After a balmy and beautiful weekend in Paris and a couple of warm days in Scotland I am finally persuaded that Spring might just be upon us at last. Our daffodils - out in January last year - are finally blooming, and I am not wearing a coat to work these days. Having the edge go from the air and that little bit more sunshine than usual tends to give a spring to people's step, and even this week's gig listings are playing along by being nice and benign: busy, but not crowded, with a few interesting little [...]

Bridge Carols is a new collaboration between Portland, Oregon folk singer, Laura Gibson , and soundscaper, Ethan Rose . Laura Gibson's 2009 release, Beast of Seasons, drew some very favourable reviews but this new venture takes her into less charted territory. Gibson's voice is used almost exclusively as an instrument as it interweaves with Rose's archaic, tinkling or quietly resonant arrangements. The result is a quite exquisite but ultimately ephemeral collection of lyric fragments, which float dreamily over dismembered ambient instrumentals. The album cover depicts the two protagonists waist high in grass, framed [...]
Tonight, Laura Gibson returns to San Francisco just after her performance at Noise Pop 2010 to promote a collaborative album with Portland recording artist Ethan Rose (Rickshaw 8pm, $10). Bridge Carols is a phenomenal piece of work, laying Gibson's delicate pick-and-whisper over Rose's warm electronic hums. It should find popularity amongst those interested in artists that crossover between folk and ambient, such as Volcano Choir or even Azure Ray. Two hearty folk/Americana local openers accompany Gibson on this bill: Emily Jane White [...]

Photos by: Charlie Homo We got a little lost on the way to the gig last night due, in part, to losing our bearings among the thousands of people gathered on Market Street to watch floats of Tiger Woods and light things on fire. The melee unfortunately caused us to miss the opener. Having missed Fences we decamped to the parquet for SF's Paula Frazer whose bewitching tunes rolled around the Great American as if tumbleweed in a spaghetti western starring Grace Slick. Her operatic falsetto is the cherry atop [...]
Bridge Carols, the new project from Portland, OR friends Laura Gibson and Ethan Rose, began as a conversation of mutual appreciation and curiosity - a shared desire to challenge old ways of working. We were fortunate enough to chat with Laura about this new and very unique album and project with her good friend Ethan. Check out the Q & A below! Q & A with Laura Gibson: Before we talk about your project with Ethan Rose we would just [...]
Noise Pop Death March begins! What with all the head-turning headliners, it can be easy to miss one of the major highlights of Noise Pop : loads of interesting openers. This is where you find the gems - these are no random acts thrown on by the label or venue, each show has like three opening bands that have all been given the once-over by someone who was paying attention. As I've said repeatedly and with relish, festivals are where you get the chance to see a ton of acts you've never heard or even [...]

But Pullman resident, ardent Inland-Northwest music supporter, and the man behind Stereopathic Music Larson Hicks is gunning to make it exactly that. Looking at the lineup he's confirmed for a weekend in [...]

As I reviewed my various playlists I had a pretty good idea what songs to put on a best songs playlist. What was really surprising is that Reinventing Robert Cohn by And Then There Were None was the top played song in our house... The list of 50 songs is below and are in no particular order. I can't embed the lala playlist in the post but you can get it here: 2009 Songs [...]
You can finally exhale: here are my top 20 albums of 2009. Apart from the two top spots, the order is rather random. Ask me in ten minutes' time, and Grizzly Bear or M. Ward might sit at number 3 and 4. I've put sample tracks of each album on a mix; the song titles appear at the end each abstract. . 1. Richard Hawley - Truelove's Gutter I didn't expect Hawley to top [...]
