Traditionals Vol. 1, [...]

I've been thinking about how I am going to write this review and honestly I am not sure. I don't think anyone really knew what they were in for with Breathe Owl Breathe, especially after the local more mellow coffee shop kind of act and I don't mean that in a bad way because he was very good. Breathe Owl Breathe is a very unique band with a unique sound, which can be described as folk music, but at times is often more pop like and at [...]
Waaay more than necessary, but there were oodles of videos that were highly enjoyable this week. I'm especially proud of Laura Gibson, who stepped out from behind her music to star in a haunting video for her title track song, "Le Grande". Also, watch out for the slow-mo ta ta's in the Labyrinth Ear [...]
