Psychologists may have not found strong evidence for effects on human behavior around the time of a full moon, but I definitely felt a dash of magical phenomena during Saturday's super moon. I'm not talking about delusional thoughts of turning into a werewolf, but perhaps there was some kind of wild animal in me nonetheless. Maybe it was the Indian food and Heineken? Or maybe it's the combination of perfection and my loud mouth wanting to open up a Excel sheet and put this formula down on paper. The absolute value of a number is never negative. Isn't that what [...]

"Hello, gorgeous." With that greeting, the first words uttered by 26-year-old Barbra Streisand in her film debut in the 1968 musical Funny Girl , the ingénue from Brooklyn, New York, with the crooked, over-sized nose and the flawless singing voice entered the annals of popular culture. Next step: winning the Best Actress Oscar (tying with The Lion in Winter 's Katharine Hepburn) for her silver-screen reprisal of her Broadway portrayal of Fanny Brice, another legendary Jewish actress and singer from New York City. The rest is history-making stardom, one of the most [...]

Al Kooper left Blood, Sweat & Tears and four million albums sold later, they were stars.

This week, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) announced its list of inductees for 2012. To be eligible, performers must have recorded their first album 25 years ago, and exhibit criteria that demonstrate "influence and significance of the artists' contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll." There are categories for sidemen, non-performers, and early influences, but the category of prestige is performer and that's where this rambling is focused. The 2012 performer inductees include Guns 'n Roses , The Beastie Boys , Red Hot [...]

Check out this year's inductees into Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In addition to a veteran acts like "Mellow Yellow" crooner Donovan, the late (and quite prolific) singer-songwriter Laura Nyro and '60s "Itchykoo Park" hit-makers Small Faces, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame will be inducting a trio of pioneering '80s acts in 2012: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys and Guns N' Roses. The past year was a big one for the Chili Peppers. In addition celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal, breakthrough alt rock album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (which contained Grammy-winning "Give It Away" and [...]

Fans of Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The three bands will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 14th, 2012 at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH. Other inductees will include Donovan, singer/songwriter Laura Nyro and The Faces whose lineup once boasted artists like Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. The Cure, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Eric B. & Rakim missed the honor this year. So now the big question will be [...]
This morning, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame announced its nominees for 2012 induction. This year, we've got some intriguing new names on the list, including Guns N' Roses, the Cure, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric B. & Rakim, and Joan Jett And The Blackhearts. It also includes a few artists who have previously been nominated, including the Beastie Boys and Donna Summer. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after releasing a single or album, and only eight of the 15 nominees will actually make it into the Hall. And as silly as this whole [...]
The Heavy gets delightfully creept on Blood Sweat and Tears' 'And When I Die.'

American singer and songwriter Laura Nyro has one of those voices that once you hear it, you'll never forget. Born from Russian Jewish and Italian heritage, her style crafted in the late 60s blended the Brill Building sounds with more complex arrangements all carried by her singular vocal styling which is still as clairvoyant today as it was over 40 years ago. Nyro's career began early. She sold her first song to Peter, Paul, & Mary and began performing [...]

Let's state the obvious first: Rebecca Black's Friday does not represent an acme moment in the annals of popular music. I am even inclined to agree with those who suggest the song is quite awful, especially in its excess of autotuning. It sounds like the theme song for a particularly hyperactive Japanese game show. My remaining days will not be diminished by the absence of Friday on my iPod. But those people with whom I'm inclined to agree are not the target audience, many of whom dislike the song as well. Black's target audience has a crush on [...]

Bob Lefsetz wrote a beautiful piece on Laura, and on this song. Quote: "Laura Nyro's forty year old lyrics are as relevant today as they were back then. The war is different, but the pain remains. And politics is more disheartening than ever, and the gap between the rich and the poor is a taboo that "artists" don't write about, desirous of getting on the gravy train to riches themselves." So I'd thought I'd post it here. Laura Nyro - Christmas in my soul

by Ariella Stok My identification and admiration for Laura Nyro, the hugely influential singer songwriter, began almost instantly upon learning about her. But to actually enjoy her music, and to find a place for it in my heart, I had to work for it. My first breakthrough in coming to appreciate (and now love) Laura Nyro's music came after reading her response to a question about her influences in a 1970 Down Beat interview: When I was 15 years old, I used to drink bottles of cough medicine and … lie down with my [...]

Laura Nyro : La-La (Means I Love You) [ purchase ] This nonsense song title includes its own handy parenthetical interpretation for those of us who aren't quite sure what "la-la" actually means. Now we know. There's not a cover of this song that I don't love, which lets me know right away that I need to be checking out the writer – Thom Bell. Just as the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland defined the Motown sound in the 60's, the same is true for Thom Bell and [...]

Since 1986, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has been inducting those who have made an impression on the evermore detailed map of pop and rock music. And yeah, the ceremony it might be a little chintzy, and some may consider the whole think a giant joke, and the whole argument of contemporary relevance is all but hurled out the the window, and the fact that ABBA is in there and Brian Eno isn't is enough to set yourself on fire - but it beats the living hell out of any other televised American music awards show, and usually the ceremony ekes some gnarly [...]

Laura Nyro: Wedding Bell Blues [ purchase ] Ah... dear, sweet Laura Nyro... penner of many tunes made more famous by others: this one, The Fifth Dimension... Stoney End, Barbra Streisand... And When I Die, Blood, Sweat & Tears... Three Dog Night, Eli's Coming - she sadly left us too early in 1997 at the age of 49 due to ovarian cancer... But mostly, when I listen to this entire album, I think of Elias Livaditas and the Summer of '73 between my freshman and sophomore [...]
