Tweet This lot curate a festival. Truth. Is this any reflection on their musical ability? Well, obviously no. It has no bearing whatsoever on the likelihood that these pleasant looking chaps can string together a few melodies and nice twiddly guitar moments (though they can). Sadly I know little else other than this: They curate In The Woods festival. Right then. The little else I do know is that they're heading out onto a brief UK tour soon and they're quite good. [...]

You know what it's like when you hear a cracking track, but for some reason, you just can't find it anywhere? ANYWHERE. Apart from, say, some weird, un-edited video which has been shot on a balcony with some weird American dude talking too much on YouTube . Which, you know, is fine, but you have to dedicate time to sit and listen rather than have it on the go on your listening device, with piss poor sound quality. You can't add it to your 'Music to bum-off' playlist'. No, sir, you cannot. This is my beef with the Laurel Collective . In this [...]
![[405 Premiere] Laurel Collective - 'They Hate Me'](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4042728_lg.jpg)
If you combine the fact that these guys used to run a festival (In The Woods) with their sporadic music releases over the past few years, the only logical conclusion is that Laurel Collective aren't your typical indie band. However, with their forthcoming debut album Heartbeat Underground on the horizon, as well as their new single 'They Hate Me' coming March 19th, it seems the band are finally on the path they needed to be on. 'They Hate me' is a great example of indie music with a great pop sensibility - [...]

Each year in a unique forest location, somewhere in Kent, Laurel Collective curate a small festival, unlike any other- In the Woods . Curated, organised and built by the band with a small team of dedicated helpers, including celebrated event producer Lisa Farrell, the festival is fast becoming known as a benchmark show for breaking acts, having seen Anna Calvi , Micachu and The Shapes , Connan Mockasin and The Invisible all play storming sets on the cusp of career success. Indeed, Micachu returns this year to play a headline set, off the back of their project with [...]

Friday Films is a weekly post with videos of new songs by London acts I like… Cymbals - Summer Escaping Have you ever watched a dog try to chase its own tail? The freaked-out , fucked-up bass cuts on this super new record from Cymbals kind of remind me of that. It's a game the dog can never win, but still he plays, endlessly. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] Fujiya [...]
Screw genres. That seems to be the mindset of The Laurel Collective , a London sixpiece who veer from blues to soul to electronica to rock with all the consistently of a drunken high-heeled preteen waltzing around Leicester Square. A bohemian spirit and experimental enthusiasm are probably to blame - or rather, to thank. The only constant is a general good-time-ness - visible amid the down-tempo keyboard murkiness and guttural vocals of Cruel Thing, the screechy hooks of Jelly Bird and definitely the chantable rock-funk of Vuitton Blues. Somehow, you just know that they'd be a scream live - especially at their monthly residency [...]
Laurel Collective - Fax of Death They're out of the UK. A good song to get you moving on a Monday.
Filed under: Concerts and Tours Since they formed in 2005, London-based the Laurel Collective have whittled themselves down from 19 members to a more manageable five-piece that mix surreal word play with pop hooks and a DIY sensibility. In 2008, they dropped well-received mini-album 'Feelgood Hits Of A Nuclear Winter' via Domino Records offshoot Double Six. Now the band head to Texas with a full-length debut ready to roll. Co-vocalist Bob Tollast explained more to Spinner. Describe the Laurel Collective's sound in your own words. [...]

If you've been trolling the musicnerdisphere over the past few weeks you've probably become quite aware that SXSW and its promise of beer and BBQ'd jams is incoming. That said, we're very proud to announce that in addition to our usual curatorial/celebratory duties elsewhere in Austin, we're also sponsoring The Garden Party this year, as presented by our friends at Press Here Publicity and Domino Publishing Co. It's all happening on Saturday, March 20 at the French Legation Museum from 12 noon to 8 pm. As [...]

Every year, we listen to mp3's of every band scheduled to appear at SXSW. We then present you with an A to Z preview of the bands that we think should earn your attention. Whether you're coming down to SXSW (recommended!) or just looking for new music, there's no better time of year. There's a variety of music here, so buckle up for some different sounds. We'll be previewing two letters per day, which'll take us right up to SXSW Music Week. Then we'll give you our picks for the "Ten bands you must see at SXSW!". This is part [...]

Mrs. Toad and I might be gallivanting about the Italian countryside, but we are still thinking of you, our loyal Toadlings. We may be relaxing by the pool, but we understand that life might not be quite so easy for those of you at home. Actually, fuck it, life is never this easy for us either. This is like some bizarre anomaly for us - time, peace, reading books… it's all so fucking restful I've almost forgotten to swear at the locals. The place we're staying is just plain ridiculous. We are [...]
over a year after their debut mini album hit shelves, i have been introduced to The Laurel Collective . apparently they used to be a nineteen-piece band but have thrown some members aboard, leaving just (just!) six to conquer the world. they make impossibly catchy, eclectic guitar pop songs that are seasoned with a whole host of fabulous sounds for your ears to feast on. they've just finished touring with pals Micachu & The Shapes and are currently working hard on their first full length LP which i cannot wait for. The Laurel [...]

Oh dear god almighty I have a hangover. Fucking bastard music people. Last night there was gigging and drinking and wandering the streets of a most balmy and pleasant Edinburgh with an assortment of miscreants and other ne'er-do-wells. We saw Honeytrap and Meursault play at Sneaky Pete's - I was recording this podcast, hence late for X-Lion Tamer, sorry to both Ed and Tony - and it was fucking amazing. And after that there was drinking. Fuck me there was lots of drinking. And then I came home and went into the local all night shop and purchased [...]

Ah this brings back memories of a good night at 93 Feet East when these guys played a great set. Considering there are 7 band members including two singers the energy is perfect. They don't edge toward any particular genre either: instead they easily cherry pick small aspects of many popular genres and the result is all lovely and warm! They've been doing the rounds in the UK for the past couple of years now - it's difficult to say whether they'll make it to the mainstream and it may not even be what they're looking [...]

Another playlist this week. I've been studying hard (and had my confidence completely shattered today) for advanced biochemistry(!) and molecular biology so I haven't had the chance to review any new music and I've been wasting a ton of time (or "study breaks") laughing my butt off to some older clips of Summer Heights High. Summer Heights High debuts on HBO (US) and The Movie Channel in Canada around November 9th, though it's 7 episodes were recommended by a fellow Spikedhumor user showing me a few episodes and making me laugh hysterically. Chris [...]
Returning to London after a year long hiatus, I resolved to throw myself back into the thick of things, you know what that means kids, a gig double header. And not just any gig double header - A Double Six Records Double Header (That's A Double Six Records, A Sub Division of the Domino Recording Co Double Header). Brief is how I shall try and keep this as I am growing averse to live reviews - they are all beset by the same problems and reporting them never changes. I can only hope to use whatever problems arise [...]
