If you're a regular hill reader, you likely already know that we think The Company House is one of Halifax's finest venues, and as such, it's the perfect place to hear Jason Ogden (under the Penny Blacks moniker) perform songs from his new album Harbour . Luckily this is exactly what will happen tonight, as Jason will perform at the CoHo along with Halifax's Laura Peek and fellow NB'er Adam Mowery. Those familiar with the Saint John music scene have likely heard Ogden's name before, as he's a veteran of many [...]

May 31, 2011 marks the end of another Polaris Music Prize voting year. I'm finalizing my ballot for this year's long list, and decided that instead of a boring sequence of posts about what I'm considering, I'd use the opportunity for another episode of RADiO QBiM to give you a taste of what I'm thinking. (cover star: Katie Stelmanis of Austra ) tracklisting: 01 Austra "Beat And The Pulse" 02 Destroyer "Chinatown" [...]

(photo: Matt Dunlap) I keep hearing a lot of flute in my music these days. I've had an odd relationship with the flute all my life. One of my earliest flute memories is a commercial for a Time/Life music compilation that featured the flute player from Jethro Tull doing an odd little dance move. It amounts to about five seconds, but those five seconds are seared into my brain forever. I used to try and recreate the dance, but it's hard to do a dance that's only five seconds long without any knowledge of what moves [...]

I'll admit, these Party Tunes Tuesday posts lately aren't really "party" music. At least not like the kind of party you were at on New Year's Eve. This week, we have Laura Peek, who's sophomore album drops next month. The tasty single to pique your interest is below. Can't help but think about some old soulful rock tunes when that alto flute comes in. Laura and her band (The Winning Hearts) are from Canada. Listen: Laura Peek ∞ Stay Sharp

From the inbox: Laura Peek's new album Key is available on February the 8th . Peek has built up a following at CDKU college radio in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She and her band The Winning Hearts reached number 1 on their charts with sunny yet soulful songs like this.: Laura Peek: Stay Sharp.mp3

Key is really well thought out and beautifully crafted and to prove it here is a sneak peak of it with the song "Stay Sharp". Laura Peek Stay Sharp [...]

Image: Jennifer Akkermans And here I attempt to string together some of the songs I listened to and loved this past week with some childhood memories of music. Watch me ramble! Witness as I fail to self-edit! Read if you must/dare. The first song I remember seeing performed was a murder ballad, executed by my dad. He sat on the cinnamon tweed sofa in our family room and played "Tom Dooley" -- a [...]
