By Mitchell Stirling May 24, 2013. With Laura Marling, there’s something in the water, it flows through her fourth album Once I Was An Eagle as it has done her previous work. The bodies of water keep getting wider; on her debut she couldn’t cross a river for a boy because “alas, I cannot swim” Here, she’s travelling over oceans. The album itself is broken into three acts, the first clearly marked by four unbroken songs. Opener ‘Take The Night Off’ is a mellow [...]

Sometimes it feels like music is more interested in bells and whistles than it is the humble appeal of a melody. If you’re not whirling silken ribbons whilst simultaneously reverse coding the tandura through the innards of a vintage synthesiser found in the Oxfam near Gary Numan’s old house, you’re quite frankly not trying hard enough. And if, lord forbid, you’re happy with a humble guitar - that produces a thousand facets of different enchanting shades, a softly husky vocal that bites and magnifies to Goliath, before metamorphosing to the shaking David in one pause - prepare to be reduced [...]
LAURA Marling is a darling. Everyone loves her - she's the acceptable face of the Mumford & Sons alt-folk juggernaut, she's been nominated for the Mercury Prize twice, won a Brit for Best Female Solo Artist, , won Best Solo Artist at the NME Awards, singer songwriter Beans On Toast even wrote a song about how much he loved her. Luckily, it gives me great pleasure to say the latest LP from Ms Marling, Once I Was An Eagle, is high up there with her best material. And it gives me great pleasure to listen to, too [...]

The song that, for all intents and purposes, proved to be Laura Marling 's breakthrough provides an interesting instrument with which to gauge her relentless progression over the course of her short career to date. 'New Romantic' is wonderfully written; honest, witty, somehow both charming and heartbreaking, and yet it seems, by way of comparison to what's come since, almost juvenile. The failed-relationship basics of the lyrics stand out; Marling doesn't write songs with turns of phrase like 'pretty fit' any more. Some of the vocal nuances [...]

Out of all the songs that Laura Marling could have covered from Bruce Springsteen's vast catalog, we would have likely figured it would have been something from either of his stark acoustic records - the brilliant Nebraska or its 1995 follow-up of sorts The Ghost of Tom Joad . Instead the folkie-chanteuse , who will release her fourth studio album Once I Was An Eagle next Tuesday, threw us for a bit of a curve ball, teaming up with Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Eddie Berman [...]

Tom Hines So Chicago was great, thanks for asking. Terrible weather forecasts came not to pass, though storms yesterday did wreak a little havoc on getting out of town. But that's neither here nor there, and I am now here, not there. And here is a very short post to confirm that I am, indeed, still alive. It's not entirely clear to me what the mandate of the Soundclash festival coming to Harbourfront Centre in July is, but at least part of it is to bring Brooklyn electro-pop duo Chairlift to town [...]

The release of a new Laura Marling album is always noteworthy, and not least because she's become one of the best songwriters that England can claim as its own, even if she's since relocated to Los Angeles. Her music has been moving down an increasingly darker path since debut Alas, I Cannot Swim was released five years ago, and as her career has flourished, so has her ambition. Her new album opens with a 16-minute medley split into four songs, and by the end of 'Breathe', it becomes apparent that she's no longer writing for a [...]

Its been a good while since we've put up one of these type of posts, but a plethora of top notch releases meant it demanded to be temporarily resurrected! So without further ado we have another taste of Laura Marling's much anticipated new album in the shape of Once , and another taste from the rather weirder folk songstress Amanda Jo Williams and Holster, The Gun It Hangs In There, which is taken from her new album You're The Father Of My Songs .
