As Done Waiting pointed out , Yorkshire-based singer-songwriter Laura Groves is on the SXSW 2010 bill along with a trillion others. In this video, Groves and friend play acoustic guitar and battery-operated keyboard in a mossy wood somewhere in England, I'm guessing. "I Am Leaving" really takes flight, thanks to Groves' powerful, very expressive voice, which seems to reach for the highest notes for emphasis––climactic purposes. Her self-titled debut album came out last July on XL, followed by a December EP, Does Anyone Love Me Now? Buy Blue Roses on [...]
Laura Groves is a young singer from the UK performing as Blue Roses . She recorded her self titled debut guerilla style -- using friends' homes, bathrooms and even a prized Steinway in a local shop. Today's Top Tune has a haunting melody, it's a live version of " Doubtful Comforts ."

Shipley chantoozy Blue Roses (aka Laura Groves, born not more than 20 miles from where I was, as it happens) writes delightful songs. You know the feeling you get when you're a little kid, and someone gives you a kaleidoscope - you've never seen one before, you point it at a window, put your eye to it and start turning? Ooh.. That's how I feel when I listen to Blue Roses. Head on over to her MySpace page . You'll hear echoes of Bjork, Liz Fraser, Kate Bush.. but mostly you'll hear Laura [...]
Listening to tracks from her July 21 debut album there's simply no getting around the rather obvious fact that British singer/songwriter Laura Groves -- AKA Blue Roses -- has spent a lot of time listening to the music of Kate Bush with a healthy dose of Joni Mitchell and Cocteau Twins thrown in for good measure. Expansive, wispy and lighter than air, Groves captures that fleeting, delicate Bush vocal style with finessed aplomb and, despite the noted similarities, also succeeds in delivering her own special musical vision. Influences [...]
In theory, this is a great idea. Get a bunch of known alternative bands to do a cover version for CD1, then get them (and some record labels) to recommend a bunch of 'new' bands, and fill CD2 with songs by said recommendations. In theory. In the wider context, Independents Day 08 was a worldwide event raising money for the independent music community, as well as some charities, which included the largest ever auction of independent ...
Song, by Toad is the future of music. So are Fence Records. So is Welcome to Our TV Show. This is neither as serious nor, actually, as facetious a statement as it seems. Song, by Toad? The future of music? Ah hah hah haaa, what vainglorious hubris! Well actually I'm not being [...]

Mr Jeremy Warmsley (and the mysterious Fay Buzzard) has created a web-tv show featuring live performances by a lot of cutting-edge British indie-pop-stars. You can watch the show on youtube , but if here's mp3-flavoured-taster before diving into the main course: some deliciously lo-fi mp3s I've been sent to share with you. LAURA GROVES ( myspace ) MP3: I wish I (live) Rather serene but suitably frayed folk music from the quick-sung Laura Groves, likely borned from the same stock as Ms Joanna Newsom, minus [...]
So, the second edition of Jeremy Warmsley and Fay Buzzard's Welcome to Our TV Show is up online now, and like the first, it's very good. It's a sort of lo-fi Jools Holland, where the hosts are less slick, but also far less cringeworthy. If you missed the first, the premise is basically a load of bands and mates piling into Jeremy and Fay's living room and getting filmed playing unreleased songs. This time round it's the turn of Emmy the Great, Lightspeed Champion and Laura Groves, as well as [...]

Here's something very nice that came my way the other day. The new single from lovely northern chanteuse Laura Groves . She's recently been signed to XL imprint Salvia Records, and it's the debut release for both the label and Laura. Of course, I've been on about her a few times before, and even posted the a-side track I am Leaving , but I was also pleased to hear the b-side - a slightly extended version of Bridges , which first appeared on the 50 minutes compilation of one-minute songs last autumn. It's all lovely [...]

MP3: Laura Groves - Can't Sleep (live) A folkstress singing of big wide open emotions and about the sun falling out of the sky - she introduces you to her world with initial hypnotising harmonising but you gradually begin to understand her spell. And just as the diminutive Moroccon story-tellers can tell you hundreds of stories from their unassuming position cross legged in the corner of the market, Laura's voice doesn't so much surprise me as it much as it just requires appreciation and assumes your attention is there as [...]

Last Thursay night in East London was a bit chaotic. Liverpool Street Station and the street outside was closed off and the traffic was backing right up Shoreditch High Street. The absence of buses going to Hackney meant that the streets were full of disgruntled communters trudging north. I was in that crowd, but I had more of a spring in my step as I headed to Hoxton Square to see Emmy the Great . I knew it was going to be a good show. In addition to Noah and the Whale, an email from Emmy a few days [...]

I've just realised that all the bands and artists in my long list of tips for 2006 are British (or at least British-based). But maybe that's not a surprise. After all, that's where I'm from, and I can leave the North American-based tips to my blogging brethren across the Atlantic. Looking forward to hearing theirs. In the meantime I'll press ahead with my next instalment – today, singer-songwriters. All young, solo people with good songs and a lot to offer in 2007. Adele [...]

The other week I was in Rough Trade buying some music when I stumbled across a small pile of CDs which looked like they might be free. Sure enough they were, and never one to resist an interesting-looking freebie I happily snapped it up. It intrigued me because it was a folk CD - Folking it Up - compiled by DJs du jour Queens of Noize , denizens of the London indie clubs, and now with their own weekly show on BBC 6Music . I hadn't really thought of them as [...]
