Every year the crew behind the music wing of SXSW release a torrent with mp3's from the bands appearing across Austin. If your bag is traipsing through a mountain of mp3's (700+) then jump right in but be warned that you'll have to circumnavigate plenty of dross to turn up gems like 'Hands In Pockets'. At the point that Laura Gibson appeared I had massacred at least a dozen songs that ranged
Yet again, another artist that I had the pleasure of remixing in August. This is actually a cover tune writ by Elizabeth Cotten. Shake Sugaree (P Bear Remix) Say Hello to Laura here .

Almost 6 months ago we planned and held a sort of blogger mix cd exchange. Chris over at PoL set it up, and it was a great success. We're soon to have another, so I thought I'd look back on the wonderfulness that was the first exchange, and share my contribution with all you great people. The cover is fantastic, I know. If you'd like a larger version for printing purposes, just click here . A zip file with all the tracks is included after the tracklist. 1. Benjamin Gibbard - [...]
Mmmmm.... Pretty There must be something in the ink at Advertising Age magazine. How else to explain such disparate agencies coming up with simultaneous campaigns which each use cool, sexy, hypnotic female vocals in the songs for their TV commercials? If you're like me, when you hear a cool song, and don't know who recorded it, you will drive yourself CRAZY trying to find out. The first ad wasn't too difficult. It was Feist , doing "1-2-3-43 in the Apple iPod commercial. [...]

It's that time again, when Seattleites get to discover the best of Portland's burgeoning music scene. On the last Friday of every month, KEXP sponsors PDXplore at the Sunset Tavern in lovely Ballard. This month we are showcasing A Weather and Laura Gibson . A Weather is one of Portland's up and coming new talents. They are signed to Conor Oberst's Team Love label and have opened for Bright Eyes to a crowd of 1200. Check out their MP3: [...]
Hi gang. Shifting gears, here's a remix of a Laura Gibson song released to the world just yesterday via the excellent Daytrotter (you can download this, and three other acoustic tracks there). Like Graves, her must-have debut album came out on Portland's HUSH label. Sweet Deception (Podbear Mix) Here she is playing with The Portland Cello Project via YouTube:
After a hazy, hot, humid and stormy week, the skies are set to clear up and the weekend forecast is gorgeous. Celebrate with a great Friday night out. Baltimore has it going on tonight. Start out early with the continuation of the free Friday concert series at Walter's Art Museum . Tonight they have one of their best shows yet. Local favorites Two if by Sea will be taking the stage and apparently there is a visual accompaniment. Two if by Sea - High [...]

NYC : For lunch, wander north into the perpetually shrinking Little Italy (which is surrounded by the perpetually growing Chinatown) for some real New York pizza. It's best to avoid Little Italy's restaurant-laden main drag, Mulberry Street—unless you like over-priced, unsatisfying Italian-American food. Instead, try Lombardi's (on Spring Street between Mulberry and Mott Streets). The pizzas are cooked in an ancient coal oven and are arguably the city's best. ( gayot ) Nola : Creole soul food is Praline's much-applauded specialty, and it's considered by many locals to be the best in the city. Originally [...]
Yesterday I rambled about Portland's very own Blizten Trapper, and today I am going to continue my love for all things Oregon with a few songs from the brand new PDX Pop Now compilation. The two disc set, which hit store shelves today, is the fourth in the annual series that is solely focused on the amazingly consistent scene in Portland. If you would like to hear some rare tracks from the likes of Menomena, Yacht, Colin Meloy, Panther, 31Knots, or some new material from a number of the artists that are currently flying under the radar in [...]

Ok. It's been a month or so since I've last written about The Shaky Hands and while I thought I was done with them (for now), they've pulled me back into their orb. PDX Pop Now , the great Portland based fest, has announced it's lineup and it's track listing for the 2 cd companion set for this year's fest (Aug. 3-5, free, all-ages). Man I already love this song! Soul (off an out-of-print EP) Bonus tracks Come By Storm - Laura [...]

MP3: Laura Gibson - Hands In Pockets MP3: Laura Gibson - Country, Country As we say goodbye to cold weather, I suggest taking a listen to Laura Gibson . Her debut "If You Come to Greet Me" came out on Hush earlier this year and is very winterish album. While it can survive in warm weather, it is complimented by the briskness of the air around you. Put it on at night, while it's still chilly in your room and fall asleep to [...]

Here's a little all-female, triple post to make up for my recent absence. Some great stuff: Electrelane are a four-piece from Brighton (England) that have been around since 1998 and are still going strong. Their sound is rough, but not abrasive, grunge, but still catchy, honest, but still idealistic. Though they definitely have a sound all their own, you can hear a little Sonic Youth or Velvet Underground influence if you listen close. The track I have for you guys, "Cut and Run", features some great ukulele-sounding strumming and a nice bit [...]

Tanyth Berkeley - Claire (2004) Haruki Murakami writes about the brief moment of intimately knowing a complete stranger completely. Knowing, sometimes immediately and without thought, that you both inherently share something worth acknowledging. Knowing that this moment is a meeting of two transcendental sparks in the dreary concrete corridors of human skin. Yet watching silently as the knowing is eclipsed [...]
Laura Gibson is from Portland, OR and plays a nylon-stringed guitar. On her latest (and first) full-length album If You Come To Greet Me she (at times) sounds eerily like Julie Doiron or a folkier and less jazzy Norah Jones or maybe even Feist. Whatever. Her music has an almost timeless or even old-timey quality about it. I'd describe her music and prairie folk. I can picture her sitting in a meadow surrounded by tall grasses and blue skies with her hair blowing in the wind somewhere in Oklahoma. Gibson's featherlight Americana on If You Come [...]

Yesterday, as I was listening to some Mp3s that I had downloaded over the last few weeks I came across an artist by the name of Laura Gibson. I pretty much instantly fell for Laura's earthy, folk sound and then, to much of my dismay, when I went to research her I came to find out that her album, If You Come To Greet Me, actually dropped way back in November of last year and Laura's tour, in support of that disc, ended yesterday. It's amazing how sometimes you can just completely miss the boat on stuff. [...]

been pretty busy the past few days, a trend that doesn't look to let up anytime soon. but at least i have some good music to tide me by. the past few days i've been listening to a singer by the name of laura gibson , who comes from the same adam selzer ( norfolk and western ) portland-based scene that nurtured and gave rise to the decemberists and m. ward . this is pretty, quiet, acoustic, folk music heard especially well on a cold, dark, grey day like today. the vocals are delicate, [...]
