I must confess that I find it hard to mourn the death of Amy Winehouse. Don't think of me as a man possessed of a callous heart. Of course the death of a young, talented woman is a cause for sadness. But Ms Winehouse did not die in a tragic accident, as Otis Redding did, nor did a dread disease claim her, as it did Minnie Riperton. Amy Winehouse was a victim of her own excess; she lived a self-destructive lifestyle which first wounded her talent and then (as it appears) ended her life. My empathy is directed at her [...]

Today's feature comes from an album called The Next Right Thing , wich could also be a comment about the artist you are listening. Seth Glier is a 21 year-old songwriter and musician from Massachusetts, who's quickly established himself on the national scene, performing over 200 shows a year. His sophomore album for MPress, The Next Right Thing , draws direct inspiration from Seth's frequent visits to such unlikely venues as elementary schools, nursing homes and hospitals, where he performs his unique brand of story-telling pop. (press-release) [...]

This year I won't be doing a Halloween mix. For those who m issed last year's mixes, take a look at Any Major Halloween Vol. 1 (creepy stuff) and Any Major Halloween Vol. 2 (less creepy stuff) . Meanwhile, fortify yourself wth some soul music. Of all the mixes that I compile for this blog, I think doing the soul covers is my favourite. For one thing, as I go through my collection of music, I get to listen to some gorgeous soul albums I [...]

Sometimes the stories of the artists who didn't quite make it are far more interesting than the ones that did. A case in point would be 60's & 70's soul singer Laura Lee . Hailing from Detroit, Lee sang gospel with Aretha Franklin's sister Erma; recorded for Chess Records; was pursued for signing by Frank Sinatra; recorded for Hot Wax, Holland-Dozier-Holland's post-Motown label; was Al Green's girlfriend before he broke and was the inspiration for songs like "Tired Of Being Alone." You can hear a fascinating five-part history of her life at Laura's website [...]

"And I'm tired of you and your woman and your dog too!" Laura Lee has just plain had enough in another great soul scorcher from the mighty Chess label. Her dirty man forgot just one thing while he was doing her wrong all of these years: that she´s a good housekeeper... So Laura simply takes up her broom and sweeps all of the dirt out on the street. Yes sir! Laura Lee - Dirty Man MP3
I'm hoping that maybe one of the amusing (or warped) amongst you will come up with a clever caption for this pic. One of my homies has already dubbed it "Obama Wit A Gangsta Lean". Lord...you gotta love the intellectually impaired... Anyway, I could have just blown some smoke up your collective ass as to why my next post isn't finished yet, but that would have been a total drag...don't ya think?

Donny Hathaway: What a Woman Really Means From Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Brothers (Atlantic, 2006) Laura Lee: What a Man From Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Sisters (Atlantic, 2006) These two volumes collect rare and unreleased songs from the Atlantic vaults - a plum job if there was one. There's such a wealth of material in searching through the catalog of arguably the biggest soul label in history . However, I'll be candid: I wasn't a huge fan of [...]
