Waaay more than necessary, but there were oodles of videos that were highly enjoyable this week. I'm especially proud of Laura Gibson, who stepped out from behind her music to star in a haunting video for her title track song, "Le Grande". Also, watch out for the slow-mo ta ta's in the Labyrinth Ear [...]

The light persistent rain couldn't keep San Francisco's damp masses from huddling together for a night of varied folksters at Bottom of the Hill on February 6th. The evening starter, Oakland's very own singer/songwriter Morgan Manifacier , was accompanied by a celloist. Both were seated, but that did not stop an enthusiastic crowd from gobbling them up. I do suspect a few ringer audience members were in attendance, as the activity near the front of the stage threatened to shake free a couple of ceiling tiles. Manifacier's sound is reminiscent of everyone's favorite [...]

Photos by Philip Cosores It's kind of strange going to see a couple of folk acts in a space like The Echo. The room is everything you'd want in rock'n'roll venue; dark, grimy, and loud, which is not exactly what you want when you're going to see bright, clean, and relaxed music. The challenge for the acts then becomes to use their music to make the audience forget their surroundings and transport them somewhere else. On this occasion Breathe Owl Breathe and Laura Gibson both gave it their best shot, to varying levels of success. [...]

Laura Gibson sang to friendly faces at home in Portland Friday night. Cozy, be-balconied Mississippi Studios played a lovely host - I spied from on high as Mike Midlo , Breathe Owl Breathe , and Gibson played in the spotlight (for the second time that night). A real treat of an evening: little known opener turn out to be gems, songs I hope will be played sound even better live. Growing up in Northeast Portland, we had neighborhood pancake breakfasts in The Madeline School parking lot each summer. The grocer from [...]

Laura Gibson - La Grande (via thetousle )

Parker Fitzgerald Perhaps you read this week's music lead about Laura Gibson , and her excellent new record La Grande , which transplants the local chanteuse's parlor folk into a Wild West landscape filled with guns, gold, and ghosts. Unsurprisingly, Gibson's release show for La Grande tomorrow night at Mississippi Studios is super sold out . Super duper sold out. Super duper sold out with frosting and cherries. And those diced nuts. But good news, music (and [...]

Live This Month: February 2012 (Podcast #270) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The twentieth installment of the Noise Pop Music Festival takes over a wide variety of local venues later this month - and we'll be covering many of those shows - but there are also plenty of pre-NP events worth checking out. Locally, two bands are seeing the release of records for which it feels like we've been waiting forever: [...]
January and myself didn't get along very well. Anything that could go wrong did. This probably had a large influence on my listening habits as I spent a lot of time listening to songs that I can take comfort in. Of course my top two, Sharon Van Etten and Damien Jurado, had new albums that weren't available to me until late this month but I fell hard for both of them when I finally did get to hear them. You can pre-order both albums and get the [...]

Thanks in part to the H.O.R.D.E. Tour the mid to late '90s could easily be looked at as the golden age of jambands, with regional bands turning into national touring acts thanks to an open-minded and enthusiastic fan base that where eager to discover the next big thing. Among the crop of bands that sprang up during this boom was The Big Wu , who formed at St. Olaf College in 1992 and earned a fervent following around the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The Minnesota-based act , who hold the distinction of being the first band on at [...]

We finally say goodbye to January, and wave hello to February. If you can't get into that one, check out The Family Crest , who wrap up a month-long residency in Seattle, with Valley Fair , and Brite Lines at the Tractor. On Thursday, a couple of KEXP favorites: Nada Surf and Say Hi also play at the Tractor, and on Friday, Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra, [...]
