I've dedicated this week to covering albums that I've been meaning to talk about for a while but haven't quite had the energy or motivation to try and give the coverage they deserve. First on the list is Saltbreakers the new record from Laura Veirs . I fell in love with her previous records about this time last year and have been waiting anxiously for another since then. And unlike some other bands who have let me down, she does not disappoint. Saltbreakers delves far more into the realm [...]
I heard an outstanding track on KEXP the other day and was immediately entranced; the track was "Don't Lose Yourself" by Laura Veirs, from her 2007 release Saltbreakers. It's an interesting album; I don't do singer-songwriter stuff much these days,...

Direction l'Ubu [...]

The subject of some discussion between Beth and I, this rather lovely song makes me stop whatever I'm doing and reflect for a moment on it's rolling harmonies and essentially uplifting vibe. Listen: Laura Veirs - To the Country Buy it
"Tom is talking too quietly to be heard over barking boxer puppies." -- Sarah in the FOT Chat on the inaudibility of Tom's "sick voice" over the din of the canines in her care "I wonder how it is you have an ear for fake voices." -- Tom on Petey's expert detective work "Give me back my sandwich!" -- Harrison Ford, chasing down his elusive lunch for two hours in the forthcoming Raiders of the Lost Hoagie "Sounds like someone needs some Tums!" -- Philly Boy Roy, proposing [...]

The latest album from newly Portland-based singer/songwriter Laura Veirs is called Saltbreakers and it is great. I must disagree with the fairly negative Pitchfork review which states that Saltbreakers is full of "songs that aim low and leave no impression on landing" and "sewage." Rubbish, I tell you. The album (like 2005's Carbon Glacier was) is full of literate folk-pop that is backed by diverse and grandiose instrumentation and (occasionally) an airy electronic haze. Oftentimes quite similar to Liz Phair's in that they both have a limited vocal range, Veirs' [...]
Lots of great releases this week as a lot of these are some of my favorites of the year so far. A few that I can definitely recommend starts with The Rosebud's third album Night of The Furies , which is simply a great pop record from top to bottom. In fact, I was actually interviewed today on Blog Fresh Radio and this was the album I talked about for a couple of minutes. I'll let you know when that [...]

Here's a little all-female, triple post to make up for my recent absence. Some great stuff: Electrelane are a four-piece from Brighton (England) that have been around since 1998 and are still going strong. Their sound is rough, but not abrasive, grunge, but still catchy, honest, but still idealistic. Though they definitely have a sound all their own, you can hear a little Sonic Youth or Velvet Underground influence if you listen close. The track I have for you guys, "Cut and Run", features some great ukulele-sounding strumming and a nice bit [...]

It's another great week for new music, with new releases from Bright Eyes ( see previous post ,) Blonde Redhead , Laura Veirs , The Rosebuds and the exciting new group from Nick Cave and his Bad Seed bretheren called Grinderman . Playlist: New Releases 04.10.07 ------------------------------ ---------------- Album: Grinderman - Grinderman "Foul-mouthed, noisy, hairy, and damn well old enough to [...]

Today I laid my ears cloase on Seattle girl Laura Veirs. She sure has something I want to discover more of. Her third Nonesuch album Saltbreakers is out today and it struck me that I don't really know her. As with all these nerdy-looking girls she is of course a singer-songwriter. She sings personal stuff, intense and she is both indie, alt-rock, country and has a nice vocal on tight and grungy drum-loops as well. There's enough stuff around to celebrate her, so check her out on Allmusic , on her MySpace for the [...]
Finally back in Hanover after a very long, stressful, occasionally exhilarating couple of weeks in Oklahoma and Texas. This was the end of the season for debate, with the two national tournaments. Dartmouth made it to the final round of the CEDA National tournament and to the octofinals of the National Debate Tournament, and was also ranked as the #4 team in the country going into the NDT. One of the people on the team who won that tournament was actually my friend Aimi, who has a very nice music blog of her own: the monsters [...]

"I was protecting myself." Laura Veirs ~ Pink Light from Saltbreakers by Laura Veirs
This track unfolds like a flower, opening with the stutter of a drum machine and the right-channel strum of an acoustic guitar. Ms. Veirs' echoey vocals leap forward with an account of ridiculous attraction as a live drum comes in with a thick and rolling ornamental beat. Finally we're treated to a charged bit of piano, mixed right up next to the vocals and carrying the song through the lull between verse and chorus. Then the song unfolds completely, with everything laid out in a brief rise of noise, glowing, shifting keyboards weaving through the rest of [...]

Live blogging has been all the rage in the blogosphere, so I've decided that I'm going to live blog the new album Saltbreakers by Laura Veirs (out in Europe already, due out April 10th in US). [Queuing up the compact disc] " Pink Light " (Track 1): She's got an interesting voice, can't quite put my finger on it. The beat is kicking in now, and with some pretty awesome rhythms. I can't resist the subtle clapping, and the guitar riff paints this under-the-stars image. [...]

As Chicago dips back into a rainy and cold atmosphere, I inexplicably find myself with a little more time on my hands and an urge to do some more blogging. This entry here should catch us up to what would otherwise be the normal number of entries for this week. And who better to get back on track with, than Ms. Laura Veirs? April 10th is her big day signaling the release of her sixth (!) album, "Saltbreakers." I only really caught on to her music with the release of 2005's "Year of Meteors," so in many ways I'm still [...]

New Laura Veirs is very welcome; Carbon Glacier and Year of Meteors are regulars on my rotation, and given her unusual voice and sense of phrase, I'm always curious to hear what she'll be doing next. Saltbreakers comes out 10 April in North America; "Pink Light" is streamable on her Myspace , and Don't Lose Yourself (Saltbreaker) is floating around on several blogs. The sound is more polished, but still features her unique phrasing and tempo. It does raise the question, though: once [...]

...and most of my CDs are 2 hours away, so you get a half-assed post by me. --- I heart Laura Veirs, and her new album, Saltbreakers , may be really awesome. Here are two songs. Laura Veirs - "Don't Lose Yourself" (best song EVAR) Laura Veirs - "Cast a Hook" [...]
